    One even worse thing, this is catching attention so quick because it's Aether, a mod with millions of downloads (or more). Imagine this happening to a couple of small mod authors who spend hundreds or thousands of hours of their free time writing up a mod to improve the quality of life of modded players FOR FREE. Only to see their work being plagiarized and posted onto the market for $10. It must really leave a sour taste in the mouth doesn't it.

    • @OzPayn
      @OzPayn 2 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      This is actually why kingbdogz and I were so passionate about getting this issue publicity. We don't really care too much about the Aether itself being ripped off, we can get by and we have enough of a platform for it to not heavily impact the reputation of our project. But there HAVE to be hundreds of smaller creators who are having their work blatantly stolen and sold for quick profit on the Bedrock marketplace. So ideally we'd like these issues actually fixed rather than simply drawing attention to our specific case.

    I remember back in 1.5 and before the mods were just adding tiny things like carpets and horses, Aether was one of the revolutionary mods that inspired people to make larger mods that drastically change the game, and it may very well be the reason we have mods like Create, AE2, Twilight Forest, Botania, Thermal Expansions (rip) etc. Seeing this mod getting tossed around and disrespected hurts me deeply.
    I believe the original version is still available at curseforge in 1.5.2, Aether II in 1.7.2 and Aether reborn for fabric at 1.12. so we can't enjoy it in the newest versions of the game unfortunately

    As a bedrock player it is incredibly frustrating to see what Mojang is doing to the game. For example in the recent update we just got shulker cloning and protection working against potions and they have just started developing spectated mode. Basic modes and functions of the game we don’t have some being worse than others like red stone and mob spawning. Also we see that Java will get updates that add bedrock exclusive features which is great but we very rarely see Java exclusive feature, it’s to the point where basic things are exiting to the community for features that should have been added months if not years back. Tl;dr 1.20 should be a parity update where they make the games basically identical

    It took me less than 3 seconds to research and determine that the copyright on Aether mod content is "Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0". Permission to "share" and "remix" allows for fans to do quite a lot of transformative work using the base concepts, and still distribute it to others. But selling it, and without so much as hinting at the original creators, let alone contacting them for permission? That is *offensively* blatant intellectual property theft, and I will absolutely disregard any other content by SNDBX that I might ever have considered purchasing.

We worked our asses off to make maps, mods, and other content only to see other teams get big by literally stealing other artists work. One thing I'll say, most of the marketplace is handled by MS, so that's where the crux of the issue lies. Basically only slightly better than Roblox creators stealing copywrite work

    9:45 Bug-trackers and status tags vary from project to project. The "won't fix" tag is extremely poorly worded and sounds very insulting and hostile, I have always hated it. That said, in this case, they tagged your bug-report as wont-fix because it's a duplicate of another bug, someone else had already reported it. It doesn't mean they're not going to fix it, it means _your_ bug-report is now closed and they will update the original bug-report about this problem as they fix it. (Another instance of wont-fix confusion is when developers tag a bug as wont-fix for a _specific version_ because they won't be able to fix it in time for that release and will fix it later. For example, a bug in Firefox might be flagged as "89 wont-fix, 90 wont-fix, 91 affected" because they don't expect to be able to fix it for version 89 or 90 but will try to fix it for version 91.

    • @TheKnewGreg
      @TheKnewGreg 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I don’t even know about that one. There are tags for duplicate bugs so I assume they’d use that (In fact, they marked one of my bugs as a “Duplicate” of another despite me very clearly explaining how it is different)
      That being said, it would be down to what the official response was beyond that, as a bug I had marked as “Won’t fix” was because they’d have to “Re-write” a system relating to nbt data, despite the fact that that’s what you’re supposed to do when you have a fundamental flaw in a data structure

Even when you get 60 FPS in Java (which I usually do) there is microstutters from frametime differences, but Bedrock has consistent, smooth 60 FPS for me. I don't play bedrock much because I agree with the other part of this post, just pointing out the part I found inaccurate.
      I would assume, at least, a game hacked together in a language that's not meant for them, started by a guy who basically just copied leaked infiniminer code and changed the language, is going to be worse than a game rewritten in a normal language by actual game devs with years of hindsight.

It's disappointing to see this happening considering Minecraft is backed by such a large corporation and should be treated in a way it deserves seeing that MC is their flagship title, but instead is suffering from the same issues many moneygrab AAA titles in the games industry are suffering from. Mojang really needs to step up their game on the backend of both Bedrock and Java editions.

    One thing to say. Corporate greed. Ever since Microsoft bought mojang, they have been doing everything and I mean everything to earn more money off of a beloved franchise. Bedrock is the perfect example of this. They don’t care about us consumers anymore and would want to pour more money on sh*tty micro transactions on the marketplace rather than just fixing this flawed game. Like they literally shut down the legacy console versions for this, and keep in mind that legacy was one of the best and most stable Minecraft versions to exist.

    Great video! I can say you covered this situation pretty well and thoroughly, as one of the developers who was around while this was all going down.
    Regarding the map being off the Marketplace though, it was recently brought to my attention there's an exploit in the Bedrock Marketplace's system that seems to let Marketplace content still be accessible and assumedly purchasable (hard to confirm directly since I wouldn't condone purchasing this map even for testing things like this, but the option for purchase is still visible) even after being taken off the Marketplace website or in-game listings, since sites like Bedrock Explorer have re-hosted links to content (such as one to SNDBX's Dimension) which send you directly to the content's Marketplace page in-game despite the removal of official listings. It's likely an oversight on Mojang or Microsoft's part, but it feels like a pretty glaring one I want to bring attention to, in hopes it can be noticed and resolved alongside the other issues the Marketplace has.

My theory is that because SNDBX voluntarily took the map down after our copyright complaint, rather than it being taken down after a copyright review by Microsoft themselves, its treated in the same way that a map would be if a creator decided to take it down for any reason.

    I cannot wait for your honest Bedrock breakdown! Bedrock being far and away inferior or Java is a hill I’m willing to die on and it’s amazing to me how much credit it gets just for being titled “Minecraft” even though it barely functions on some devices! Half the Minecraft subreddit is people posting weird bugs/game breaking glitches that all lead back to Bedrock edition! I wholeheartedly believe Java edition to be beautifully optimized (especially with the help of Optifine) for a fluid and intuitive gameplay experience on systems ranging from high end to medium-low end. It offers every paid Bedrock feature and more for free, including downloading community created worlds that are *not* tied to your Microsoft account and modding the game. And when I say “modding,” I’m not referring to Bedrock’s paid half-ass attempt at mods called “addons,” I’m referring to the countless high quality mods that can be installed via Forge or Fabric for absolutely free. The GUI on Java doesn’t lag when I open my inventory, it opens instantly. Bedrock, by default has the inventory GUI animate onto the screen after a short, but annoying, delay. Java remembers when I close my world that I don’t want the damn crafting guide to show up every time I open my inventory. Java doesn’t take it’s sweet time navigating through menus. The one *and only* thing Bedrock does better than Java is online play, if you ask me.

    For me, this is reminiscent of an older issue with the shating user-generated content in Minecraft. The issue being that in the modding community, you have people who download mods, then upload them to third-party websites, which, as you can imagine, hurts the revenue of mod developers. The major issue here is the fact that not only is blatant theft, (of a creative commons property, no less) but the theives also stand to make money from this. In my opinion, Mojang should take better care to enforce policies relating to copyright, and theft, so that behaviour such as this is discouraged.

    Yeah, you hit the nail on the head with why this got released onto the Marketplace.
    The Bedrock Edition marketplace has tons of copyrighted material on it that definitely isn't officially released by the creators (EX: Among Us skins, various other anime and video game based skins, etc). This is because the internal policy prevents the folks that approve content from blocking it for copyright reasons. Why?
    It is to avoid liability on Microsoft/Mojang's end. For example, if they DID block for copyright infringement, it would make them legally liable for anything that does get through, and it isn't a reasonable ask to expect the people reviewing and approving the content to know about every piece of copyrighted material in the world. So, the responsibility for dealing with copyrighted content is left solely on the copyright holders filing DMCA takedowns. Similar to youtube, the DMCAs give strikes to partners that don't go away and if they accumulate enough strikes then the partner isn't allowed to be a part of the marketplace anymore.

    I really hope your video breaking down the issues with modern Minecraft reaches the people it needs to. Ever since Bedrock became the "Main" version of the game and gave Java Edition it's subtitle, it's been more and more frustrating every single time I try playing it. Even on my above average computer, Bedrock somehow manages to have worse performance compared to Java without mods. This even extends to the Switch version which needs some heavy optimizations, seeing as it will frequently hang in the menu for minutes at a time when I select an option. Redstone also has no excuse for being different between the two versions, and the fact they outright state they aren't going to create parity between the two in that regard is frustrating to say the least. I wonder just how much more Bedrock has broken with it that I don't know about either, like the generation breaking after going out so far you showed off today. Absolutely appalling they outright said they won't fix it either. Java Edition has its own issues too, but with Bedrock being what most people are playing and it somehow being in a worse state is really not okay.

      @dimitribarronmore 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@venomousfrog5546 Not especially. Quasi-connectivity seems like it would be tricky to reimplement on purpose, but it's just a result of some iron door code being reused improperly. A handful of early redstone blocks just happen to consider themselves powered so long as the block above them is powered, because as far as that bit of the code is concerned they're two blocks tall.

  • @Melecie

    9:37 this is not the full story. this was closed as "won't fix" for being a duplicate, the duplicated one was marked the same because of a limitation bug baked into the present code that would require a whole rewrite to fix, and _that_ would cause its own problems (as the developer joke says, fix one bug and you get two)
    9:56 more opinionated, but i'm of the idea it's too late for redstone parity between bedrock and java. both already have their own redstone communities doing massive stuff, and bringing parity means removing one system entirely, which _will_ cause problems for already-built contraptions. there's also the option of a toggle, but that would be clunky, unintuitable, and non-beginner friendly. not to mention how java redstone runs on bugs-turned-features, which would have to be converted to actual features in bedrock (since they don't use the same programming language, bugs written in java may not have the same effect as ones in c++). redstone parity is not really worth it right now
    i know these aren't the main points of the video, i do agree mojang/microsoft/whoever runs the minecraft store needs to step up in making sure it's high quality and clean, but the conclusion was just not up to par.

      Yeah I have to agree, the end of the video kinda came out of nowhere and felt more like ragging on mojang for completely unrelated minor issues which would take way more effort to fix compared to how much it would actually improve the game in return 😔 The way they handle the marketplace should absolutely be put under scrutiny though, as this affects way more people than some specific bugs that barely anyone would really experience. Better examples could have probably been chosen to illustrate the issues with bedrock instead of very niche stuff, because yeah i don't wanna say that bedrock is all clean of course, just that the way he presented his point made it hard to agree with

      @@IbanPlay the thing is though little things go a long way and seeing how dedicated they are to “fixing” parity issues (those shouldn’t have ever been a thing but yk they built the game off of a damn tablet version) it should be realized that fixing bugs/security (especially problems that have been there for a long time) should be fixed after a certain amount of years. I get why it’s hard to fix things in games when the coding is completely different but they have the man power and money to do it. They just don’t want to, which if they do it doesn’t seem like it and they don’t communicate with fans and creators much besides the big titles and the only communication we get on the beta side of things are small snippets of bugs that were fixed and not any that might be in the works. They made the games code much harder then it has to be and that’s a fact when you compare it to Java. It was optimized for a small device, not a console with the power to handle more, which is why they had to fix the things like UI and loading.

Java and Bedrock are actual more similar than you think and have more similarities than differences!", when, if that was the case, why the hell would Bedrock players want parity with Java? Want more proof? Check out SilentWisperer's channel. Maybe there wouldn't be "infighting" if the devs got off the high horses, sat down for a moment, and think "Hmm. Maybe we should stop with the updates that will continue to alienate the two versions of the game, and maybe work on parity?". Yes, we all want to have fun playing this funky block game, but we can't have fun if the devs don't listen to both communities. @@kenny_the_real "There's a reason Minecraft is the #1 most sold game of all time as of now, and that reason is bedrock edition"
      *AAAAND* I call for an *OBJECTION!*
      Bedrock edition originally released as Pocket Edition in 2011. At the time, Minecraft's official sales statistics did not account for pocket edition, and by February of 2012, it was on the list of best selling games with 5 million copies sold. Mojang was bought in 2014 by Microsoft, and by the time that had happened, Minecraft had sold 49.5 million copies, placing it at #3. This was BEFORE Bedrock Edition, since Pocket Edition was not a cross platform experience. Minecraft Pocket Edition left beta in June of 2017, by which point Minecraft had sold 122 million copies. Bedrock Edition, which was a half assed port of Pocket Edition to all platforms, *FINALLY* released in September of 2017, and by January the game had sold 178 million copies(still in 2nd place for a while.) Finally, in 2020, Microsoft reported a grand total of 200 million copies, making it the #1 sold game of all time(so far.)
      Now, pay attention to the momentum. Between 2012 and 2014, 44.5 million copies had been sold. Between 2014 and 2017, an additional 72.5 million copies had been sold(roughly 48 million copies per 2 years.) The problem with your assertion is between 2017 and 2020, when Bedrock edition was most prevalent, and should've had the most impact, only *22 million copies were sold.* If anything, Bedrock appears to have *destroyed* the sales of Minecraft, not make it the #1 most sold game like you so claim. One look at 2022 and we're still not looking any better than the momentum of 2012-2017, with only 38 million copies sold in a two year time span.
      Conclusion:Bedrock has nothing to do with the fact that Minecraft is the game with the most sales ever.

      Fr, in Java I can just add mods for anything Mojang has ever neglected. Better performance? Mods. Bugfixes? Mods. Very small QoL stuff that don't harm gameplay? Mods.
      I even made a private Fabric modpack for playing vanilla JUST with client side mods (FYI: Mods that don't add new content and can be used in servers). The result? 100 mods. It isn't a lot, especially since I'm a person who plays modpacks with 200~300 mods, but I didn't want to go crazy and as I said before, it was just client side mods, and a few of them were libraries. Still, I don't like the fact that mojang is too lazy to add urgent performance and QoL stuff to the game, like inventory sorting, trash slots, better rendering, physics, better animations, immersive particles, hiding offhand items while not using them, as well as some of the usual must haves for modded (JEI, minimaps and WAILA), among others. Very small things that together make a huge difference and improve the gameplay (at least for me). So yeah, I wish they actually cared about all that stuff and it was not just about the money, but sadly, that is never the case with big companies like Micro$oft.
      It's just sad 23 year old neckbeards living on their parents' basement can pump out better mods than a trillionaire company with hundreds of programmers can make updates. Sure they don't have to worry about of the things they are adding to the game fits in Vanilla, but that doesn't mean those mods are bad. Just take a look at mods like Create, Astral Sorcery, Thaumcraft, Mekanism, Mekanism, etc. They don't fit the game at all but they are very impressive, hight quality mods you can get for free and the devs make wayy less money, the only money they get is through downloads or donations.

      @@Ehllay The beauty of it all is that the playerbase probably does a better job than mojang would ever do anyway. If mojang made half of the things that the mod community already does they would probably do it like 10 times worse. Like take performance improvements for example. Mojang would probably create more bugs than they would fix in an alternate universe where they wrote the same performance fixes that sodium or optifine are designed to fix. Also if mojang were to do this, then there would be no reason for something like optifine to exist and thus shader packs would also probably not be a thing. I honestly wouldn't have it any other way than it is now. Java edition minecraft is by far the superior version of the game because clients like fabric and forge literally make the game modular, you just pop anything and everything you could ever want onto it as a module and you add or remove them as you please. Literally anything is possible inside of minecraft because of this modular design. And this also echoes the spirit of the game because minecraft was created with the idea that you can build anything you like and to have absolute creative freedom, you can tweak literally everything about it from the textures, to the blocks, to the freaking game mechanics and CONTENT. And you can build cities, towns, and technological marvels using redstone. I mean this video game is the shining beacon to THE WHOLE WORLD as to what true creative freedom looks like. Minecraft is the greatest video game to EVER exist, and anyone who says otherwise either has an IQ of 60, has only ever seen the bedrock version (the cut down version), or lives in a cave.

      @@ambrosekillpack4841 I do agree that modders sometimes do a far worse worse job than mojang when it comes to the quality and originality of their features. For example take Quark's frogs. If you compare them to Vanilla frogs, they have a awful model and it is practically useless. Not saying that the entirety of Quark is bad, in fact, I love that mod and some of the features it had in the past even got into the game, like basalt, I just think the frogs look bad.
      Also, Mojang actually tried to buy Optifine but it didn't go well, as the autor was kinda greedy and wanted to keep selling capes and that stuff. If Optifine or Sodium were implemented into the game, I don't think there would be many bugs, those mods are pretty stable on their own, they only cause issues with other mods, but modders can make their mods compatible with them anyway (except for OF).
      Also you said that if we get an official performance update, then mods like Sodium wouldn't be needed anymore, however it is pretty likely that those mods will find another ways of optimizing the game, however if the performance update was actually really good, then the issues with performance in the past would be gone and we wouldn't need mods to make the game run better, and I honestly think that if the players of the game need a mod to make the game run better, then there's something wrong with your game. A lot of games like Terraria or Skyrim don't need performance mods to be playable after all
