Frustrated with acrylic pour fails? Here's how to fix it!

  • As an acrylic pour artist learning from other pouring artist online I find myself overwhelmed by all the different paint pouring techniques. Most beginners give up pouring because they don't stick to a single technique and master it before moving on to another. This advice will help remedy constant acrylic pour fails.
    This waffling back and forth between fluid art technique stunts the growth of acrylic pour artists. My recommendation is to master the straight pour acrylic pouring technique.
    Mastering the straight pour will provide you with the proper baseline of understating of paint consistencies, color theory, paint stacking, and composition. This learning carries over in to all other acrylic pouring techniques.

    When I first started painting, in November of 2020, I didn't know how to subscribe - I never bothered with TH-cam. I'd look up an artist. I was watching Tammy Anderson Art, Mixed Media Girl, Olga Soby, and Molly's Artistry older videos - all doing straight pours. I should have started there instead of jumping on everything that intrigued me.
    Even though I'm Advanced in MS Word, I've decided to actually take tutorials starting from the very beginning. I think I need to do that with painting!

    • @LeftBrainedArtist

    I thought my first one turned out good but then I ran out of paint, but when I tried to add to it, it looked terrible. I thought pouring was easy and I just had to but different colors in a cup and pour it in the middle and move it around so it covered the canvas as I saw in one video. I didn't know there was a certain way to do it. I probably wasted my money on all that paint.

    • @LeftBrainedArtist
      @LeftBrainedArtist  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think failure is actually the best teacher. Did you have enough paint to create some more paintings? you can paint right over the top of your first if you really don't like it. Change one or two things and try again (enough paint and paint consistency are the most common errors).

    Question below comment: I’ve stalked your page and subscribed because you are super thorough with your posts! I’m taking your advice and going back to the basic’s as I’m clearly doing something wrong with trying various techniques 😂
    My question is regarding paints and floetrol. I’m currently using Artists Loft, Acrylic Ready Mixed Pouring Paints. I’m not getting those gorgeous big cells I always see in videos, but I do get a few smaller cells time to time. Should I be adding floetrol to my ready mix paints? Is there a brand you would recommend vs what I’m currently using? Thank you for any and all advice!!

    • @LeftBrainedArtist
      @LeftBrainedArtist  ปีที่แล้ว

      No. Ready mix paints do not need any pouring mediumd (Floetrol in this case). For cells you either need to be varying the densities of the paints you are using, use a few drops of silicone oil, or be using a color or two that are metallic or iridescent (they are "lighter" than other colors and will bubble up to the top and form cells).
      If you want cells that are very cirular and regular you want to use silicone. If you want more of the cloud looking cells than varying the density of paints you use or using metallic paints can get you those.

    Hello! I discovered your channel after I did my first 'pour' (just a practice with leftover supplies before I tried anything too serious) and you're honestly a godsend! There's one thing I'd like to ask that may not be completely relevant to this video - how do you go about removing leftover oils from the surface of a dried pour before applying a varnish? ^^

    • @LeftBrainedArtist
      @LeftBrainedArtist  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a whole video in itself. Lightly washing with Windex, alcohol, or watered down dish detergent are my favorites for regular varnishes. If you are doing resin you need a whole lot more washing or a isolation layer as it is very reactive with even the slightest of oils.

    How long does it take for a painting like that to dry? I did one yesterday that i love. But the top of the canvas is not dry at all and some areas around the edges that have dried are now wrinkled.

    • @LeftBrainedArtist
      @LeftBrainedArtist  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      16x20 and smaller are usually dry to the touch by 48 hours but not fully cured for 7 - 14 days. The curling at the edges indicates the paint didn't stick to the painting surface, the painting surface itself is warping, or there was too much paint left on the surface. Without seeing a picture though I am only giving the normal things I have seen and not exactly what might have happened to yours Amanda.

    Beginner questions. Both are related to each other.
    I just purchased some 4oz bottles of Liquitex. I'd like to have colors in plastic bottles so they are ready when I want to pour. I really don't want to thin my paint before I start every project. It kills my momentum. lol
    I've got paint and I've got bottles. Now what? I'm sure you have a video on this already, I just haven't been able to find it.
    Floetrol, Elmer's glue...why not just use water to thin out the paints? I've seen videos on which ones are better than the others, but I didn't see one explaining why I would use the chemicals instead of just plain water.
    Again, I'm sure you've covered this in videos already, so if you could just point me to the appropriate videos, I would greatly appreciate it.
    I get inspirations from Molly and Olga, but I get my knowledge from you. Please feel the responsibility. LOL. Just kidding...sort of. :)
    I know I should find a blog or something for the rest of this post, but I feel like typing some more....
    Did my first pours yesterday. Here's what I learned.
    Colander pour (inspired by Molly). Lesson learned: the type of colander is critical to the process or you won't get what you're expecting.
    Dutch Pour (inspired by Molly, Olga). Lesson learned: Don't be stingy with the paint, especially the basecoat. Too much is better than too little. Don't try to roll the canvas to spread the basecoat. Use a blow dryer. Duh.
    None of my pours came out terribly great, but only one of them was so bad (muddy) that it needed to be wiped. It'll be more fun if I can get over my hangup about "wasting paint".
    Biggest lesson: Watching too many videos before even doing a first pour can be paralyzing. Found so many things I want to do that I couldn't decide which to do first.

    • @LeftBrainedArtist
      @LeftBrainedArtist  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can mix your paint and put it in a bottle. I don't generally do it becuse I am using so many different paints and mediums and experimenting. Once you have a mix you like just whip it up in a big batch and put it in the bottle. Make sure it is air tight.
      Cost. It is much more expensive per ounce to use paint and water than to use it diluted with Glue or Floetrol. I have a video about that here - th-cam.com/video/MhEd533vqig/w-d-xo.html
      FYI when you don't like a painting scrape the paint in to a container and use it as a base coat for another painting.
