On the other hand Hall & Oates are a pop/rock group that made a cover of Mike's song, adding their own style and expanding the song the way they liked it for their audience. In other words, is a matter of tastes. I prefer Oldfield's version because the orchestral sound it has.

Pepsi sang this on the Now and Then tour in '99 and every recording of the song from then has the same problem. But she always seems to sing everything else fine. Makes me think something about the mix of this particular song was problematic for her hearing, particularly because as the song builds, it seems to get worse.
I never understood the line “bark worse my bite” in context of this song and it’s triggered me since the late 90s resulting in a few arguments over the years. Surely if you were a family man you wouldn’t be stating your bark is worse than bite, It makes no sense. So my question Is, is he saying my bark is worse than my bite, to the prostitute so she continues to pursue him and take her advances, in which case why say “push me to far I just might” ? Or does he mean that he will beat her up if she doesn’t go away ? Anyone clear up what they think is the interpretation as it’s pissed me off for best part of 20 year😂 A better lyric would have been “he said leave m me alone, I’m a family man and I don’t want your business tonight”
He reverts the situation, that is it, and that is shocking for her. She does not have to be a prostitute, but assumes that she attracts men, also this man, like all others, and to get her, they must pay "a price" - money or whatever other advantage that he must grant her to get her. He does not play that game: He is convinced that he himself is attractive, and that own attractiveness is his "bark". But he does not bite - meaning, he will not go with her. I understand the song to highlight the woman's situation, as for her, as an attractive woman, it is traumatic to be refused, and the only reaction she has left is disdain. He reveals that she wants something from him, which he is free to decline.
He really wants her but is playing hard to get with that specific line of the song. He could just walk away and ignore her but he doesn't: he keeps communicating with her.
That's not true AT ALL. There are several covers better than the originals, this is not the case here, though. The original by mike is far better than H&O's version.
gonogazz there are plenty of songs written by Bob Dylan that are covered by other artists and turned out way better than any of Bob Dylan’s songs. So I think many times covers are better than the original.

I think this live version works real well. Helen Pepsi DeMacque gives the song a lot of attitude, together with Mike Oldfield and band.
