Glad to see you’re only human. It’s not just me that gets splashed with oil and orders wrong parts😂. Makes your videos much more real and not staged. Keep up the good work!

First cambelt change for me was on a 1987 1.3 Nissan Sunny on the driveway. I was so nervous but it was actually a really easy job. The feeling of relief when it started up on the button was bliss.😅

Always the way, despite aiming for the bowl, it still splashes everywhere around it... :P

It's funny how changing a cambelt is such an awesome challenge for amateur mechanics. Haven't done one yet (I have a T4), but retirement means I'm going to have to do a lot more work myself.

7:50 Did the same with my Mazda, not my fault they sent me a 23 teeth belt, instead of a 25 teeth belt! It meant I had to miss my first classic car show... It was sorted on the following Monday!

I only ever changed a timing belt on a mk 6 Escort successfully, great feeling 😊.

That's why everyone should write down the date/mileage of the cambelt change, oil change etc so the next guy can get a head's up.

I've done so much of those XU's during 25 years time including the T16 ! (from an 405) , very good robust engines , bit 'heavy' on fuel but otherwise bullet proof . That engine is 1.9 , at least the block is , strenghtening spacer plate between the block and sump is a giveaway . But theres few variants of 1.9 8v engines 105/122/130hp , if it's complete standard aka not an hybrid built engine . Cambelt often confuses on these , engines with spring loaded tensioner (like yours) use 113 tooth belt . Seems like it was overfueling , common fault on these is CTS sensor (blue Bosch sensor) , cheap and easy to replace if it hasnt been done for long time i highly reccomend replacing it . Also mixed up engine management parts/sensors can make it run bad and overfuel too , as well as tampering with the air flow meter spring tension .

My first cam belt replacement was also a vw scirocco 2. A lot of "firsts" happened in my scirocco.

My guess you ordered the concentric tensioner and belt was a 114 teeth, early gti XU engine 113 teeth

I would be changing those front struts and springs for sure!

When I was in training in the RAF in the 80s , some trainees on their last day picked up and put an officers Visa GTI in a skip. They didn't damage it and it was a beautiful white car brand new. Just shows they aren't that heavy if you've got enough guys.

I worked with my dad from probably 8 years old on old cars and even when in my 20s he would still look over my shoulder and silently check my work 😂, reassuringly irritating 😁, but yeah good memories Seppo

1st Cambelt for me was an '84 1.6 Ford Sierra. And the similar to yourself. My dad was overseeing the job and guiding me through. But understand the anxiety and "oh crap, hope I've done it right" moment when done and on start up. lol!
Worst one I've done has been a twin cam K series on a MGZR 1.4. Didn't have the correct tool to stop the intake cam from slightly turning when the belt was off.. Some Industrial language was used.. 🤣🤣

What lift do you have? I'm very tempted to get one. I'm too old for lying on the floor under cars.

Frustrating if you have the wrong parts. Is it a French thing? Because I almost never have that issue with my Volvo C70.

A gigantic pox on every engine maker who use these damn cam *belts* as opposed to chains. The only benefit the belts have are a purely economic one for the engine builder as there is no tangible benefit for the car owner after purchase. Chains (normally) don't require regular replacement unlike these shitful belts that do.
In an interference engine, the use of belts is even more shamefully negligent.
Hate these things with a passion as I do NOT like faffing around changing things that should not even be necessary.
