It's amazing that through all the ugliness and horror of war these two endure that a trace of innocent love is found struggling to live within their hearts.
Love is one of the hidden tragedies of war we never expect to see.
    Heartbreaking.

The book was written in 1941. The author didn't know the east Russia front was so terrible. It just said that Werner asked to go to battlefields, didn't say that he would go to the east front. The movie changed it and made that it's almost impossible that Werner could survive.

Good point. I never read the book. It must have been a Director or Producer that was jealous of true loves, and just had to put an end like that. Disgusting. It was also IMPOSSIBLE that the girl, after all she had heard from him, like the plea as to what should he do, and all the interest & attraction she had for this good man, that she would not say her feelings immediately then, if not before then? Nah, I think she would have hunted him down when she saw the murder plotted. Any decent person would have done that UNLESS she was afraid the French underground would have gone after her. I don't know. It seems there was a way she could have saved their lives.

@@bookwormdoe1522 Lol I don't think the producer or director purposely put a tragic ending to destroy their romance. In fact, this movie has a theme that is beyond romance -- Anti-War and Peace. If it wasn't because of war, this duo would have continued their romance with no boundaries or obstacles. The ending is portrayed like this to remind all of us that ---- war should never happen.

Even though he decides to carry out his obligations, the murder of his two friends and the fact Jeanne can not love him under the war condition, he suffers from survivor's guilt and lost his will to live, he chose to die a soldier's death on the Russian Front.

This kind of relationship probably did happen during that period, no doubt, a handsome officer, a good man, reluctant about war, just doing his duty, and a beautiful French girl, yes, I think there is no doubt about it. However, the idea they wouldn't have spoken for SO LONG is ridiculous. Young, sexual tension wouldn't have allowed that. No way! Although they would have been careful not to be seen in public, they no doubt would have tried to unite at the end of the war.

@balidancer Two souls recognize each other leads to merging in the vibration of love-----very high frequency, people in love are high initially, that's because their soul meshing give them access to the love frequency---heaven or higher dimension. Falling in love ----ever hear of that? Love between a man and a woman is a very narrow understanding of LOVE the energy/vibration/frequency. Somehow when we are incarnated in the physical body(3D) we have a very hard time to gain access to this high vibration zone. There are other ways to access it, meditation, sports, fasting, dancing (whirling dervishes), singing, listening to music...But Falling in Love is something most people have a chance to experience. Meditation is much harder for average 3D humans. lol. But we are about to have the Great Awakening, which is the collective ascension of humanity, basically when we transcends 3D, we become enhanced with telepathy, clairvoyance, health, mental acuity, etc. We can manifest instantly. Watch the "Soul Tribe" short film by Charles Eisenstein.

Your comment is just water under the bridge.
Jean Bruller is not a great writer, this film is much better than the short story. Besides, the Resistance had many dark, dubious sides, the historiography is controversial with many court trials between French people after the war.
As regards Werner, he is the main attraction of the movie, it would have not been a success without him. She has the longest role, while he has the most important one. She has the dialogues, he has the monologues. Not only his eyes are gorgeous but also his subtle, bright smile. The mimic muscles are connected with some nervous centers on the brain, so that you can see his nobility on his face.
Hugo Boss created the most elegant military uniforms ever; like it or not, that's the truth.

@@marinellabakken7491 Well said. Werner has a very tough role in the movie, but he in a way has a heavier load to bare. He bore it like a real soldier and a gentleman. He had a well spring of gentle respect and good will to talk his way into the heart of Jeanne, the good looks definitely help. Though Jeanne's determination not to talk to him in in a private space like Christmas eve when no one is around, is a bit perplexing, considering she was so lovelorn.

@@marinellabakken7491 I would love to hear more about the post war trials between French people. Is the Vichy government still hated in France? Do people understand that after the Germans occupied France, the 24 million French people in the occupied area needs some kind of government to administer to their daily needs, to enforce order, law, ensure safety? Anyone taking up the Prime Minister's role must know he was sacrificing himself for a thankless job because it would ruin his reputation...so they selected Philippe Petain. Sure enough for taking up that job, his reputation was forever sealed, it was so politicized. I wonder if today, the French understand that he made a sacrifice.

Linduss sss, may I politely suggest 'Letter from an unknown Woman', by Max Ophuls, or perhaps 'Lady with a small Dog', by Iosif Heifitz. Both dealing in love and loss and what might have been. Oh yes, and 'Fair stood the Wind for France', by H. E. Bates. Made into a TV film in the 80's, I think.

That was such a horrible ending. Why couldn't the movie writer have written a hopeful ending. There was NO REASON he should leave for the devastating Russian front, when he knew she saved his life. Yet, she couldn't say "stay, please stay", instead says "adieu". It left all of us wanting more. An embrace, a kiss, a goodbye to the driver---

He has to leave because it seems that he got an order from headquarters that the troops there need to tighten policy there or the SS army is gonna do something there and he is not able to stop them. Remember his friends talked to him about something? They need to implement some plans there, being in love with France, he is not able to do bad things as told in France so he requested move to Russian front. And he is not able to save the girl's neighbours as Jeanne wants. So leaving is the best solution. If Jeanne survives the war, it would be a good memory for her. And also if the Captain dies, for sure he dies with this good memory.
