Great video! I'll get to fishing mine sometime soon - the early spring kind of flew by! The one thing I'm uncertain about that nobody seems to really address with these pre-rigged treble models is depth. Many talk about mid depths like 6 to 12 feet but these bait, although heavy, may not sink like a log, allowing you to get down and stay down in these deeper depths. Some presenters of videos on the "pre-rigged treble" lead one to believe its most productive season would be pre-spawn, spawn and post-spawn, but mainly to the extent those fish are in the shallows, suitable to spawning, call it a foot out to maybe 4 or 5 feet. I've not seen anyone use a worm weight to achieve a deeper presentation, and wonder if that would mess with the way the body moves, or perhaps rolls to a side as so many have sworn by that you need to fish the pre-rig very slowly to keep it running right. I know that the Freestyle model can pickup where the pre-rig leaves off, but I'm asking your thought on depth presentation with the pre-rig (and not 20 feet, but say that 8 out to maybe 15 feet).
Those lures should be great in Florida for snook and other saltwater fish. In brackish water you could catch a snook or bass or tarpon or peacock bass in the same spot. I like versatile lures like that. It should catch cobia and mahi mahi offshore too. Cool.
Mid East coast they are also good for mix species fishing. Striped bass/Wipers, Muskie, Probably pike firther north. I can also DEFINITELY see a predatory brown trout slamming one, or a big tailwater walleye (I have walleye trolling crankbaits a very similar size and a similar wobble. Probably need a model equipped with a stinger) Hell I've caught big crappie on a ~4" underspin. Catfish will also nail one. A 6" meal is not that crazy.
You catch bigger fish on average with these swimbaits, but you'd be surprised how many smaller fish you catch. The really aggressive ones don't know the size of their own mouths or bellies. I've caught bass well under a pound on big 8" swimbaits. I even caught a green sunfish on a 6" bluegill jointed swimbait...the lure was half as big as the sunfish. Green sunfish are notoriously aggressive with short memories, but still.... Just bought a magdraft. I'm excited to see how it works. I've got a small county lake I want to try it on. It's a great lake and I usually pull 6-10 bass every trip with half of them being between 3 and 4 lbs. But I've only caught a couple in that 5 lb range. All of the fish are well fed with bellies because the bait fish population is great and they have a lot of cover. But for some reason the bigger fish I've had trouble getting them to commit. I see some 6+ lb fish follow, but they never commit. I've heard good things about this bait, so hoping it can be the bait that finally gets them to commit. Last year a guy caught a 9 lb bass in the lake(9 lbs in Kansas is HUGE) so I know they'll commit if you give them the right presentation.
If your catching fish on the Magdraft awesome, but i was i throwing it on a faster speed reel too and learned i was using it wrong. It was meant for a 5 speed reel with a slow medium retrieve. I ended up getting a 5 speed Tranx years ago and the tail wage and headroll of that Magdraft was ridiculous and my bites and size of fish went up dramatically.
I may make a few modifications to allow it to be fished on a faster reel. I do disagree though. Once you get to the 8, then I would go slower. However, for the 6 I like a 6:3 or a 7:2. That's just personal preference though. That's the fun part of this game, there is no right or wrong.
hey i ordered a few magdraft swimbaits off of tackle warehouse and they didnt come with any hardware which i was unaware of but also if you go to the treble hooks so what do you have to hook the trebles on
You ordered magdraft freestyle you supposed to rig them with a big jighead or a big Weedless hook the Magdraft he’s showing in the video is the rigged version
@@ethanplays1658 yea I figured that out after I checked my prder and stuff so yea but thank you anyway also I got the big weighted beast hooks sooo we chillin
I use the 5in & 6in in saltwater to catch monster Trout, Snook & Redfish. I convert the 5in into a Freestyle like the 6in that's on the market. My gear of choice is a Shimano Scorpion dc with a JDM Scorpion 2pcs rod 7 ft5 MH works absolutely perfect in saltwater.
Definitely don't need special or expensive gear for the 6". Just a rod rated for a 1-1/2oz lure and a decent reel. And bass a whole lot smaller than 2 pounds will try to eat it, too.
I have never been able to get a magdraft to run correctly at that high a gear ratio. I use a Cardiff 301A 5.8:1 for the 8 inch and even it feels a shade too fast. I have to really pay attention and be deliberate about my retrieve. For the 5-6 inch models, I generally step it down to a 6 from my regular 7.
I just put a 5.4:1 on an 8' rod. 4 lb. flourocarbon up 1/4" from spool. Incredibly slow. Yea if you use a BFS full they are fast. Pull your line fill way down, it will crank slow. Or use that real thin line.
Hey is it normal for them to fall apart after one fish? first time out with it i caught a 4 with it and the magdraft was destroyed. Don't get me wrong i love the action and caught a nice one with it, but to spend $15 on a something that gets destroyed by one fish is annoying.
Take nail weights and put 1 in front of the hook hanger and one behind the hook perpendicular to the bait. This will help keep the bait from rolling over
@@JD_Fishing yea man I did not find that out till they came in the mail but I looked on tactical bassin and they use beast hooks so I got 8/0 beast hooks for it but I love your Chanel it has been very helpful keep up the good work man you will always have a viewer here
I had a 5lber eat a 12 inch bass i had on my hook head first and swim off. I then hooked the 5. So i don't think 6 inches is a big bait. I've seen bass nail huge snakes.
Wow, one would think, if one was going to do an entire video on Magdrafts, one would know what size Magdraft he is talking about !....5inch ? WTF ? yeah, thats when I shut it off !
Informative video. Thanks for sharing! Just picked up my first 2 magdrafts and am hoping to crush it tomorrow on Cayuga 👍🏽

Hey man! Great video. How do you have all those baits on wall? U stock or promotions? Jus curious how to get all that great stuff
Thanks for the tips, and congrats on your top 15 placement in the classic!
Appreciate it!
Thanks for your valuable time and information 👍

nice man. the freestyle ones are good too for slow rollin bottom
I do like the freestyle! Around docks can be super awesome or crawling on the bottom
If you can throw a 5 inch senko....you can throw a 5 inch swimbait. End of story
So your telling me i should start throwing a 10 inch senko
@@idontstunt2613 whoa....super clever reply.

Two completely different animals.

You should check out the new z man mulletron! My buddy has been hammering snook and tarpon on it lately
@@JD_Fishing I sure will. 👍
Dude I’d be scared to throw it in salt water. A damn lizard fish. Would chop the tail off on my first cast my luck.. 😂

Right! it was crazy when I figured out how small of fish would eat that bait!
6th Sense has some great swimbaits. The Draw and Trace are awesome.
I agree!
Yeah I need to get some of these already.
Yeah you do! they catch the fire out of them man
I prefer the freestyle with a 3/8 oz. underspin and a 5/0 hook. You can throw it anywhere.
Oh that way that thing can go in and out of literally anything
you said you piar it on med heavy fast action. But the rod you showed us was a Heavy Fast? Just curious is all.
Yeah it was just what I had sitting next to me haha my bad
@@JD_Fishing lol!! its ok!!! Just making sure. Im gonna build me a rod just for the magdraft and softbaits that size. I trust your judgement.
Is it windy inside your studio?

What color magdraft is your favorite for Champlain? perch?
I still like white when its windy and then the clear blue back one. Those fish are starting to eat more baitfish
@@JD_Fishing do you ever like to use the perch color?
Love the magdraft.
It’s such a fun bait to fish!
I wish someone told me to wait for the superior daingerous swimbait
Superior? It’s a carbon copy of the magdraft 🤦🏾♂️
Those hooks are fine out the package too😂
They're not bad but they bend out easier and dont have a big enough gap for my taste
@@JD_Fishing understandable 👌🏾
5 pounder will hit anything I've gotten bit on my manifold Deniro 550 twice. Both times it was a 5 pounder which is the same size as my bait.
Bass have bigger stomachs then they do mouths 😂😂
I also got a new great worm idea. Not on market I think!!!
How about a tip for not having the things roll over or “swim” on its side?
Take nail weights and put 1 in front of the hook hanger and one behind the hook perpendicular to the bait. This will help keep the bait from rolling over
I throw mag Drafts all the time..... here in Michigan .
They SMOKE them over in your neck of the woods!
nevermind it seems i got mine off the wrong website the come with hardware on fish usa but not on tackle warehouse
It’s all good, they make a free style and a ln original. The freestyle has no treble and the original does

I’ll throw this bait down into the 40s! It’s a super productive prespawn bait. One of my first go-tos
caught one 1.5 pound bass on a brand new magdraft and the magnet came off and was gone... waste of money
6 and 10 inch
Thanks lol
I throw my magdraft on 20 lb spider wire braid
Ever been compared to Jeff Anderson?
You said 7'6 mh but showed a heavy rod...
Is this a secret? Please
