Tears of Teesta - Warnings Taken for Granted?

  • On October 4, 2023, Sikkim faced another harrowing catastrophe. The state which could not forget the aftermath of the 2011 earthquake, is now grappling with devastating floods of the Mighty Teesta River. The aftermath, as captured on social media, reveals the extent of the damage: lost lives, hundreds missing, obliterated properties, and vanished roads and bridges. This chilling scene raises questions: Was there any forewarning of this tragedy? Why did this happen? Could the response have been more effective? Were we truly caught off-guard? Join us on The Cord’s latest video to delve deeper.

I am from Gangtok and it’s extremely heartbreaking to see my people suffering at this time, we even don’t know how many people are buried under the sand and debris, which is around 20 ft tall, buildings are submerged, and it’s impossible to clear the debris. Everyday dead bodies are being dug out. We had already suffered severely in 2011 earthquake and now the flash flood.
Your research, facts and reporting is commendable.
Another fact is that the people from north Sikkim had protested the hydel project extensively, they sat on hunger strike for more than 3 months, supported by the entire people of Sikkim, many parts of the country and even internationally, however the projects were developed in north Sikkim.

I'm Suraj Subba from Sikkim. With all the available scientific study data about the disaster that had to occur somehow recently in our State, my question is why did the concerned authorities and the government neglect it? We all know that our Himalayan region is vulnerable to so many natural disasters in future. Now we need to formulate a strategy for the people living along all the major river basins. It may not be today but in the future, those glacial lakes in the upper region will eventually cause a similar disaster which we cannot prevent. We could have saved those precious lost lives if we had at least tried harder to work on the scientific findings seriously. Just an installation of an early warning system (EWS) would have done a great job.

This was already a phase under process or so I gather from the accounts of the team that was up there hardly 2 weeks before the unfortunate event took place. I am, myself, as sceptical about the administration as you but watching the narration of the locals made me realise how mock drills were being conducted in the concerned areas (though nobody in the lower lying regions spoke of any mock drills done there). Somehow these awareness programs also seemed to have saved a lot of lives especially up North. There is so much more of a lesson to be learnt here though. Policies need to be reframed. More than anything else citizens themselves should be more aware of government decisions and policies and the impact those decisions can bring in the near future. We need more aware citizens.

There are almost more than 500 glacial lakes in Bhutan and Bhutan also have faced GLOB in past but as of now we are doing our best to mitigate those disaster by implementing new methods, such as artificially lowering the level of lakes and also strictly prohibiting citizens from building house near rivers and streams just naming few of many.. If few of those mitigations are followed strictly, i believe we can reduce damage to life and property to some extend. , My condolence to all the innocent lives lost and affected.

A lot of factors contributed to the flash flood. The previous day there was a small earthquake in Nepal, heavy rains (not cloudburst) and global warming (which causes glacier melt). There are many glacier lakes like that in Sikkim. The danger of flash floods was imminent and impending. My heart bleeds for the people affected. Also, please pronounce the river Teesta as "Tea" sta.

True it wasn't due to cloud burst it was due to global warming which caused the melting of glaciers
