Crosby Stills & Nash - Southern Cross (Remastered/lyrics in Description)

  • Origin (per wikipedia): Southern Cross is based on the song "Seven League Boots" by Rick and Michael Curtis. Stills explained, "The Curtis Brothers brought a wonderful song called 'Seven League Boots,' but it drifted around too much. I rewrote a new set of words and added a different chorus, a story about a long boat trip I took after my divorce (his first wife, singer-songwriter Véronique Sanson). It's about using the power of the universe to heal your wounds. Once again, I was given somebody's gem and cut and polished it."
    Lyrics:
Got out of town on a boat
    Goin' to Southern islands.
    Sailing a reach
    Before a followin' sea.
She was makin' for the trades
    On the outside,
    And the downhill run
    To Papeete.
Off the wind on this heading
    Lie the Marquesas.
We got eighty feet of the waterline.
    Nicely making way.
In a noisy bar in Avalon
    I tried to call you.
But on a midnight watch I realized
    Why twice you ran away.
    Chorus
    Think about how many times
    I have fallen
    Spirits are using me
    larger voices callin'.
What heaven brought you and me
    Cannot be forgotten.
I have been around the world,
    Lookin' for that woman/girl,
    Who knows love can endure.
    And you know it will.
    And you know it will.
When you see the Southern Cross
    For the first time
    You understand now
    Why you came this way
'Cause the truth you might be runnin' from
    Is so small.
But it's as big as the promise
The promise of a comin' day.
    So I'm sailing for tomorrow
    My dreams are a dyin'.
And my love is an anchor tied to you
    Tied with a silver chain.
    I have my ship
And all her flags are a flyin'
She is all that I have left
    And music is her name.
    Chorus
    Think about how many times
    I have fallen
    Spirits are using me
    larger voices callin'.
What heaven brought you and me
    Cannot be forgotten.
I have been around the world,
    Lookin' for that woman/girl,
    Who knows love can endure.
    And you know it will.
    And you know it will.
So we cheated and we lied
    And we tested
And we never failed to fail
It was the easiest thing to do.
    You will survive being bested.
    Somebody fine
    Will come along
Make me forget about loving you.
    At the Southern Cross.

I loved my first wife dearly, we had a year together, got married in a beautiful wedding in September. Everything was so great until one day, three days before Christmas, we learned she had bone cancer. At first, we pretended she was "normal" because the cancer was at it's fourth stage, but as she wasted away before my eyes and her pain grew so great, we just couldn't pretend anymore. We both loved CSNY, and played the album constantly. Then, one day in the Spring, she died in my arms while waiting for the ambulance to come. I felt her go limp, and she was gone. Even though I married twice more, I always thought of her inside my thoughts as my only one. I hear any CSN or CSNY song, and it reminds me of her. I will love her forever.

I used to fly maritime patrol missions in US Navy P-3 "Orions" and one night I walked up to the cockpit of this 11-man airliner-sized four engine aircraft, and as I stepped into this small control room, all the lights were turned off at once, absolute darkness inside the aircraft. For once, it wasn't an emergency - the pilots had selected all the lights onboard to be switched off. The effect was ... overwhelming. Outside the windows at 32,000 feet, the unpolluted, unlit Indian Ocean sky was an upside-down bowl of stars extending from horizon to horizon. Similar to being in a planetarium, it extended 120 degrees across the star-filled heavens, with every one visible. Constellations jumped out on all sides - years of navigation training gave me a name for every cluster. Realizing that, I knew where to look for the Southern Cross - up towards Iran as the crow flies from where we were patrolling. The Southern Cross was hanging low in the sky and I watched it out the window for a long time. I'd seen it before, but not like that. I went back to sleep the last couple hours until dawn among the parachutes and kit bags, found this song on my Aiwa cassette headset, and drifted off to sleep.

The only thing I could think of that would have been better is if you were able to listen to the song while you were actually looking at the constellation. You did have a really good view. I think it probably would be best though on a boat out in the ocean at night with a clear sky and the music going, but yours was a keeper also.

My dad loved vinyl. I thought his record collection was the coolest thing when I was kid. Every Friday night he would play his favorite songs and we would dance together. We both loved this song. He's gone now and his record collection belongs to me. I will never tire of this beautiful song.
In 2019 I traveled to New Zealand alone. I will always remember the first time I saw the Southern Cross. It was early winter on a cold and windy beach. I thought of my dad and all those years ago when we would dance like wild people every Friday night. Love you dad ❤

I remember thinking of this song the first time I saw the Southern Cross. I was flying a night sortie off the USS Kitty Hawk on my first cruise. We were in the Southern Pacific heading for the Persian Gulf in 1992. It was a dark night hundreds of miles from any land. Looking straight up through the canopy, at 40,000 feet the stars were so bright it felt like you could reach out and touch them. It was magnificent!

When the economy tanked I lost my home and when I went to North Dakota to drive tanker in the oil field most of my belongings were stolen from storage. I bought a sloop with some of the money I saved and I have learned how to sail. I never understood the meaning of the words until now and it inspires me. Now literally everything I own is on my boat with the largest American flag I can fly off of my mast. For the first time in my life I have found peace.

This song came out when I was a freshman in college, and I fell in love with it right away. I’ve been singing it all my life since. It’s so full of longing, sorrow, and hope all at once. Now I cry as I sing it, as it’s tied to my son who died at 20, and my dad who’s still with us, a sailor. I know his time left is short, but I’m grateful for all the years.

I've never heard nostalgia described that way. It really hit home to me, and yes, music does help. It's so bittersweet and almost hurts in a strange way. I grew up in the 80's , and for me , it was the best time of my life, and I didn't even know it. If only.... I've heard the phrase, that youth is wasted on the young, and it's now starting to make sense to me.

I hear in now and it brings tears to my eyes. 20 years in the USN will sure show you the world but the cost is great. I’m sure my wife, now together 54 years had the more difficult time than I. The night sky in the middle of and ocean is like nothing you will ever see inland. It will burn into your brain and call to you for the rest of your life.

Nobody writes music like this anymore. I am thankful everyday that I grew up during an era (60s-70s) when pop-rock music along with American Jazz were the greatest art forms on earth. I like to hope that we didn't take it for granted, at least I don't think we did. I do remember that we thoroughly enjoyed the music being made for us. The Beatles, CSN(y), Chicago, Fleetwood Mac, The Who, America, Bread. Too many to name really. I look at the music scene today and it only serves to remind me of how very, very lucky we really were.

I was born in the early 70’s. My parents made sure we listened to the music of the 50’s, 60’s and early 70’s. The music has given me a much larger appreciation towards almost everything. My wife and I continued the trend by making sure our kids listened to and understood the music from the 50’s til now. Funny enough, we can ask them, when in the car “who is it and what song” and 90%+ of the time they can rattle it off.

In 1983 I was performing with my band, Spankie in the Frenchman’s Reef Hotel in St. Thomas. There were four of us, each of us had been the lead singer in four different bands. Naturally, with four strong singers we performed many CSN songs. I remember our last night performing there. It was a magical place and a magical time and I felt so blessed to be performing with such talented musicians. Singing this song for the last time in beautiful St. Thomas was particularly difficult. With tears streaming down my face and trying so hard not to have it effect my voice, and feeling the warm breeze blowing through the open windows of the club, we bid a heartfelt farewell to our friends and the beautiful experience of living there. It’s still brings tears to my eyes to hear this song all these years later. Thank you CSN For your brilliant, poetic music.

This may be the first video on here where all the comments I've read are just so...human. No arguments, no anonymous name-calling, just real life in its glory and sadness. Prayers and peace to those who've lost a loved one or are in that slow process with an aging parent. The power of music is infinite and it truly unites the world as I sit here land-locked in Texas and read posts from the southern hemisphere and dream of seeing this beautiful constellation some day for myself. Great song from a great band, and whoever said they don't make this music anymore is right. We will always have it, though and if there's a heaven above or a better place I bet it has a soundtrack and I bet CSN are on it.

"...the promise of a coming day..."
That line brings me near tears everytime.
My fiancée was killed by a drunk driver in 1995. We loved this song, & daydreamed about buying a boat & sailing away.
Everytime I hear this song, or watch the movie "Joe vs the Volcano", I think of her & that boat.
Now I'm 50, half-crippled (same wreck) & never found another like her. I'm waiting it out, without a clue what I should do next.
But everytime I hear this song, I am both happy & sad....
    ....what might have been.

Beam Me UP: UP is the key word. Find something you love to do that makes you happy(er), and do it as hard as you can. I, too, lost my wife in a car wreck. For 8 years I cried for the children I'd never have, that we'd *tried* to have. Doctors all said there was nothing wrong with us, but the Lord would have it so.
6 yrs later, hearing His voice, I walked away from an aviation career that I'd fought and scratched to obtain. For 2 yrs I rocked along at various odd jobs. Then...at a square dance, doing what I enjoyed doing, I met this girl, 29 yrs old, 11 years my junior, so lovely that I got dizzy just lookin' at her. She'd just moved out of her parents' house, had never been on a date (parents, eh). Because " the Lord would have it so," she accepted my attentions, we married, and now in my old age I have 5 kids still at home.
I don't know your situation, Beam (or yours, gentle reader), but I do know that sitting at home, waiting to die, isn't how you find another life. Everything I have today came from the Lord. Seek and ye shall find, knock and it shall be opened, ask and it shall be delivered to you, filling your lap, running over for bounty. Get up, go out, do something -- go UP!

In eighth grade me and my friend Jim started a band. Me on drums and Jim on...well, everything else. It was strange how he could pick up a bass guitar or a saxophone and just figure out how to make the right sounds. On the keyboards Jim played Elton John songs (I would say an effortless and exacting Elton sound while playing the piano while also having a conversation with me...and not missing a note). Anyway, I knew he was adopted, but the cool thing was, a few years later he found out David Crosby was his Dad! Jim now tours with his Dad in a band called CPR. Look it up! I always said to Jim that, "He'd make it." Jim was just so good on any instrument. That was in 1976 that we first started our band.

My wife was an understanding soul, though, and we grew to love it. One of the most played records on it was "Southern Cross." When the song comes on the radio now (not often enough, I might add), we still call it the "jukebox song."

Like so many here, this song takes me back to a lost love. In the mid 80s we used to sail regularly. My love used to dance on the top of the cabin, up near the mast and she would act out the song as it played.
Instead of sunscreen, she always wore a long white shirt over her swimsuit. The shirt was made from a very light fabric.
I recall one time the wind was just right to blow that shirt to make it look like she could fly, like a bird on the wind. She danced to this song and put her arms out allowing the shirt to blow back. It's hard to describe but she almost became one with the elements.
Unfortunately she was killed in a car accident in 1988. This song always takes me back to that magical dance on top of the cabin. Rest In Peace my love, Rest In Peace.

Hey - Thanks for watching and especially thank you for your comments.
I put this video together to please myself. I am gratified and have been very pleasantly surprised to see so many who have watched it have also found something pleasurable in it as well.
I wanted to say here that I find everything about this recording emotionally and spiritually uplifting as well as deeply touching. I believe that the voices, instruments, lyric and performance have been bound together in an extraordinary fashion.
In the same way as those who have commented here, the song gives me chills, too. It gives me goosebumps, too. If I allow it, it brings me to tears, too. This is a song from my days as a teen. Regardless of any nostalgia that I may feel for it, it is primarily the music itself to which I respond.
I also wanted to say something here about my choice of images. Some who have commented here appear to have been perplexed by my use (or overuse) of dolphin imagery. My reason for the use of the dolphin images is this:
Dolphins are as tied to the mystery, grace and joy of open water as we are. They have been our sailing companions for centuries. They are undeniably beautiful. And they belong. A picture of a ship at sea is simply a picture of a ship at sea. Static and often without apparent purpose, despite any artistic attributes it may have The most emotionally charged images of ships at sea are often of ships in danger or in combat. A picture of a dolphin at sea is a picture of uncompromised life, spirit, joy, movement, and freedom. To me, this song, if about nothing else, is a song about life.
I hope this answers any questions you might have about this video. I will happily answer any others as they arise.
Peace, love, and good health to you!
    tdalaska (terry davidson)

Got out of town on a boat goin' to Southern Islands
Sailing a reach before a followin' sea
She was makin' for the trades on the outside
And the downhill run to Papeete
Off the wind on this heading lie the Marquesas
We got eighty feet of the waterline nicely making way
In a noisy bar in Avalon I tried to call you
But on a midnight watch I realized why twice you ran away
    Think about
Think about how many times I have fallen
Spirits are using me, larger voices callin'
What Heaven brought you and me cannot be forgotten
Around the world (I have been around the world)
Lookin' (lookin' for that woman girl)
Who knows she knows (who knows love can endure)
    And you know it will
When you see the Southern Cross for the first time
You understand now why you came this way
'Cause the truth you might be runnin' from is so small
But it's as big as the promise, the promise of a comin' day
So I'm sailing for tomorrow my dreams are a-dyin'
And my love is an anchor tied to you (tied with a silver chain)
I have my ship and all her flags are a-flyin'
She is all that I have left and music is her name
    Think about
Think about how many times I have fallen
Spirits are using me, larger voices callin'
What Heaven brought you and me cannot be forgotten
I have been around the world (I have been around the world)
Lookin' (lookin' for that woman girl)
    (Who knows love can endure)
    And you know it will
    And you know it will
So we cheated and we lied and we tested
And we never failed to fail it was the easiest thing to do
    You will survive being bested
Somebody fine will come along make me forget about loving you
    And the southern cross

Hi Delphic Oracle you nailed it. Stephen Stills was the tuning fork for CSN and Young -- those harmonies would never have happened without him. Also, like Tom Petty his voice was made to convey meaning, not just be pretty. Everyone got sober but him; watched a documentary a few months back where they all gang up on him silly wankers who made beautiful music … all he did was drink, didn't need a liver transplant etc. It's easy to send up this music but this song … pure gold. Has to be up there with my top ten. Best wishes for the new year!
