Mr Bruce was a genius. His arraignments and songwriting in my opinion blow away any of the classical symphony from 200 years ago.

@@vancelubben4527 Yes, but of course Keith Emerson wasn't just a piano player, he practically invented most modern synthesizers. And nobody can ever even come close to the genius of arrangement that Keith Emerson summoned when he did "Fanfare for the common man" (If you're not already familiar with it, you MUST check it out. You won't be disappointed. And please let me know if you do, I would be curious to hear what you think of it?) Not to take anything away from Billy Joel, Bruce Hornsby, Elton John, Jackson Browne, etc. I just feel like putting Keith Emerson in there is "apples and oranges". I think it's like trying to put Carl Palmer (of the same group) in the conversation with Neil Peart, Keith Moon, and John Bonham. Arguably the three greatest drummers of all time, but Carl Palmer is such an ARTIST of percussion instruments he simply stands alone. It's like back in the day when we would sit down and talk about the greatest guitar players of all time. Names like Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, Eddie Van Halen, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and I always believed that Jeff Healey belonged in that conversation. But there was always one knucklehead who would dare say the name Jimi Hendrix, while the rest of us realized you can't include Hendrix. He was an island of talent to himself.
Tupac and about 99% of rappers need to thanks the artists they sampled. Bruce Hornsby is an unmitigated musical genius.

If Tupac gets young people to listen to Bruce Hornsby, then it’s all good!
So many people don't pay attention to the most important lyric in the chorus, when Bruce sings "Ah, but don't you believe them." He's saying be the change that others say can never be. Powerful stuff.
Yes! It's extremely frustrating when listeners/reactioners don't get that the "Ah, but don't you believe them" is the remedy/solution/change for the negative/evil status quo, which seems fixed to those who make the claim that "that's just the way it is."
I agree. That's the main point of the song. Don't just accept situation especially if it is not right/correct.

The song is a lot more hopeful than it seems. Most don’t see it. That is definitely the most important lyric in the song.

Quick story. Bruce was playing near our home town. I wrote a letter to his band…(stamp/envelope etc. Early 90’s.) A week before the concert, I got a call from his publicist. We had backstage tickets! We met Bruce after the show on his tour bus. I said how I loved the piano bit. He had a Casio on the bus and proceeded to teach me the intro! I still can’t play it. It wasn’t the teachers fault either!! 5 years later he was in town for a concert, we were able to see him again, after concert on his tour bus! Guy is a gem!

Don Henley's 'End of the Innocence' was cowritten by Hornsby and he plays piano on it, and it is with this same kind of brightness. Hornsby also spent some time after this point playing keyboards for The Grateful Dead. Talented man.

@@Phillphine That's incorrect, the song was written by country songwriters Mike Reid and Allen Shamblin. But Hornsby played piano on it which certainly was a major contribution.
They need to do every Don Henley song from the 80s. Dirty Laundry, Boys of Summer, Sunset Grill, New York Minute, Heart of the Matter.

I want to add to the chorus of people urging you to listen to Hornsby's "Mandolin Rain." Truly a beautiful song and one of my all-time favorites. The way he sings it -- you'd think he has to be recalling something deep from his personal life! This song is so poignant but also strangely soothing at the same time! Go figure!

Nailed it. Something about the piano riff and percussion in the intro always reminded me of the motion on a big riverboat wheel-kind of a slow, chugging, driving, forward momentum if that makes sense-“boats steaming in, watch the side wheel spin.” That and the mandolin conveying “the sound of the summer storms;” it’s a song in which the musicality subtly reflects the lyrics and it’s just fantastic. To me, Bruce Hornsby’s musicianship is just so elite and well-developed.
Loved Mandolin rain in college, it always reminds me of Ann Arbor.
Bruce Hornsby is considered one of the greatest pianists, and an incredible musician.
That’s one of the greatest songs from that era. Truly a fantastic artist.
And interestingly, Tupac's "Changes" was only 6 years later, so both tracks are arguably from the same era.
"Every Little Kiss" "Mandolin Rain" and "On the Western Skyline" are all on the same album and are all magnificent songs...great job as always!

"The Valley Road" from the second album is another great one. Both of those albums are classics. After Bruce went solo without The Range, his sound got a little jazzier. Still a tremendous talent but the songs just weren't as tight as they were on the first two albums.
Totally agreed, "Mandolin Rain" still brings a heavy set of emotional responses out from me every time I hear it.
All the songs listed here are beyond fantastic..!!! He also sang with Clannad on “Something To Believe In”…another amazing song.

Knew you'd fall into this rabbit hole eventually. They were one of the best groups of the 80s, and Bruce himself is one of the best pianist's you'll find (right up there with Billy Joel, Elton John, and Tori Amos). "The Way It Is" was his breakout single, hitting #1 in 1986. He followed this up with "Mandolin Rain", "Every Little Kiss" and "The Valley Road" (I hope you do that one next, it has one of the best piano tracks I've EVER heard). I hope you'll be diving into Bruce's discography for months to come! Fun fact - Bruce was a member of The Grateful Dead for two years in the early 70s! He also was briefly part of the band Ambrosia, and was a touring musician for 80s diva Sheena Easton (someone you HAVE TO DO ON FEMALE FRIDAY!) (I recommend you start with "Morning Train".)

"The Way It Is" truly is one of the great MESSAGE songs in pop music history. Bruce Hornsby poignantly wrote about welfare, economic disparity, racism, plus the Civil Rights Act and the Economic Opportunity Act---both in 1964. And you're right, Amber: Hornsby is a brilliant pianist! Please react to BH&TR's "The Valley Road" and "Mandolin Rain".

I have some relatives who are staunch conservatives and some who are fierce progressives, and all of them give of their time and treasure to worthy causes and people who are in need. @@carlgibbons5777 Can't you hear the message in Bruce's song, he said " but don't you believe it". He is talking about their beliefs and the things they say. Things are changing, maybe not as fast as we want but they are.
I love the way he plays piano. It’s so bright and punctual. His voice is so clear too. Couple that with his storytelling lyrics and it’s clear why other artists sampled his work.
"The Way It Is" peaked at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1986. "Changes" peaked at #32 in 1999.
When this song hit and got nominated for a Grammy, he got a call from Elton John. EJ wanted to congratulate him on his unique piano style. He said that it was incredibly unique. They were blown away. The social commentary behind this song is great.
I was also wondering what they made of the lyrics,and compared to the words Tupac put to the tune in his rapping. The Way It Is became a hit in the UK in late summer 1986. Tupac's take on it Changes was big here at the start of 1999.
This is a terrific song and Mandolin in the Rain is also very beautiful

Oct. 15 1986, our son was born. One of my fav things to do with him was cuddle him to my chest and dance around the living room to this tune (on vinyl, of course!). He went on to learn piano through lessons, and when he was a teenager and Tupac's Changes was out, he would play it on his high school's piano (very, very well) with everyone swarmed around him! He's 37 now, and he can still play this flawlessly ❤

I still remember the very first time I heard this song on the radio -- it was very unusual at the time to have a piano-driven pop song, so this didn't sound like anything else that was being given airplay at the time.
The more you listen to the music of the older generations, the more you are going to find the artists from your generation sample or cover songs from the previous generations. Can't tell you how many time my girls came home excited about this new song some artist put out in the 90s and early 2000s and I'd pull out my CD of the original artist and play it for them.

So many people miss the line “but don’t you believe them” because he is hopeful. People say “that’s just the way it is“, and he says “but don’t you believe them“ because you can make change.

And just imagine, this was Bruce's first hit back in the day. His piano style blew everyone's minds back then. He spent some time playing keys on tour for the Grateful Dead after Brent Mydland's death. You should also check out his duet with Stevie Nicks, "Two Kinds Of Love".

Yes, I love that song "Two kinds of love' with Bruce singing the ballad with her. It is one of my fav songs from Stevie. It is on her album> "The other side of the mirror". I don't think many are familiar with that song, I hope they check it out because it is a beautiful song.

Saw him in concert he played Jacob's ladder told the audience he could play it because he wrote it so he wasn't stealing it

This song was written in 1985. Hornsby wrote it late one night in his garage, and then later added the sound track. Timeless and beautiful 👏

My brother started at William & Mary the year this song came out, so it always reminds me of him. I think the video of another Bruce Hornsby song was filmed on the W&M campus around that time as well.

He does a pretty fair hammered dulcimer too, a sound I've always loved. He plays it in the song The Red Plains.
You guys really need to do a video that has the lyrics. This entire song is about racial injustice. That gets lost because of Bruce Hornsby’s beautiful piano work! 😉

One of the finest artists of all time! He is unsurpassed in piano artistry, but also in his poetry / social commentary.... Don't miss it in the distraction of Tupac... Listen to the lyrics someday and really see the song and the people behind it and the times. Don't miss out. It's special.

The way Bruce plays piano, creating a rythm inside the rythm is stunning ! It makes me think about the way Phil Collins plays drums. Love it ! ❤️❤️❤️
I love this song, as well as Tupac's version of it. I would say Tupac's version is my favorite sample of all time because he stayed true to the original. The meaning of both songs is the same. The only difference is that Bruce said it the way someone with his life experiences would say it, while Tupac said it the way someone with his life experiences would.

Sampling is a huge part of the hip-hop culture. Bruce Hornsby released this song in 1986, and Tupac released it in 1998. Whenever I hear "Changes," I immediately think of Bruce Hornsby.

Guys like me who grew up in the 80s had the opposite reaction to you two, when I heard Tupac changes I was like "That's Bruce!!!"
Oh....I haven't heard this song in ages....such a great tune!!!!! I used to work at a family diner when I was in my late teens. The owners had no kids and I was the youngest waitress...so they kind of "adopted me". They worried over me and made sure I stayed in line as I was kind of a "wild child"....LOL!! The dish washer was a special needs older black man....he had the mentality of a child at times and we all loved him. The owners kind of "adopted" him too...helped keep him off the streets and out of trouble. He used to kill me....he would be in the back at the dish washer with his headphones on singing his heart out....about every other verse to some songs...then mumbling the rest....it was so cute and funny. This song brings back those memories of him because when this song came on the radio....he mumbled most of it....but the part "Get a job" he sang it loud and clear...and when I walked into the room he would run up to me, laughing, and say..."Yeah...people need to GET A JOB!!!".....He was a TRIP!!!! RIP Buddy Roe!! I will never forget all those long weekends working double shifts and having a blast with you!! You were a one of a kind human being...a big heart...who loved to sing.
Thankfully, Tupac's estate faithfully pays Bruce the royalties for sampling it.
Rappers sample music from all genres lol. Lot of them listened to and were exposed to multiple kinds of music growing up. 🎶

It hurts my heart that the message of this song was completely missed. Even seemingly good folk cannot be bothered to understand the problems humanity faces, let alone address any of it. The loneliness of wading through life watching people ignore anything that does not directly affect them has worn me out. The despair has turned to numbness, only way to cope.

A beautiful bitter sweet song that defined the time (1986-1987) and is still relevant. With this, the original version comes that distinctive feeling of melancholy with wisdom in Bruce's voice.
It was a huge song for Bruce. It hit number 1 on billboard, he won best new artist Grammy that year as well

Not only is Bruce Hornsby such a fantastic, passionate piano player and singer, but he is also a great songwriter as well; he wrote "The Way It Is" and he always has a meaning to his songs. There is a distinct message Bruce is conveying in this song & that shows why it went to #1. He wrote "The End of the Innocence" with Eagles Don Henley, who had a hit with it (with Bruce playing piano). "Mandolin Rain" & "Every Little Kiss" are awesome Bruce Hornsby & the Range songs. I've seen them in concert and they are even better Live. Bruce is the reason I learned to play piano and now a keyboard; he inspired me so much. What a talent he is.

Hornsby is a virtuoso pianist. I believe he is a musical director for a philharmonic orchestra now. No one is better. He plays every instrument. This song is a touchstone. So much more important than just pop music. It is a poem.
I thought that am the only one who gets this " over the moon feeling " when I hear and see this man bruce hornsby , playing his piano. Whenever I hear piano music, classical beethoven , debussy, strauss and others; concert or otherwise, i come alive. However bruce hornsby's style of playing, the dexterity of his fingers , his piano-tuned tone, altogether give me this "over the moon " high. Just love it. Thanks bruce .

Gods miss those times!! I was a lead guitar player and 20 years old in 1980. It probably was the most beautiful time in America for music. Music drove that whole decade and businesses were pouring millions of dollars for the homeless here in the USA!! Harry Bellefante even said…. I’ve seen many changes and things in my life! Civil rights movement, Viet Nam, Watergate, but one thing that happened in the 80s that will never happen again! America took care of itself for once and that time came so close to uniting people for great causes!
Bruce is a very talented pianist and songwriter. He’s written some amazing songs.
I need to address the term sampling. So many rap and hip hop artists have sampled from classic rock music, and my question would be. Do any of these sampling artists credit those they have sampled from? If not, then it seems to me that the word sampling could, and maybe should be replaced with the word stealing. Just food for thought. ❤️✌🏼😎

the original artist will get royalties from any song sampled by another artist , so Bruce H would have got a tidy sum from Tupac's version .

Zeppelin sampled a great many African-American blues artists of the 20's and they got sued by a few and had to pay up.
I remember when Vanilla Ice sampled Queen and he was made fun of. A few years later it was normal to sample other artists music. I call it stealing even though I know they have permission

It makes sense you’d have a negative opinion of sampling, as you don’t really seem to understand it. Nobody made fun of Vanilla Ice for sampling Under Pressure, but rather for the fact that he tried to deny it. Sampling in hip-hop predates Ice, Ice Baby by over a decade. Sugarhill Gang first, Will Smith (as Fresh Prince), Tone Loc, Run-D.M.C., Public Enemy, MC Hammer…all famously sampled multiple songs before Vanilla Ice.

It's amazing how often rap artists sample music from other genres. It demonstrates how versatile and talented they are to put the sounds together. Fans of them should really look at the sampled songs, and see the influences on their favorite rap artists. Can vastly open up their musical library. More from Bruce Hornsby & The Range, "Mandolin Rain", "Every Little Kiss", and "Valley Road". Knowing how much you guys love piano also give a listen to Ben Folds Five, with "Song for the Dumped", and "Selfless Cold and Composed".

I completely disagree. It's not hard to take someone elses work and change or alter it, at all. Anyone who does this is an inferior artist, to the original artist. So easy to ride on someone elses coattails, especially when the tune is still in the general public's awareness.

@@ToniMcGinty Sure. Absolutely. Music all around is great. But I'm always going to view an artist who does something completely original as superior to someone who doesn't.
Hornsby's compositions are absolutely beautiful, and his touch when playing is goddamn mind-blowing. It's like he knows all 88 keys on a first name basis. From what I understand the two songs have the same sort of message just seen from both sides. From this side Hornsby saying 'don't believe things can't change', and Tupac talking about finding a way to make changes happen.

"Every Little Kiss" is another great one.
Bruce is a killer player. He’s always had a great band. They famously would often do ‘requests’ sections of their live shows, where the audience could send up requests, and the band would jam out whatever the requests were. Extraordinary musicians.
