jerrys opening spring remarks, "you won't believe how good shenton is at 3rd, and he rakes." "Bliss is the next julio cruz at 2b very excited we could open up playing time for these 2"
The tough hitting in t mobile says even more about our hitters that do well. Julio/ Cal are fantastic hitters still crushing it in the leagues toughest park
I saw 2 Club level seats for sale at Costco for $60, normally I would’ve called some friends and got a group to go, but I refuse to give this team a penny. I will not financially support this team until things change, I will continue to root and watch on torrents (not Root). I spent a few hundred bucks on tickets last year, but not this year. We are in our window to win with our staff and there is no urgency. Money over wins should be the team motto this year.
Prevailing winds just means consistently coming from one direction. So in Seattle during the summer our winds consistently blow in from left field or north northwest. A place like Chicago might be lower on the prevailing winds list because sometimes it blows from right to left and other times left to right field. An interesting note on winds and the planning of Safeco Field is that when the engineers looked at wind patterns for the location they looked at complete annual prevailing winds, which during the winter come more from the south or towards the out field. They should have looked at wind patterns from April to October. If they had done that then the stadium would have a far different orientation.
why is the batter’s eye crooked in the first place? at the Peoria Sports Complex for spring training the batters eye is perfectly perpendicular to the battters line of sight. why is it so weird at Safeco? seems silly
Have we considered this? Maybe the Mariners pitching staff just really isn't that good - it's literally just the ballpark. And therefore, the Mariners really aren't that good at developing pitchers, because any average/above average pitcher is excellent at T-Mobile. Besides Bryan Woo, maybe it's all just an illusion. And let's go a little deeper and more depressing. Maybe the Mariners actually completely knew and embraced this all along (secretly, of course), and this narrative of "we develop pitchers better than anyone" is just a bogus spin to make the franchise seem more legit.
Hey guys I love the podcast. Just wanted to share that my 73 year old grandpa just passed away due to surgery complications. He was a Mariners fan through all of the ups and mostly downs. I just wish the ownership cared enough to actually try to get these people a World Series. But now some of them are dead.
Knowing the park that you have, you should get the players suited for the park. Player who are good defenders, athletic and puts the ball in play, are the types that you need for T-Mobile. Don’t forget that T-Mobile park was tailored made for Junior (LH bat) when he was on the team. You will need a LH batter like Othani to make a difference in T-Mobile. If not, get hit and run players who can play small ball. 3B Yoan Moncada is switch hitter with an above average OPS+. 2B Luis Garcia JR is LH hitter who can be had in a trade and the Nationals need pitching. Luis Castillo would fit the bill for the Nats. DH can be improved with JD Martinez, though he is RH bat. Getting these 3 players would offset Bregman.
I would be okay with taking a flyer on Spencer Torkelson just because he’s a much cheaper option than most of what’s out there and we wouldn’t have to give up our one of our starting pitchers or a top level prospect to acquire him. Sign him to platoon @ 1st, make another modest trade to bring in Willi Castro to help out in the infield. Lastly I would like to see them sign Ha-Seong Kim. None of these players would cost an over the top insane amount of capital or money but bringing each of them over would vastly improve our opening day roster.
We’d be all in on Tork! And yeah, absolutely Ha-Seong Kim too. Kim’s probably gonna miss the first month to six weeks or so of the regular season, but regardless we’d be all for that. He absolutely makes the team better
Because Kim would be missing the start of the season I would imagine that would realistically bring his price down a bit which of course then makes him that much more obtainable. These are relatively small moves, nothing super flashy but very achievable given the financial restrictions that ownership has placed on the team. If we acquired these two or three players for a modest price it would be a world of difference from where this roster stands today, right now. The best part of getting guys like these is we wouldn’t have to give up any of our starting arms to do so…
So what you’re telling me is the Mariners are the definition of insanity. Repeatedly performing an action without changing your approach, while hoping for a different outcome
They say the approach will be different this year with Edgar, and felt that the approach was different in the final 5 weeks. But yeah, 5 weeks is a little tough to fully buy in on right now. Think everyone will have to see it to believe it
This is crazy. The only way i can rationalize it is that Jerry thinks he’s playing 4D chess and thinks some big trade oppurtunities will be revealed during the season. He might be banking on a team becoming desperate for Castillo or another starter
This is why teams dont want to trade major pieces for Castillo and maybe the lesser two starters from Seattle. The best offer you got was from Boston. Most teams think of Castillo as a salary dump, not a top line pitcher and have treated him as such. His home/road splits are crazy. Outside of a couple of oddities he only pitched well against the lesser teams and really only the Angels, Rockies and Twins and Oakland though the new place they play might change that. You will only get a decent player(Ryan McMahon type) and a lesser prospect at best. And after this year the returns will only lessen. Maybe at the deadline you can fleece a good player from a desperate team but the Mariners will have to eat some of that contract. And probably be selling off because of a non competitive year anyway.
I know TJ mentioned it in an earlier episode, but his take on “fit” being impacted by the “price” of a player is so fucking solid. I feel exactly the same. In other words, (in a fictional universe) if you could get Casas for say, Trent Thortan straight up, I imagine the Mariners would find a “fit” for Casas.
Just to preface, this is a take that is not very well thought out, but couldn't they just build upon the batters eye to make it taller and then black out the upper level seats behind it? Also, I think Torkleson would be a great fit. He could play 1b everyday while Raley plays DH/4th OF. I just dont know if the Tigers will give him up.
Don’t think that’s the issue with the batters eye, being the height. Cleveland and Baltimore have similar batters eyes and it doesn’t seem to be an issue there. But yeah, we’d absolutely be interested in trading for Tork!
I don't believe the F.O. believes the last 5 weeks are indicative of who this team is......I believe the ownership group does. I think the F.O. is 'hoping' the last 5 weeks is what this lineup will do. But if thats the case....take Septembers numbers and add another couple of bats and go get a WS. Instead....they saw an opportunity to be cheap and have something to hang their collective hats on.
Would love to see the Ms get Torkelson. He’s cheap, he’s got power so much that he may be able to overcome T-Mobile, and DET doesn’t have space for him (even without Bregman). Why isn’t he talked about more?
The trees were a problem cause they kept dying. Not because the hitters complaining. One thing that isn’t talked about that I’d like to see research is the big screen. Not necessarily correlation but since they upgraded it K’s have gone up substantially
Morning fellas! So you’re telling me the only thing we need to do to be good and hit to T-Mobile park, is signed generational bats that are cheap and easily controllable that our owner will pay for. World Series incoming
The Seattle stadium is going to artificially look worse for hitters this year due to all Visitors facing our all-star rotation and closer, and us being really bad hitters.
I want to remind these guys every time you say " you know ball " then say you will be optimistic about the moves the Seattle Mariners make and prove the lack of knowledge you have
@@MarineLayerPod yeah, I don’t think money and spending is a cure all but imagine getting 4 Pete Alonso type players and having your payroll the same as the rangers… would be an AL favorite.
Mariners played 23 years in the Kingdome, one of the most hitter friendly places in that era, and played in 3 playoff series. The Mariners have played at T mobile roughly 25 years and played in 5 playoff series (6 including the wc series against the Jays but no games were played at home). The problem is not the park at all. Good players equals good teams. A dome WILL NOT solve the issue, it will just make losing even more unenjoyable!
I just can't get excited about the possibility of Nico becoming a Mariner. A light hitting second baseman that would be even lighter hitting at T-Mobile. Might as well just try to bring Polanco back. And if you value Nico for his defense you might as well have just kept Rojas as a much cheaper option.
We were a little worried about that idea at first, but he’s a better hitter than he often gets credit for! He just doesn’t hit a bunch of bombs. And he plays defense and runs the bases as well as any second baseman in the game. He’s usually a 3.5 to 4 WAR player, which would be massive for this team. And far and away the best second baseman this team has had since Robinson Cano
@MarineLayerPod I guess my question would be, what would be more valuable to the M's, a 3.5 to 4 WAR player who mainly does it with his bat, or one that mainly does it through good defense and base running? Or does it not really matter, WAR is WAR?
No, it’s very real. The players themselves absolutely still need to hit better. But the park effect is extremely real. You should go read the full article when you get the chance. It highlights some fascinating things
@ that’s a strange way to be dismissive of the simple fact that the ballpark clearly made no difference that year. If you can point to a single year where the ballpark didn’t matter, then it’s not a factor for ANY of the years. The simple fact is that the Mariners have an awful offense, and they have for many many years, and blaming the building they play in is stupid, and making that a PUBLIC excuse only serves to theoretically fuel ownership’s poor decisions, and gives hitters yet another reason to not sign there. There is zero benefit to any of this.
@DaveH8905 Have you read the article? Very little of it is opinion, instead it's filled with cold hard facts and data proving well beyond reasonable doubt that yes, T-Mobile is an extreme pitcher's park that suppresses offense to a very significant degree.

When the roof is closed, does that help with the issues of the sun and wind?
Not according to what petriello found. No difference
Need the mariners to make a move TODAY! I'm running out of baseball content from content creators I enjoy!
That sounds like a plan to us!
Julio and Cal can hit HR's Garver and Haniger can as well but last seasons slump was awful to the mitches....
