The best Sprint Spike: Nike Maxfly vs Adidas Prime SP2

  • After now doing a couple races as well as training in both of these spikes for a couple months I've made my decision on which spikes are superior !
    Both are good spikes but there is one clear winner when you hear my arguments !
    If Puma or New Balance want to get in on the action they can send me a pair of shoes if they like ? ;)
    Keen to hear your thoughts if you agree or disagree.

    i personally like the sp2’s a bit better. maxflys are way too narrow and feel like bricks on my feet. i have to take them off immediately after running. i’ve found the sp2’s to be much more versatile based on foot widths. i’m also a very powerful runner which is probably why i haven’t had any problems with the sp2. guess every product is made to fit different people. W vid btw

    • @jackhammered_
      @jackhammered_  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah i agree on all those points, especially around fit of the SP2. One of my athletes has wide feet and struggles with the maxfly. 100% you need to be a powerful runner for the SP2’s.
      Thanks for your comments!

    Personally I believe since these spikes are mainly meant for 400/200 runners. This is shown my the plate and how it has the ability to snap the plat laterally as well. You see the Sp2 more often in those races compared the 100 that is dominated by Max Fly spikes. They are both good but personally it comes down to your foot shape and event. They both perform very well. However, you will only get the most out of these spikes if you have good sprinting technique!!!

    • @jackhammered_
      @jackhammered_  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment ! I'd agree with that, definitely needing good technique regardless of the spikes. In Australia I've seen a lot of people go back to Maxfly after a couple races in the SP2 so I think it's still the more popular spike at the moment even in the 2's and 4's

      The 100m is MOST DEFINITELY NOT dominated by the max flys

    For me personally I don’t think you can beat the OG adidas prime sp’s or nike superfly elites. I find with the bubble in the nike’s & foam in the sp’s I really struggle to accelerate properly when coming out of the blocks & through my drive phase. I’m someone that likes to feel & receive feedback from the track and I have a hard time feeling this in the new style spikes. I mainly use both the sp 2’s or maxflys for my fly work at training.

    • @jackhammered_
      @jackhammered_  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I definitely agree with you on original Prime SP’s! My pre-accident PB is in those they are great spikes. I also agree feeling the track, couple of other athletes I know have said the same thing in terms of feeling the track, Maybe because of my joints I prefer that extra cushion lol. Also I’m probably not fast enough yet to really notice the difference personally.
      But yeah, out of those two SP2 v Maxfly, maxfly wins for me. I wonder where the next gen of spikes will go!

      You would love the ASICS Metasprint. They’ve got carbon fiber plates and are the only pin less spikes on the market. Very slept on spikes switched from the maxflys to them

    I’ve had two pairs of maxflys now and both the spike plates have cracked in the same spot. The bubble didn’t pop. I don’t know if it’s because of my form (I have pretty good form) but I’m now thinking of using the prime sp2. Is it better than the maxfly for the 400?

  • @aphay36

    Great videos on these spikes Jack. I am now well past my prime and sprinting masters for fun (but it's still had not to take it too seriously). My main attraction to these super spikes is longevity of my body (if only they were around 20 years ago, how nicer the track would have been on our bodies?) but also will not complain of immediate performance improvements. However it seems impossible to easily get hold of SP2's in Aus and even hard enough to find the Nike's in stock in certain sizes (I've seen blown bubbles too recently so I'm not keen on getting Nike's for that reason). I was always an Adidas runner (demolishers, powersprint 2, all those old things back then) so have a bit of loyalty there. I have managed to order a pair of Adizero Ambitions, they seem similar in some ways to the SP2's. Very interested to see how the MD spike goes over shorter distances (hopefully a bit more forgiving than the talk of the SP2 being so aggressive). Especially considering sprint spikes seem to have taken a lot of tech from MD spikes. Thoughts?

    • @jackhammered_
      @jackhammered_  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your comment Andrew !
      Haha yes! I still have a pair of the old adidas demolishers at home !
      It’s interesting some people pop the bubble straightaway whereas I’ve had a pair for over 18 months with consistent training and racing and it hasn’t popped. Nike will give a refund/replacement if you do pop them however!
      You’re not wrong about the availability! Very hard to source.
      I think you’ll like the adizero ambition. The women’s sprint hurdles World Record was broken by Amusan wearing them last year! So you can still definitely run fast in them.

      @aphay36 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jackhammered_ Had my first race in the Ambitions last weekend, very impressed! Very aggressive compared to anything I had worn before (10+ year old spikes). They put you very forwards on your feet. I can't imagine how aggressive SP2's must feel! I find it ridiculous that Adidas don't sell these things in Australia though (easily or reliably anyway), why? It seems strange they don't want to make money of these new spikes...

    What if you ran a 400m? I'm predominantly a 400m runner (occasional 100&200). Heard the maxflies are weird in corners. They are also quite heavy compared to other spikes right? Would your answer be different if you ran a 400.
    Cheers for another excellent video 💪

    • @jackhammered_
      @jackhammered_  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I've never struggled running a bend in the maxfly's, and plenty of olympic athletes seem to wear them for the 400. That's right they are a little bit heavier than the others but I think the added bounce cancels out the weight potentially ?
      So considering all that I don't think my answer would change for the 400!
      Thanks for the feedback on the vide as well

    The addidas is better just because the nike breaks a lot. Even it it is faster it is only a tiny margin. Like 0.10 maximum. Sprinters make the shoe fast. The finese is better option you won't slip on the blocks. And is just as fast as the prime sp.

  • @Mr.Sprint1703

    Which one is better for 100m? I personally think maxflys bcoz I won't have the fear of popping the bubble bcoz my form is pretty good. But I've also seen many people run in sp'2s more than maxfly, I'm currently using the ja fly-4 and I'm thinking to buy the maxfly next time. Adidas sp is just too expensive especially in India

    • @jackhammered_

      I personally prefer maxfly over the sp2. Both are good spikes with different advantages. I think whichever you like the look of and can realistically can access are obviously the best.
      I like the bounce and sound of the maxfly but i like the feel of the track from the sp2.

    If you pop the maxflys it's not because of your technique. Im a professional sprinter U18 I have 10.97 on the 100 hundred and I have a very good solid technique and I popped em. It's because of the force put into the ground, when it's too much for the air unit to handle it just pops.

    • @jackhammered_
      @jackhammered_  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I didn't say it was only because of technique, there are quite a few factors such as weather and bends that seem to effect it as well. I made a comment I have noticed that more people with a certain style of technique seem to pop more. I didn't say that all people avoid popping them.
      Just because you've run 10.97 doesn't mean that you don't have the technique I am talking about.
      Thanks for your comment !

    • @TheTreehouseFamily
      @TheTreehouseFamily ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Can’t be just about force into the ground because if that was the only reason, and you’re popping it at 10.97 due to force into the track then the elite sprinters running sub 10 would pop ever pair they’d put on half way through the race haha

    I find the Adidas way more comfortable than the Maxflys. Could you tell me how much your Adidas weigh? The claimed weight is 4.2 0z (119 g), however my SP2s in mint green (ID1736) weigh considerably more, around 5.5 oz. (155 g). If the claimed weight on the black SP2s (HR0225) is accurate, I'm thinking these are two different shoes, although marketed as the same (except for color). The Maxflys in my size are 0.4 oz lighter than these mint green Adidas .
