    With regards to unit scale, the size that you use scales automatically. The four unit sizes are small (30 peasants per unit), normal (60 peasants per unit), large (120 peasants per unit), and huge (240 peasants per unit). No matter which unit size you are using, one unit of peasants per 1000 population will provide the maximum public order. So for instance:
    If the city has 1,000 population:
    -Small: 30 soldiers (1 peasant unit) will give 80% garrison public order boost
    -Normal: 60 soldiers (1 peasant unit) will give 80% garrison public order boost
    -Large: 120 soldiers (1 peasant unit) will give 80% garrison public order boost
    -Huge: 240 soldiers (1 peasant unit) will give 80% garrison public order boost
    If the city has 12,000 population:
    -Small: 360 soldiers (12 peasant units) will give 80% garrison public order boost
    -Normal: 720 soldiers (12 peasant units) will give 80% garrison public order boost
    -Large: 1,440 soldiers (12 peasant units) will give 80% garrison public order boost
    -Huge: 2,880 soldiers (12 peasant units) will give 80% garrison public order boost
    I would also like to point out that these garrison sizes and their effects are consistent across all factions. All of the tests I conducted for this video were tested on the Roman Julii faction as seen in the video, a barbarian faction (Briton), and an advanced, non-roman faction (Macedon), and the numbers all work the same.

      Hey, BM, do you think the ratio applies with hastati in the darthmod? The 1 to every 1000? I ask about as hastati instead as you can't recruit peasants in darthmod. Thanks!

    The most cost-effective garrison troops are actually dogs, they have even cheaper upkeep per soldier than peasants. They need two turns and more money to recruit, however.

    • @javierfito5077
      @javierfito5077 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      and they are actually good for fighting

      but are they maximum unit suze though?

    • @krischan67
      @krischan67 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@sauromatae9728 The public order bonus for garrisons depends on the total amount of soldiers (or dogs in this case), not on the amount of units or the unit size. Dogs are 192 at huge unit size with 50 upkeep, peasants are 240 with 100 upkeep which is more per peasant than per dog/handler. But as said, they need two turns to recruit, so you cannot simply recruit one unit and move on with the army on the spot - and speedy advancement of the armies is crucial for efficiency. Also, not every faction has them and it needs a large town with stables to have them, so it's not always an option. On the long term it's worth replacing peasants with dogs, however.

    • @sauromatae9728
      @sauromatae9728 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@krischan67 192 gives less public order than 240. so it's not effeective in the big cities where all 19-20 slots are used. also, game only counts handlers, not dogs.

    • @krischan67
      @krischan67 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@sauromatae9728 My point was about cost efficiency, not about the maximum amount of garrison soldiers possible.
      Besides, you don't need such a huge garrison. Reducing taxes or even monthly or daily games and/or races will be cheaper in most cases.

  • @maxdecphoenix
    @maxdecphoenix 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    also like to point out that, by making the peasants in the city you plan to use them, it lowers the population. Reducing the population also reduces squalor penalty (which is more or less the game's term for 'unemployment', not 'filth' as it is commonly misconcieved), so this improves both public order AND population growth. So you get kinda a double bonus to public order. Atleast for awhile.
    Of course, once the population exceeds 20k, you'll still never be able to max it (as limited to 20spaces of units). Garrison bonus will continue to wither as population increases. At 28k~ pop, a full stack of peasants will only net about 65% bonus. Which works out to around -2% bonus per 1000 pop over 20k.

    In BI, troop type does calculate differently.
    Depends on the city level.
    A fully upgraded city doesn't seem to care whether its garrisoned by 6 peasants or 6 regular infantry units.
    But a minor town does. Peasants do not contribute to the garrison as much.

    Everything you said is true but I would like to add that in border towns or towns that may see some combat, a smaller force attack by enemy faction or some rebels that spawn like 3 or 4 unit ones, its better to have town watch, or archers and peltasts if stone walls, or maybe only the cheapest units without the poor morale debuff.

    • @BlueMatona
      @BlueMatona  5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      There really is no "right" strategy. One thing I love about Total War games is that you can basically approach the campaign in any way you like; there are no right or wrong people to attack. Making your own strategy to victory is a lot of the fun. My recommendation for your situation, though, is that you use the Greek peninsula that you already captured, since that is a very rich area, to be the economic backbone of your empire and continue to expand through the Roman factions. Fighting through Italy is a lot of fun since the cities are very close together and the Romans will have a bunch of large armies there waiting for you. From your current position, probably taking Rome and the Julii cities of Ariminum and Arretium would be a logical next step as well as expanding south into Sicily

    • @juliovielma8703
      @juliovielma8703 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      BlueMatona yes that is the good think about total war but the “right strategy” the only one is not to go against those roman armies without some great fhalanx

    • @MachinegunnerMugZ
      @MachinegunnerMugZ 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@juliovielma8703 Not actually. Greek provinces are the richest in the game, so using an army of assassins to remove family members and a diplomat to bribe remaining troops works great as well.

    • @wnd9434

      There are no right or wrong but usually i dont like destroying romans early as i get bored after few turns. Its like movie the main antagonist is defeated early it get dull. TH-cam almost didn’t even exist, and it sure didn’t have videos like this! You literally crushed all of my “knowledge” about garrisoning… I thought town watch was the best because well… they are supposed to watch the town! lol

      That was pretty much my conclusion, peasant your safe towns, while keeping some sort of troops in dangerous towns (or even create specific troops just for defending that move between towns). By now I'm already near the end of my greek campaign full map clearing, but I'll keep that in mind for the other ones. It also seems it makes things easier for barbarian cities that need less than 10 peasants (and some periodic extermination for cleaning space. By then, population growth surpasses your unit production count if on normal unit size, like me)

    • @BigWillyG1000
      @BigWillyG1000 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      One or two half decent units are useful to keep around even well away from the front just to keep the rebels that sprout constantly at bay. I've generally felt one unit of Tier 3 infantry and cavalry plus peasants in areas of significant population works well. In example one unit of equites and one of hastati plus peasants to get public order if playing pre-Marian Rome.

    • @wnd9434
      @wnd9434 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Dont disband in the city itself. Find some small town and do it. Disbanding will make them retire there so increase its population which make it harder to maintain

      they are also the best defence force in the game. you can start a battle, unleash the dogs and let them attack until all dogs dead. then withdraw. it will be a draw and the siege will continue, but because you lost no handlers the unit lost no men but did damage to the defenders, just keep repeating until u kill the sieging army ^^. literally the free cheese
