Learn something new. I was told they used to mark a fill-line in CHALK. Yours makes more sense and has more backing then some old dude in a warehouses lol
Guys, imma be Real right now. I went to the doctor earlier today. They said I have Bell's palsy. I'm taking medication for for it and they said it'll last a couple of weeks. But seeing shady upload a new video brings a half-smile to my face. But a full one in my heart. Keep the good work
I’ve had it before. On the right side of my face. It’s frightening at first, but as long as you have stuff like this to lighten your mood and help you half smile, you’ll pull through.
Don't worry about it too much. My mom had bells also, but only like a year later, you could only tell if she was sick or tired, and it's been like that ever since and even then people have to be looking closely to notice. You will be OK.
I always thought that the whole saga with Daria, Tom, and Jane was something that humanized Daria which was so needed for her character. She wasn’t a mouthpiece or the only voice of reason; she was a teenager who made an impulsive decision and had to face the fallout from it. Also I fully agree that Tom needed more time to stand on his own instead of being part of an attached set to Daria and/or Jane. He got introduced rather late in the show and really didn’t get his own time to develop which is a real shame since he bounced off of Daria and Jane so well. I think he should have been a transfer student into Lawndale instead of a private school like Ted.
Jane showing up to take pictures reminds me of an actual thing that happened when I was in college. Once a year, we had a concert on campus. Pretty much everything else was closed that day, and it was never on a day with classes. The vast majority of students would show up and get wasted on both alcohol and whatever drugs they could score. As someone who hates crowds and loud noises, I (and most of my friends) would usually come up with ways to avoid it, but since it was 30 feet from my dorm, that meant getting up early and finding somewhere to hide. One year, I actually went out of curiosity/desire to find food with everything else closed, and ran into a friend of mine who was really into writing his own music and creating art of all kinds. He'd noticed that pretty much every school club, department, etc. had their own shirt for the event, so he was surreptitiously taking photos of as many shirt backs as he could to make a photo collage. It was actually really fun helping him find designs he hadn't snapped yet and talking about the project (although I fled as soon as the music got too loud).
As someone in high school the same time as when Daria aired, Jodi's racial identity was topical. A lot of black kids, especially like Jodi, struggled a lot. Our parents grew up in the Civil Rights era and instilled to work 200% harder. If you exhibited any sort of intellect, you were showcased like a museum exhibit but in a patronizing way. It made sense and was relatable to us back then.
Then in the era immediately afterward, every token black kid on a show had to be turbo nerdy, like "look see? Black people can be nerds too! We're not making them thugs OR making them overly perfect. We can have our points now, right?"
Hm I honestly loved Tom as a character. He just always gave off the vibe of a cool guy and was enjoyable since he wasn't something shoved in our face. He was just there and he was nice earcandy with his remarks.
Kind of makes the fact that Daria broke up with him in the series finale "Is it College Yet?" all the more sad. I think this goes along with what Shady was saying in his "Arts and Crass" review, that Daria has such a negative outlook on things that she's willing to completely give up opportunities, in this case that includes relationships.
he's more or less fine. it's the dumb ways Daria acts around him that make you dread his arrival. Particularly once they became official, she turned into every stereotype of an irrational girlfriend. And for some reason she never seems to pick up on that and change. People rag on her a lot but I think that's really her only flaw. She gets accused of being 'mean' or even 'bullying' because everything today is totally pants on head, but nobody she snarks at is intelligent enough to understand the insult, so no damage done.
It’s so strange but I feel like Daria analysis videos are coming up more frequently now. Maybe it’s just my feed but I’m so glad other ppl actually watch it besides my mom 20 years ago lol
@@wjzav1971 AND water. let's be fair. If you use enough water, it doesn't matter if you use your hand. Though what's weird is a lot of those cultures have limited access to water. Well, the middle eastern ones... india... it's everywhere, but.. plumbing took a long time to catch on. Anyway you'd think a less-water-intensive form of cleaning yourself would be the norm.
I feel you on Daria/Ted and the Jody scenes. Also on Tom, I remember not disliking him save for the love triangle mess and besides that was an okay character but he did get stuck in being mostly a love interest/support character for Daria and pretty much it til their break up.
I love your Daria videos so much dude. I watch your king of the hill ones too but thats a show i enjoy less (gasp). Always a good day to see Daria in my Shady Feed
Great episode, great commentary. Shady you are by far my favorite youtuber for stuff like this. Also, introvert, 90s kid, public school. Same for me at my school you knew about homecoming for easily 2 whole months prior to it happening. Normally starting with posters everywhere than the last couple weeks constant announcements. And our school had announcements even between classes (Not always but it wasn't uncommon to see anywhere from 2 a day to 1 every other day) Letting you know up coming stuff from a simple book fair, to yes, homecoming. Always felt like it was more for the teachers or sports team cause out of maybe 500 people at my high school never more than 50 people went but we also had our own little get together around the same time also among clicks so for me and my nerdy friends we didn't go to home coming, but we still hung out, ate pizza, listened to music, game, so on but what ever each group of friends found fun pretty much was what we did on our own around that time.
Great reaction! I'd love to see you react to the musical episode. Just FYI: It's actually "chock full," not chalk. The term may be from Old English or Old French, but no one is really certain. The popular British way to say it is "chockablock."
I mean, I was a jock in highschool. Never once cared about homecoming. There was quite a few times I had no clue when it was till the day of, and that's only cause my friends asked me to come last minute, or I was in it, and someone reminded me.
Shady's laugh pretty much always feels genuine to me, even if it's scripted for the video. Compared to say, CinemaSin's annoying fake ass laugh, I actually feel like Shady's gut laughs only enhance the comedy. The laugh counter was a nice touch, but I'm certainly not complaining about how often he shows his enjoyment of these jokes.
It's actually "Chock-full" "c.1400, chokkeful “crammed full,” possibly from choke “cheek” (see cheek (n.)). Or it may be from Old French choquier “collide, crash, hit” [similar to shock]." Middle English chokkeful already had the same meaning as modern chock-full. Both this word and choke “to strangle” likely derive ultimately from Old English words meaning “jaw, cheek.” The end result is the same: a mouthful.
Yes! I was worried you were going to jump straight into "Dye Dye My Darling." I hope you look over the whole saga with "Fire!" and "Mart of Darkness" . Specially because I started to watch Daria because of you.
Hopefully that moment in "Psycho Therapy" also gets an honorable mention at least, you can tell that was likely the beginning of Jane and Tom's downward spiral when it came to their relationship, Jane really should have communicated with Tom and let him know about that webcam.
So, to answer your question, it's not 'Chalk' full, it's 'Chock' full. Which is in reference to a 'chock', more commonly known as a tire wedge. Referencing how tight you jam those suckers in there.
Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if Jodie and Mack were voted King and Queen constantly by merit alone. Their both very social, very friendly in a genuine way, do a lot for their school via sports or volunteering and are considered good looking by a number of characters. I'm not saying race isn't a factor, but they seem like shoe ins either way.
Plus, after the first time, you kinda had to keep doing it, or you'd look like you were yanking it away. Much like a lot of social movements, there's no exit strategy because change automatically makes you look opposed to the thing.
You couldn’t forget homecoming in my school because they announced it every day up until the actual date, and ON the date they’d cut the last ten minutes of class for the marching band to blare out as they walked through the hallways. When I was a senior I got to drop eighth period for senior early release so I finally got out of going to the migraine inducing pep rally beforehand. There’s only so many times a person can handle cheerleaders dancing and singing and cheering about longhorns!
tom as a thematic device? yes. i actually like tom but the writers really failed the character by having everything he does surrounding daria and/or jane. in some of those season 5 eps we see a bit of an animosity between him and his family - explore that writers!
Chalk and chock are homophones! They only sound the same but their meanings are completely different. Chock is something (usually a block of wood) used to hold things in place by being pressed up against them. (Eg: A wagon wheel can be held in place by a block of wood pressed up on either side of a wagon wheel to keep it from rotating) Therefore to be chock full of something is to have a place so tightly packed that nothing can move.

Good on you for building up to Dye Dye my Darling, it would definitely feel weird diving into that and not having the context of the developing relationship between Daria and Tom. Not to mention "Psycho Therapy", "Mart of Darkness", and "Fire!" all show the gradual decline of Jane and Tom's relationship. And and like you, I really like Jane as a character....BUT admittedly she's not her best in these episodes, though to her credit she does admit to her mistakes. But it'll be interesting to see what you have to say about these moments.
I missed you and I am not just a Daria fan, Its a good day for me whenever you upload anything. I do hope The Daria Hunter ends up on your list of darias to review.
I never saw this show, but I’ve always been curious about it since I’ve heard of it, seems like a show I can really relate to. Your reviews are very thorough.
I was always in my own world in high school. I never knew when homecoming or certain games or any of that stuff was going on until it was going on. Or after the fact. I just didn't pay attention to that stuff. So I have no problem believing Daria not knowing it was homecoming day whatever.
13:15 older dude here, I can comment on that. in the 80s and 90s, racism existed, sure, but was almost dead. Ironically, with the rise of DEI, BLM, etc, starting I'd say around 2008 or early 2010s, I've never seen so much racism in my life. Turns out the more something is shoved down your throat, the more people grow to resent it.
Older guy too here, I completely agree here, honestly the way people have acted with such groups like BLM and DEI initiatives it comes like civil rights didn't exist until they got behind keyboards themselves and brought it forth to the masses. Honestly it comes off like narcissism
Lol, racism was almost dead. Tell that to the losers saying Michelle Obama used to be a man or comparing Barack Obama to a monkey. As for BLM, your kind reacted the same way to the civil rights movement. "They're too violent!" "They're all Communists!" "We're being replaced!" What's being shoved down your throat is human rights, and you're too chickenshit to admit you hate us for our freedoms. It must suck to be forced to live like your parents did-forever. 🤣🖕🇺🇲
It's primarily because of the implications. Not only is racism not nearly as big of a problem like it used to be, but even if the messages of being against racism are good, they are applied in a way that's meant to virtue signal, specifically they're often using it to paint a nasty picture of conservatives, republicans, Trump supporters, etc. They imply that it's the nature of conservatives to be racist or Nazis, when that's literally not true. It's the idea that conservative, or any form of right-wing politics is automatically synonymous with racism or bigotry. That's the problem with a lot of woke shows these days, they are trying to divide us.
For your next justice league video, can you please do wildcats episode. Not only was it the first episode of the show i saw, and made me fall in love with wildcat. But the entire episode is basically an addiction reference.
14:47 oh hey, look at that. the weird kinda purple guy is walking with the weird kinda orange lady. I guess they gotta stick together. I'm not sure the timeline is as odd as you think, I think Daria was waiting around for a lot longer after Helen and Quinn left, and Jake was just taking forever in the bathroom. THEN finishing, THEN realizing he had no TP, then calling out to everyone for a while, before Daria finally walked by the bathroom.
Chocked, not Chalked, full is based on the idea of stuffing something under another object to prevent it from moving, like putting a wedge under a car tire to stop the tire from rolling.
Me when Shady expresses his true feelings about DEI: “Yep, that’s about the size of it. I’m tired of the only people who have shown interest in the subject in my life being people it doesn’t apply to.”
oh this is a great one. Of all the social awkwardness of this show, this is the perfect example of, as Tom put it, the ridiculous horror. Sports-crazed people feel like they're from another planet. They have ten times the fervor of nerds, but the thing they're looking at is so incredibly dull that they have to get drunk to enjoy it. There physically _is not enough there_ to entertain anyone's brain. but they're as excited as if every touchdown was 20 bucks in their pocket. I too agree parental bribery is no good, but I think this is just the dynamic for rich people. To have any social life at all, you have to have money to go out to eat and stuff. This isn't Doug where a bunch of 11 year olds can ride their bike to fast food and somehow have money. They're essentially getting it for good behavior, even if in practice it is just bribing them to do what they should do anyway. Even worse than paying Daria 'to do the right thing' they often pay her to do things she thinks is wrong.. which is definitely not good, but given that her mom is a lawyer, I think that's how the world works to her. And yeahhh Tad's family is a little inconsistently odd. but in fairness, so are the Lawndales. Politics wasn't nearly so polarized, unified, or... well, mislabeled, as it is now. Like Jake and Helen were hippies, but do they really think anti-communist propaganda is only for _extremists?_ rather than just.. anyone with a head on their shoulders.. The Guptys are extremely PC, anti-TV, anti-sugar... I can see them being anti-police. They're just outwardly super white bread because they're so boring having cut everything fun out of life. I don't think anyone in the 90s cared about race stuff, but the impression I get of Lawndale is that it's a very rich city in a very rednecky state. If you've seen any youtubers from the chicagoland area or the south, or especially the Adult Swim guys from Atlanta, you quickly see they are CONSTANTLY self-conscious about seeming like racists, and massively overcompensate by turning into kinda liberal douches. If you lived somewhere out west or east, nobody cared, but a well-to-do city in the north, middle, or south is gonna be like "everybody be extra nice to the two black kids, or we're in BIG trouble" and then that was the end of it, no further discussion, no conflict.
I know what ya mean bout Tom. His trope is nice for one or two stories. As timeless arctypes are, they work best in multistory arcs when fleshed out. I wished for one episode Tom learned something from Daria.
Because it was an actual legal policy with implications for college and job applications, Affirmative Action was a semi-common talking point in the 90s. But race in general wasn't since the country was trying to move towards a more color blind society. Except California, especially LA, because they've always been horrible. Ironically it was the election of Obama and him jumping on every case of cops shooting a black man that turned race into an every day issue for Americans. Thanks Obama.
PS Since you mentioned banished sitcom characters you should talk about Saved By the Bell at some point. There are so many girls who dated Zack for one episode only to be "never seen or heard from again" (to quote the wiki) that there's a fan conspiracy theory about Mr Bell being a yandere serial killer obsessed with being Zack's friend.

I never saw this show, but I’ve always been curious about it since I’ve heard of it, seems like a show I can really relate to. Your reviews are very thorough.
im not daria exclusive but FUCKING FINALLY
I always saw it as she would do it anyways but she's learned she can make money if they sweat for a second
More Fillmore episodes
I’m just happy to see his content
The jawbreakers
Yup
But did Daria's dad ever get his toilet paper? Or is he stuck on the toilet still?
Some say Jake's spirit haunts that toilet to this day...
I was always in my own world in high school. I never knew when homecoming or certain games or any of that stuff was going on until it was going on. Or after the fact.
I just didn't pay attention to that stuff. So I have no problem believing Daria not knowing it was homecoming day whatever.
4:25 yeah, i remember SO much build up around homecoming.
Are you ever going to review Sam and Max Freelance Police?
With all this jaws music, lots of people inner Mr. Krabs are coming out.
For your next justice league video, can you please do wildcats episode. Not only was it the first episode of the show i saw, and made me fall in love with wildcat. But the entire episode is basically an addiction reference.
The whole float scene was amazingly funny, just hit after hit.
oh wow never been this early. Shady is my fave youtuber right now and I can't wait to see what he says about this.
I hope to see the 2 part finale of JLU one day.
Engagement for my favorite TH-cam nerd. Can’t wait for the next KotH episode.
HES BACK
This was the first episode of Daria I ever saw when I was younger. Strange first impression 😅
Peak
Chocked, not Chalked, full is based on the idea of stuffing something under another object to prevent it from moving, like putting a wedge under a car tire to stop the tire from rolling.
4:05 Daria was in high school in the early 2000s, graduating in 2002.
10:32 No it’s okay I burst out laughing at the exact same time.
Me when Shady expresses his true feelings about DEI:
“Yep, that’s about the size of it. I’m tired of the only people who have shown interest in the subject in my life being people it doesn’t apply to.”
'Theyre against DEI'
Yeah, so am I. If it's proven. He's an athlete. She's a very intelligent student. I think it's merit here.
Shady be pumping video out
Requesting you talk about 'Generator Rex' post number 3. I will not stop until my demands are met!
I can’t remember seeing this episode. But it has been awhile watching all the episodes on Paramount.
oh this is a great one.
While it is true that nothing beat king if the hill, Daria is a damn close second
Am still waiting on more DuckTales review
I have never watched Daria, but i watch because of your humor. I do watch justice league and king of the hill though
all your uh ohs made me laugh very loudly
I love everything shady lyrics episode
Any chance we can get a video on the Cadmus arc of JLU? It's a well woven arc.
