- Welcome to our annual Monster Energy Preview Shows for the 2024 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship. The season will be kicking off in just a couple weeks inside Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California, and the competition is expected to be fierce. Racer X's Jason Weigandt welcomes Steve Matthes and Jason Thomas back as the trio prepares you for the upcoming season.
In Episode 3, we discuss five riders that have the potential to do some damage in 2024 but also enter the year with some question marks. Justin Barcia had one of his strongest years on a 450 going last season before breaking his collarbone in Nashville. He was injured again in the final SMX round. Can he get right back to that strong form? Malcolm Stewart missed almost all of 2023 with a torn ACL but he showed flashes of elite speed in the two races he did compete in last year. Then there's rookie Hunter Lawrence who isn't getting near the hype his brother Jett is but could play a big factor in his 450SX debut. We also talk about Adam Cianciarulo and Aaron Plessinger who had consistent rides in 2023, but will we see more breakout performances from them this year? Let's dive in!

Y’all are sleepin on Hunter! This guy is smart. He will capitalize on opportunities that are available when they are available, just like he did in 250s. This past year was really the first year he was healthy. Exciting season coming up.

yeah, and he also has the advantage of having the top guy being his brother. This is not a just breaking into the top 5 guy. Look at how people struggle to say how good Jett is, instead wanting to bring up stats from the past about "rookies". Christian Craig was not expected to win in the 450s. He was good int he 250s but still a trophy hunter.
How’s anyone “sleeping on Hunter”?? He’s never raced a 450 AMA race. They put him on this show, which is a huge thumbs up. No ones sleeping on him. 🤦🏻
You could say that about most former 250 champs who moved into the 450 class what happened to Christian Craig though

Probably the most important thing about the upcoming season: Hope we have a healthy, injury free season.
it doesn't matter, parody in motocross, or racing in general, is an illusion. if every guy made it all 17 rounds you'd still have the same outcome. 1-3 contenders, 4-5 race winners...and one champion.
alot of you guys have this fantasy that if all the guys remain healthy that there will be bar-to-bar racing at every corner at every track for all 20 minutes...and that there will 17 race winners and 22 riders in contention for the championship going into the last round.
wake up....have you not been paying attention to the sport? for 50 years it's been the same thing, over and over. 1 guy wins, 1 guy sometimes wins, and a 3rd guy whop never wins but consistently stacks points. those 3 will will suck up all the podiums and points. same as it ever was.
I'm hoping it's not a mudder. Historically, the races that seemed the best on paper have ended up being A1 mudders

I think Hunter is always better when Jett is on the track with him. It seems like he can follow Jett closely and pass people he wouldn't otherwise be able to pass. I think he will be faster than everybody thinks he will.

Hunter is gonna take a while to figure out how to get around a couple of these guys on certain tracks but he's absolutely gonna try to follow jet's lines and quite a few riders are gonna get a 2for1 😂

With Jet, Eli and Chase there's going to be a new pace nobody has seen b4.
Hopefully the 3 stay healthy all year and we have a few other riders challenging them at times.

If Barcia's improved on-track sportsmanship continues I'd love to see him do well. He's a hard worker that earns and deserves results.

No, Hunter is not the same as previous examples given for those moving up to 450 SX . His riding maturity and ability to learn and not repeat the same mistakes makes him different. His calm approach to race craft will serve him well with the potential for a podium by Daytona.
Crazy to put him on the same level as Craig and those guys, Dude just went against Kenny and Jett and won a race after just ride 2 weeks the 450, come on!

Hunter will be good, but he’ll hover around that 7th to 10 spot the majority of the season. maybe a podium with a good start.

So Jason Anderson in 2022 had 7 Supercross wins and if I'm not mistaken, 5 wins in a row, then 2023 Kawasaki decides to change the Shock??? Why?

@goldsbym I'm not saying it paid off, I'm saying it's well known that Kawasaki uses data to make changes to the motorcycle, whether the rider likes it or not. Which is exactly wht happened last year when they made him run the BFC. I don't agree with it, I'm a kawi guy and hombre is one of my favorite riders so I agree with you that winning 7 should have been enough for him to choose his settings and equipment with little to no input from Japan.

14:27 the moment Hunter locked up some job security. The last corner pass on Thrasher was one of the best race finishes I’ve seen and the look on Lars face says it all.

I was going to disagree with you because AC raced all 17 SX rds 11 MX rds & 3 SMX rds.
Because I totally forgot Dylan finished 2nd in MX behind Jett & had better results in MX & SMX than AC. But he crashed out of SX is why I'm thinking they pushed him back in the list since this is basically a SX preview
Everyone reads too much into these like they are "power rankings." I needed an episode with a Kawasaki guy in it so we could ask Keefer about the new KX450, but we couldn't fit Keefer's Kawi take into the Anderson episode because we also had to fit in a discussion about Roczen's Suzuki and Webb switching to Yamaha. So I had to split AC off and put him somewhere for the Kawi discussion....but Episode 4 has like 15 other guys and we needed Keefer to tackle other topics there. So Kawi/AC go into Episode 3.
Matthes was also wondering why I had Hunter in Episode 3....it was because we needed a Keefer/Honda take in a show, but there wasn't room in Episode 1 with Jett because we had a long Sexton/KTM discussion there.
Power rankings are lame. This isn't that.

I didn’t mean it as a critic though it was more about the fact that due to their popularity guys like AC and AP will always be in front of guys like Ferrandis even though his career is way more impressive regarding the results.

This is Supercross bro and on a 450 AC he been historically better
Hunter just outrode roczen 1v1 for full motos in Paris. There are maybe a handful of guys in the world who can do that. He did that in his first race. Not only did he have a good 250 season, but he also gapped anyone at mxdn when he stayed upright. Hunter is definitely underrated just due to jett a bit. But he will be quick
The difference between Hunter and all the previous 450 rookies mentioned is the fact that Jett is his brother, training partner, and yardstick! Hunter will come in on or close to Jett's level which will be the level everyone else will have to rise to. He will also know/believe that he is capable of matching and beating Jett. No one else has ever come into the class into the 450 class as a rookie in that unique situation.
Barcia has the speed and the right attitude, Stewart has the raw speed. Hunter is the whole package, Cianciarulo is on the cusp and AP is the all time fan favorite. This year is going to be great, love to see a whole row of guys that are going to FIGHT tooth and nail for the win.
Personally I think the guys are really sleeping on Hunter, his riding partner is his little bro after all...
I really think that Barcia has a breakout yr.
He’s really revised and improved his riding style. He has the right attitude, and the right motivation.
All it takes is consistency with this deep field
@@BLUUU52 Yeah for sure Barcia showed up during SMX too bad he hit that spot at the face of that jump in LA and had his back wheel slide as he went airborne, he ate shit hard. If he can ride like he was before that wreck we'll see him atop the podium.
Hunter is making multiple podiums and maybe even end the championship standing up there beside Jett through consistency. Its laughable that you think he won't.
You're talking about steve 'clownhole' matthes, the guy who said Jet wouldn't get a 450 race win, on this very show.
The difference between Hunter is that he can genuinely win a race. He’s so smooth and consistent. Craig and the other guys can throw burner laps then they have mistakes. I think that’s the difference. Hunter may consistently be 3-5 but he can and I bet does pull off a win this year.
IMO Craig isn’t the strongest mentally. He folded in ‘21 when Colt came good and Jett was up and coming then almost threw it away in the last couple rounds in ‘22 when Hunter pressured him.
Idk why but I have a good feeling about AP this year

Huge Eli fan and hope he can push the limits to stay up front and be healthy the whole way, but AC's mental attitude and the way he looks at life is motivating, and hoping to see him battling up front.
Barcia was victimized in 2023. I watched the entire series 3 times (retired/bored af) and Anderson was an antagonist to Mookie & Barcia in ‘23. In ‘22 Anderson took out Roczen at least three times (in addition to Barcia and Mookie) and I believe Anderson shook Ken’s safety confidence on the track. No one ever commented on what and who Anderson really has been. The AMA finally held him accountable this year with a six month probation…
Also the commentators, far too often RC would say, “Grab your popcorn, Barcia’s coming,” when Justin was NOT riding dirty… These accusations from the TV cast against Barcia were unnecessary and didn’t reflect who the real antagonist has been for two years; Anderson…
Barcia in previous years has been aggressive with passing, but has really calmed it all down these last two seasons.

the last few years, the 450 rookies were pretty old and werent looked at as possible future champs in premier class, this year with the lawrence brothers and j coop going 450SX, it feels like the youth talent are moving up. this will truly shake up the top 5. change of the guard coming. vets will fight for space up front going forward.
Justin is like 27. He took time away from the sport in his prime so he didn't have to lose Jet or Hunter, that is about as weak as it gets. The dude is a bust, I don't know how he gets a ride.

You guys were comparing Hunter coming in as rookie season to the other guys on the list in comparison to people who won like McGrath & Dungey. I have a little beef with the Dungey comparison McGrath beat the defending champion as a rookie. Dungey won in 2010 without Stewart & Reed it's also why I take a "little" away from Jetts rookie MX season. Although he went undefeated he didn't have much of a field (no disrespect to those who were there & no disrespect to Jett accomplishing an undefeated season. Which in itself is difficult despite not having the top talent there or healthy including the defending champion)🏆

*Kenny* put it on him with no outdoor training & a healthy *Chase* was right there. *Dylan* finished 2nd in MX points. Had he been healthy with time to get comfortable on the bike.
I'm a *Jett* fan & think he's good for the sport. I gave him credit for the undefeated season but with a diluted field is still a accomplishment not to have a crash or bike problem. But there's less scenarios for bad start, crashes, harder to get through the field Etc. With a healthy field a half dozen riders could Win *(Anderson* won 2 in in 2022 & *Dylan* won 6 in 2021 *Webb* in 2019) *Kenny, Eli & Chase* (including *Jett* that's seven 450 champs🏆)

Watching anything with Matthis and JT, reminds me of the awkwardness of hanging out with friends who are dating/married, and the whole time you're around them, it's a guarantee they'll be fighting and acting passive agressive with eachother.
it's tough to gauge this year's team because the field of competitors is so loaded, it's hard to pick a favorite. once you take out all previous champs (250 and 450), former race winners, and former podium guys, you're pretty much left with privateers and maybe three other guys. i think it'll come down to who can race all 17 rounds and stay competitive over who is the most talented

One thing to note with Hunter that makes him different than AP, ZO, etc…..is that he trains with Jett and I can assure you they’ve done nothing but push each other training wise.
Is it just me, or is it wild that the Austrian brands have the ability to change a chassis because of their brands and none of the Japanese brands can? Kind of an unfair option for them.
