The "You should have left a light on" refers to her cruel mother, who locked Sinéad out of the house and made her sleep in the garden shed. Sinéad used to call up to her mother begging her to let her in, or at least leave the light on. But the cries were ignored and the light coldly switched off. RIP Sinéad. You were great. You are clueless. The christian crusades killed over half the worlds population. Since then wars in the name of christianity have killed many billions of people. Not to mention telling gullible humans that they are superior and have dominion over the earth and all animals, has resulted in the destruction of the earths forests and killed most all wildlife and made the oceans vast dead zones. Christianity is far and away the worst evil to ever befall the beautiful earth.
I completely agree. I cannot understand why googling "Sineed O' Connor" brings "Nothing compares to you" up first. In "Troy" she is like the Vincent van Gogh of songwriting. Nothing like this existed before, nothing like this has been made after.
This is the first song video I chose to come to in honor of this proud Irish sonic force of Woman. I pray her soul is at peace with Shane and the pain inside her has ceased. That loss, that anger, that skewing of inner peace is something I wish I could strip her legacy of, but her pain birthed artist outputs that elevated her to be the exceptional artist she was. Sinead you have marked many of our collective hearts.
Yes, This was the first song I knew her by - and her first album I believe (CD). This song is so intense, not many songs or singers have the ability to convey such a deep intensity you can feel cut through you. It's too heavy for me now - but back then, I played it over and over. RIP Sinead O'Conner!!! RIP!
What a song, no not a song, this is art! Her voice, the drama in this song, all is masterclass! According me by far her best song. A great singer has been lost forever, may she rest in peace ❤
You can only say that if you haven't heard 'Black Boys On Mopeds", 'Haunted' (live with Shane McGowan) or the live verse Sinead performed for 'Belfast Child' with Simple Minds.
100% agree, although there are a few other contenders- Black Boys on Mopeds, Three Babies. The intensity of this song and how it moves through sadness to empowerment, rage, resilience and acceptance is phenomenal. It's always touched my heart, and given me a sense of emotional understanding and strength.
I remember listening to Sinead sing this in Bristol in the Colston Hall. She played before INXS in 1987 and she was unbelievable. Her voice filled the place. She didnt need anything but herself in all black with her monkey boots. Great memories. RIP 🙏 ✝️
A song that plays out like a movie. So underrated, and powerful like Queen of Denmark. Sinead brought us so much and there's still more to discover than the obvious.
Hearing this song for the first time as a young teenager in the 80s absolutely blew my mind. Her intensity, and the beauty and power of that voice knocked me for a loop. RIP Sinead. Thanks.
This. This has always been my favorite song of hers. I was 17 when I bought this album. I'd never heard anything like it. Troy has always and will always give me chills.
This album, and specifically THIS SONG, is absolutely foundational to the massive role which music plays in my life. I had never experienced music which was so deeply intimate, and yet so earth-shakingly powerful. Sinéad deserved so much better - I can only hope her desperately tortured soul is at peace at last.
Exactly how I see it. Well said. Troy is up there with any song ever produced - the imagery, the power in her voice, the reference to No Second Troy, the tragic theme, all sung by a beautiful and righteous soul. I'm sure Sinead and WB Yeats are comparing notes right now.
Rest in peace to one of the most fiercest, beautiful, talented and tortured musicians ever. The legend that is Sinèad O'Connor.. 'There is no other Troy for you to burn now' 😢
Dublin 1987. Not a rainstorm - more of a brainstorm. The realisation of a young man that a girl singer could kick ass. Thanks Sinead for leaving me awestruck at the creative capability of Irish women.
She was a rare gem in this world, with a raw and unique essence that only a few could truly comprehend, but those fortunate enough to understand her, experienced salvation through her music . Thank you, Sinead, for being irreplaceable - there will never be anyone like you. May you find eternal peace now. Your music has left an indelible mark on my soul, providing me with a lifetime supply of solace and healing.

Hi…I'm in Eastern Australia so the 26th of July 2024 is about 3 hours away - that is, one whole year since we lost this extraordinary soul and extraordinarily beautiful human being. For me personally and I'm pretty sure, for many of you…Sinead O'Connor was more than inspiration as an indescribably gifted musician…she was also inspiration as a strong person - who happened to be a woman - and a relentless leader who unashamedly and unapologetically stormed her way through her given territory, leaving a wake of truth…no matter how disruptive - it made it's mark and justifiably so. I was always in awe of this incredible lady, in so many ways. I remember watching a recent clip of her on stage with Van Morrison…and her humility was so sweet and so damn touching. 'The Lion & The Cobra' from 1987 is one of my top fav albums - yep vinyl - still have it in immaculate yet well played condition - because, I come from an era when playing records and treasuring 'things' was important. We looked after stuff and we enjoyed sharing our appreciation through actions. I'm not quite a boomer but I'm fkg glad I lived to experience those times. But the world is emptier since Sinead left but may she have found her peace. Thank you God. Good one 🎶👍
This is one of my top 10 favorite songs of ALL TIME. I am a huge music person with a vast collection so that is really saying something. It's friggin haunting! She has the BEST voice ever!!!!!! Sinead O'Connor is a world treasure.
Y'all are funny! I apologize Victoria. I saw this 6 months ago and then had a VERY busy 6 months. Sometimes life just happens. I will make a commitment to think about this over the next couple of days and come up with a definitive list.
@@Andrei-sm3er Ok. These are in no particular order. Just all in the top ten. The Four Tops - Reach Out, I'll Be There; Bette Middler - The Rose; The Supremes - Reflections; The Spinners - Working My Way Back To You Babe; The Posies - Flood of Sunshine; George Harrison - What is Life; The Beatles - A Day in the Life; The Bee Gees - Staying Alive & To Love Somebody. If we're going for top twenty I will also include the Rolling Stones - Can't You Hear Me Knocking; Elton John - Saturday is Alright for Fighting; Audioslave - I am the Highway; Def Leppard - Rock of Ages; Nirvana - Covering Leadbelly's In the Pines; Quiet Riot - Metal Health; Culture Club - White Boys Can't Control It; Michael Jackson - Billie Jean; Prince - Let's Go Crazy; Queen - Another One Bites the Dust. Sorry for the delay! I REALLY LOVE a lot of music and it was so hard to narrow it down out of thousands and thousands of songs that are special. I think I went with the ones that are not only musically appealing to me but the ones that have the most sentimental value.
When I first heard this song it stopped me in my tracks, I froze on the spot. The sheer force of Sinead’s powerful voice and the haunting, heartwrenching lyrics shook me to the core. To me this song transcends all others in emotional impact. It speaks of raw, unbridled, wretched heartbreak. When I need a strong emotional catharsis I go to this song.
I totally agree, just could not have put into words like you did. I had the same reaction the very first time I heard her singing on TV, around this time of this album "The Lion and the Cobra" - I was mesmerized! This is my favourite Sinead song.
This is still the absolutely best song I’ve ever heard. I remember when I first, as a 13 year old boy, saw this video. I already loved the song. But the video was so shocking, so naked. At first I didn’t like it. It was too naked, crept too far under the skin. But fascination took over. If you ask me this is a true masterpiece, not only musically but also visually.
She will find peace in her next incarnation. I will chant, Nam Myoho Renge Kyo for her to have a happier life. She will see her son again as well. She is unforgettable!
This song... this whole ALBUM, is incredible. Her subsequent work is fine, but this is the one that strikes like lightning and stays with you for a lifetime.
It's not often songs give me chills, but this one give me chills more than once. It's so powerful. I couldn't believe my ears when I heard it for the first time, and that was just a few days ago. I had only heard a few of her songs before this week, which I loved, but for some reason I didn't listen to more. But after learning more about her I felt like she is someone I might need in my life, someone to look up to and someone who can give me strength, and I was right. I wish I had discovered her sooner, but at the same time I'm glad I discovered her now because if my heart is this broken now, I can't believe what her long-time fans must feel. I hope she's at peace.
Tears have been rolling down my cheeks off n on all day...her music her depth...her death have triggered such intense emotion...as she did as a 17yr old leaving home, coming out in the late 80s and severe heartbreak that had me on the brink of suicide....no artist has touched the depths of my heart like Sinead....so much suffering beautiful soul and you were so misunderstood...I hope you have finally found some peace
👩🏻🦲My new Iphone wallpaper it's in tribute to Sinead O'Conner I can't believe she is no longer here on earth there has been a few female singers that have left a tattoo on my heart and soul she stood up for herself, and her beliefs, and face a ton of challenges plus a lot people hating her because of them it takes a lot of courage and determination plus effort to stand for what you believe in I loved everything about her she was a a warrior that stood the good fight never fear the feelings that you have inside speak because sometimes one word can make a difference R.I.P 👩🦲
This was the first song of hers I ever heard. Thank goodness for the old CFNY out of Toronto. I immediately had to go and track down _The Lion and the Cobra,_ and I was not disappointed. Still love it. Snagged tickets to see her when she played a local college campus (probably summer of 1988, still have the ticket stub around here somewhere). I remember being absolutely blown away. Sinéad, if your spirit is still out there and able to somehow see this, know you're loved and appreciated for your genius and talent.
The spirit never dies 🌟⚡️✨💛 Your soul is your platform That’s your world stage your spirit you Performing to an audience of one to one The one inside Self And God is watching over us ✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
I do agree her music was more emotive in the beginning, really grabbed one's heartstrings, and I admire your view, but it did not stop at 'The Lion & The Cobra'....for me, Sinead’s music isn’t supposed to sound catchy. It isn’t necessarily about the instruments, but about the instruments following or guiding her voice [the main instrument], and her voice is one of the best in the industry! Her melodies aren’t defined in the realms of mastering techniques, compression, high-polished guitar solo’s, synth lines, etc.. Her music doesn’t follow the predictable rhythm of what sounds fresh to the ear. That’s what separates her from the streetwalkers of the music industry who’ll work with just about anybody to make a quick buck or grab the latest sound. The backbone and substance of O’Connor’s songs are rooted in authentic storytelling, they cannot be sold off or edited for commercial approval, producer favor, which is significant in her genuine the emotive melodies that align perfectly through lyrics and topics that either uplift you or aggravate you. Her story has to be felt with the listener or it won’t be understood. That’s honestly what music is supposed to be like. I know that for me, I can feel her sensitive soul shine, ignite and fill that euphonious framework with a zealot passion that refuses to be forgotten. To me that extends just mere talent.
This song has always meant so much. You were so fierce, vulnerable, raw, authentic, intelligent and beautiful. Rest easy Sinead, I’m so sorry 💔 I’ll always love you ❤️
Arguably her BEST track.. nothing like it then and nothing like it now. The voice, the intensity, her look.... this is her legacy, not a Prince cover. No matter what you think of her and the life she led, she was the consummate artist. Did what she wanted on her terms.Very sad day.
It hits on everything-love, hate, loneliness, rage, tenderness, compassion, strength, gentleness, fear, and resilience. Sinead, you’ve left me speechless. RIP, beautiful one.
Beautiful, raw and visceral. Chills every time I listen ✨ Thank you for your beautiful music, Sinead. You were too pure for this world. Rest in paradise ❤️💜
First song from Sinead I ever heard. I was blown away. The lyrics are so intense. You visualize the story. You feel her pain. That voice...simply heart-wrenching. Best Album ever.
She said in interview that it was both healing and traumatizing to perform this song and after a time, she couldn't perform it live anymore I see why It must be one of our world's most powerful songs Thank you Sinead 💜
If you don't mind my asking, can you elaborate on the meaning of the lyrics. I read somewhere that it referred to her mother, other times it sounds like a romantic relationship broken..
Was shocked when I heard she passed today. This song takes me back to being 14 yrs old. Such amazing vocals. She was so underrated. So much scandal and sadness. RIP Sinead. 😢
This is her best song. I grew up listening to her. Lost her the last few years. Found her again last year. Now we have lost her forever. She will rise now with her son along side god and Jesus. Im not one for god, but I know she was. I hope she is at peace with her maker.
This is one of the best songs on the planet, it is SO iconic. I get goosebumps every time I hear it, it still moves me as much as it did when I first heard it so many years ago. RIP Sinead
Definitely extraordinary. But she got a lot from the world tho, didn't she? What more can you ask than these chances she had and this sort of career - countless people were as talented and never got this break. Everything else is of your own making then.
Yes, every song. For me, 'Just Like U Said It Would B' rivals this one as the best songs on the album... but every song is so good it's pointless to compare.
True artist. Real talent. Sincere energy. Pure intentions. Phenomenal singer / songwriter / producer. Unique voice, in many ways…..Rest in peace Queen 🤍💔
Mind-blowingingly brilliant. As we tread water in a sea of mediocrity you were certainly one of a kind who will forever shine as a beacon of light and inspiration in a troubled world. RIP Sinead.
First time I have been able to hear this song in years. When it came out, I had my heart badly broken for the first time, by a man from Dublin. So many songs through her career had resonance for me. Beautiful, vulnerable, formidable, and fearless woman. Thank you for singing your soul. Sleep sweetly, Sinead. You so deserve to. ❤
Sinéad was a kindred soul, one of the few who could convey the raw emotion that she was feeling through her vocals. You could feel the abuse that her mother had put her through when she was younger, and she let it all out here. Thank you, Sinéad. You may be gone, but your memory will never be forgotten by anyone. May you finally find eternal peace.
So misunderstood… so wrong and so judge You were a strong … independent and true woman who was brave enough speak out ,at the atrocities that went on in the church such a talented artist. Thankyou for helping me get strength in my darkest day with this intensely passionate song may your soul now … rest in peace x
This song sent waves of electricity through me when I first heard it in 1987. I never understood why it's not promoted. One of the most moving, incredible songs of all time. That feeling I got when I first heard it happens every time I hear it and I'm now 55. She may be gone but will live forever in her music. Long live Sinead.
Probably the greatest song ever written, as far as I am concerned. I don't cry a lot, but that song reduces me to a blubbery mess. Every. Single. Time.
This was the most important song out of all Sinead's, and I loved all her albums I had and listened to on repeat. I was teenager and English isn't my native language so I didn't understand much of the lyrics but the emotions of deepest sadness, longing and anger were cathartic to me then. I had quite traumatic childhood so this wasn't just a teenage angst, it was much deeper for me. I don't think Sinead is spending her time reading comments on YT, but I wish she knew that her creation gave moments of consolation when life wasn't bearable. And I hope that whatever she went through she found that consolation for herself too.
Beautifully said. I'm in tears. My connection to her music is also from my adolescence. Like you, I was dealing with severe trauma and a broken family. Her willingness to just let it all out and how she stood for truth knowing full well what was coming her way inspires me to this day. This woman saved my life quite literally and taught me so much. Like you, I hope she knows she has had this influence on other women. Glad you survived. I hope you are safe and well.
some of the most raw and otherwordly vocals ever recorded. Sinead felt too deeply - it's what set her apart form other people, she couldn't stay quiet when the majority did. I was heartbroken for her to hear a few years ago her young son had passed. In her life she sought God very sincerely. Now her battles are over, I pray she has found that wordless peace that the world cannot give.
This is the one of the most outstanding modern compositions I have ever heard, and written when Sinead was 16-17 ! thats mind blowing for such a young person. So much talent....I'm in awe ,never will tire of it.
What a gem. Rest In Peace dear Sinead. This whole record was on repeat all summer in 1988. My girlfriend (also gone to early, RIP DKL) and I listened to it over and over and over. Best summer of my entire life. Thank you SO.

This was my introduction to Sinead. It’s as powerful now as it was then. She will be missed and will be remembered as one of the greats.
It was also my 'introduction'' to Sinead. What an overwhelming voice she had. Perhaps you once want to watch 'My man's ohne now' by Gershwin tue Studio Version on you Tube!? Perhaps you know it already. If bot, I'd like to recommend it. It's so touching😔🙋🏻♀️
Same. I saw this music video late one night while at a party, and the next day I bought The Lion and the Cobra.
Ditto. Saw the video when it first came out and stood transfixed. Still my favourite of hers. Powerful.
Transfixed is a great description for how I also felt.
One of my favourite songs of all time.
Gutted. But grateful for her.
Mesmerising 🌹🥀💔
This was also my introduction to Sinead. I was blown away by her intenseness.
Troubled yes ( thank her mother) but even braver for calling out social injustices. Seriously misunderstood. Most powerful song ever.
Calling out social injustices, and the Catholic Church then joining Islam which is infinitely more barbaric.
By far her best song. Masterpiece doesn't even begin to describe this work of art.
SUPERBLY PERFECTLY SAID.🇮🇪🏴🍀🤟✌️🙏
her best song was by prince
I completely agree. I cannot understand why googling "Sineed O' Connor" brings "Nothing compares to you" up first. In "Troy" she is like the Vincent van Gogh of songwriting. Nothing like this existed before, nothing like this has been made after.
so true - awesome work of art!

It feels like we've lost one of the greatest Warrior-Poets Ireland has ever produced.
Rest In Power, Sinead.
The WORLD EVER PRODUCED.
Yeah
This is the first song video I chose to come to in honor of this proud Irish sonic force of Woman. I pray her soul is at peace with Shane and the pain inside her has ceased. That loss, that anger, that skewing of inner peace is something I wish I could strip her legacy of, but her pain birthed artist outputs that elevated her to be the exceptional artist she was. Sinead you have marked many of our collective hearts.
Beautifully put 🍀
Yes, This was the first song I knew her by - and her first album I believe (CD). This song is so intense, not many songs or singers have the ability to convey such a deep intensity you can feel cut through you. It's too heavy for me now - but back then, I played it over and over. RIP Sinead O'Conner!!! RIP!
Sail on strong girl, strong mother. Thank you for holding me in hard times. Your voice alone brought me comfort.
Beautiful words. I agree with everything you have said.
Beautifuly put.❤
Her voice was one thing. Her heart was everything. She listened to it. We didnt. Shame on us.
What a song, no not a song, this is art! Her voice, the drama in this song, all is masterclass! According me by far her best song. A great singer has been lost forever, may she rest in peace ❤
I agree
She was physically beaten by her mother from
Young age , you can hear her pain abc story in this song
Rest in Power. May your peace be eternal. Your words, your love, your voice lives on within our hearts. Thank you, Sinead. Thank you.❤

❤WOW
thoughtfully said!
Beautiful message ✌🏼♥️👍🏼
One of the most powerfully emotional songs ever written.
Sadly so
You can only say that if you haven't heard 'Black Boys On Mopeds", 'Haunted' (live with Shane McGowan) or the live verse Sinead performed for 'Belfast Child' with Simple Minds.
RIP 🙏 ✝️
This is an unbelievable piece of music. It's like an opera squeezed into six minutes.
Yes!
@@michelleandrews2522 Me too
This album, and specifically THIS SONG, is absolutely foundational to the massive role which music plays in my life.
Ditto. Also applies to SEALs first album.
Very well said. I couldn't agree more. The Lion and the Cobra is a masterpiece which everyone should experience.

I remember watching Troy after school one day on 'much music'.(I am 56) I felt an automatic connection to this golden faced punk girl and didn't know why.I will miss you Sinead.😢
First song I heard from her and her absolute best. I'll never understand why this wasn't played more, it's absolutely sensational.
This song speaks volumes. This album needs to be heard more. May your soul fly freely, Sinead. You did all that you needed to, especially making many aware of the atrocities done by the church. May you find yourself reconnected with your son.
Undoubtedly her best song, this song represents all her talents so well. One of a kind!
Good one 🎶👍
and RIP Troy…my love.
R.I.P. Sinead. Do zobaczenia w lepszym świecie. Dzięki za emocje. 😢😢😢

Only people who really know music profoundly understand that. And I do too.
Damien Holland A kindred spirit you are then Damien. Thank you.
I totally agree, just could not have put into words like you did. I had the same reaction the very first time I heard her singing on TV, around this time of this album "The Lion and the Cobra" - I was mesmerized! This is my favourite Sinead song.

Who says underrated? Undeniable masterpiece
Yes, considering the time and place . Hopefully she finds her peace and she can truly enjoy her son. ❤
Me too - probably my favourite song on earth. RIP
Agreed. And well said.

She will find peace in her next incarnation. I will chant, Nam Myoho Renge Kyo for her to have a happier life. She will see her son again as well.
She is unforgettable!
I wholeheartedly agree! Crank it up!
She‘s gone but this masterpiece will stay forever. You‘ll be missed😢 RIP
This song... this whole ALBUM, is incredible. Her subsequent work is fine, but this is the one that strikes like lightning and stays with you for a lifetime.
Universal Mother is quite amazing too, though in a much different way.
Was never a fan. Too sleepy.
Rip this song means a lot to me. You are with your son now again.

Still love it. Snagged tickets to see her when she played a local college campus (probably summer of 1988, still have the ticket stub around here somewhere). I remember being absolutely blown away.

She was a fuckin powerhouse in the late eighties.

She really deserved much better in this world. Everyone thought she was crazy, then the truth came out, and she was trying to protect the children.
Probably the best Sinead O'Connor song
+AceVoyage ....from the only good album she has 'the lion and the cobra'...her vocals were always ok but the music sucked big time later on...
Try: I feel so different (live)
Troy is absolutely Sinead O'Connor's best song.
My favorite tune of hers.

Arguably her BEST track.. nothing like it then and nothing like it now. The voice, the intensity, her look.... this is her legacy, not a Prince cover. No matter what you think of her and the life she led, she was the consummate artist. Did what she wanted on her terms.Very sad day.

Sinéad, you were as punk rock as it gets. Rock on, sis.
Very beautiful words here xx
Be happy, be safe you guys xx
She was way ahead of her time. Ironic songstress may you rest in paradise
some of the most raw and otherwordly vocals ever recorded.
She is incredible. No one belts it out with such raw emotion. Long live her talent.
This is the one of the most outstanding modern compositions I have ever heard, and written when Sinead was 16-17 ! thats mind blowing for such a young person.
