Just wanted to say thank you. My son had been using an old FM2 socket AMD, and was really suffering when he tried to game. I don't have the money to give him a new Ryzen rig, let alone ANYTHING i series intel based. But after watching your videos, I got an x5650 for 10 bucks, a board for 75, and 8 gigs of ram free from some old computer rigs at work. I even splurged and got him a refurbished 1060 GTX (the most expensive part of the build). He's sporting a rig that now plays all his games wonderfully, and didn't break the bank. I got the rig up to 4ghz on air, mem at 1600. And best of all, its a rig that will last at least a few years, if not push a decade. Thank you very much

If you were using 11 year old hardware in 2009, that meant you were using a Pentium II 300-450Mhz SINGLE core CPU or an AMD K6-II clocked at up to 550Mhz, the fastest gaming CPU of 1998, as opposed to the recently released Core i7 and Core 2 Quad CPUs.

If i get a X58 board for $20 but it's worth $150 you can be damn sure i'm going to re-sell sell it for $150! Everyones mind work differently but i feel like money is lost if i don't capitalize on the resale in that situation. I picked up a cheap Ryzen 1600 for $100 used and a B350 for $65 used so i could resell it for a tiny bit more but i feel good keeping it knowing it won't depreciate and insane amount of the next year or so.

Thanks to your videos..... I rebuilt my desktop/server back early 2016 with a Xeon E5-2658 V3 with 32GB DDR4 on the 2011-v3 platform. At the time.... I planned and researched for 3 months to find the right Xeon, motherboard and RAM for my needs (and to find good sales). The final price tag was about $500 (months before the DDR4 prices went nuts). I was running a 6-core AMD 1100T (no threading) and I wanted high-end I7 performance at AMD prices (Ryzen was no-where on the horizon at that time). I planned to be able to upgrade to a faster Xeon as prices allowed. But it seams that after 3 years.... Ryzen's 3000 Series pricing and performance is going to beat the hell out of any faster used Xeon I can get my hands on PERIOD. Even a 22-Core/44-Threaded used Xeon is not going to beat a Ryzen 7 3900x in price or performance. So... My next upgrade will be a Ryzen 7 3900x and new motherboard unless a Xeon just drops into my lap for a laughably cheap price. In any case, I will be waiting, planning and researching for a while. I made a promise to my self a long time ago to never pay more than $200 for a CPU. I've kept every system I have built in the past 2 decades in or around $500.

Delighted to see another X58 video. I've just finished a massive rebuild on a dual X5690 (A video will appear eventually). It would eat your X5660 productivity scores with 12 cores and 24 threads but it's not over-clockable, just ~3.5 GHz.
One of the GPUs is though, a Palit Super Jetstream GTX 980 Ti (3 slot beast). I've squeezed an extra 330 MHz on the memory and 75MHz on the core out of it without stability issues as such. I am having a weird hard reset issue though whenever I load up either GPU suddenly. Could be some sort of OCP issue on the board (Dell Precision T7500) or PSU (1100W). Its odd as measured at the wall it has never topped 500W and normally sits at about 320W. Maybe something is on the way to failing. I wondered if you'd ever seen a similar issue with all your X58 experience?

Ran my Dell XPS 420 with BSEL OC on a Q6600 (3Ghz) for ELEVEN YEARS!!!! I couldn't afford to decommission it any earlier because the damn thing cost me nearly $3000 new. Upgraded in late 2018 to an X79/E5-1660, OC to 4.3 Ghz, and have been quite pleasantly surprised at the value/performance. I think I spent about $520 on the complete system, to include a new Coolermaster RGB blinged case with tempered glass side, new PS, 16GB EEC RAM, and used motherboard and GTX980.

It's so cool that you are planning to do an LGA2011 comparison with literally the exact same hardware I am about to build with! To be specific, that's my Asus Rampage IV Extreme and the Xeon E5-1680 V2 that I finally got around to buying when there were only two left for $200 on eBay! I'm hoping this E5-1680 V2 will be able to reach similar clocks as my previous CPU, an E5-1650 (V1/Sandy-E), which were 4.7GHz with HT on and 5.0GHz with HT off (gaming OC profile) on a Corsair H100i (2x120mm). These chips do clock like gangbusters, and have only shown temperature limitations up to 5GHz in my limited experience with the Rampage IV.
LGA2011 processors do clearly have improved OCing over LGA1366, which even with pretty good cooling and unlocked CPUs like the W3690 seem to top out around 4.5GHz with HT on and 4.7GHz with HT off.
So I feel like I should ditch one of my 1366 rigs in order to work the 2011 rig into the mix, but I love both of my 1366 mobos! The Gigabyte GA-X58A-OC and the Gigabyte G1 Guerrilla are both just super-badass boards for that platform, and replete with both nostalgia and actually good performance. I hate to set either aside inactive, so I should probably sell one. But I can't choose which to ditch.
    Any thoughts, anyone?

Excellent review... I was rocking a 980x for the longest time, in an Alienware Auroroa R1 that was given to me with a 920 in it. That kept up with a 2070 no problem, and only recently got upgraded due to a little project I simply wanted to do. Which was to convert that Aurora R1 into an R4 via slight case mods to accommodate the slightly different mobo, and mostly to accommodate the different cpu back-plate for the aio. Beyond that, it all just worked... and now I am running the new and shiny .. . .. i7 3930K, which will soon be a 4930K.... either way, this clears up some SATA 3 issues, brings better USB 3 functionality... cleans up ram compatibility and makes using DDR3 2400MHZ and overclocking it easier... so on and so forth. That said, the 980x was already keeping up with a 7700K and then some @ around 4.4Ghz. With the 3930K going a tad further, and the 4930K likely making things a bit easier to come. But speed wise.... x58 is hardly any slower than Sandy, Ivy, Broad, Has.... they can all run hand in hand while crunching numbers.... and can all embarrass the absolute hell out of the new and expensive shit. Depreciation is very real, and it pays dividends to be on the smart side of it.

Been following this channel for a while now and as we regular followers know, this guy loves his X58s 🙂. I am also a value for money kind of person, so what I love about his reviews - compared to some of his peers some of whom have millions more subs - is the thoroughness of his reviews. Granted he gives the benchmarks (all of them do) but also clearly states facts that others tend to leave out more often than not - such as power draw. So while its easy to prove to his subscribers how much value they can get by saving money upfront with an X58, he also clearly provides power draw comparison data which folks can use to run their own calculations based on power cost in their own areas to judge whether and how long the upfront savings might last. In short, even though he clearly loves X58s, his reviews provide a much more rounded and unbiased analysis and approach that his viewers can follow to decide for themselves whether X58 makes sense for them or not. Well done, mate! Keep up the good work 👍

Really nice channel. I am not a Gamer but an IT Pro and have a X58 System since 10Years now and use it primary for Virtualization on Hyper-V. I have a MSI X58Pro Board with 48GB Ram, GTX970, 2 Samsung 850Ssd, 1 HDD and currently a I920 CPU. I will add also an additional M2 SSD via a PCIe Adapter now. You will call me an idiot because I have since almost 2 years a X5675 CPU here but never had time to build it in and OC it. But hopefully in the next Weekends... I really like the X58 platform but as you said it’s becoming now old. For me the topic of fast storage is more important and the newer chipset with the support for a lot of M2 SSDs and more PCI lanes, USB3.1 etc. I guess this will be the only reason why to upgrade for me. But I will keep the current system for a year or so with X5675.

It was in a huge server case with 500 fps psu so it saved us from buying a new one. The only thing that is missing now is a rx 580 8gb or something like that.

Thanks for the comparison Bryan. I know your test methodology was for a CPU comparison but I would've been interested to see how they compare at a more realistic resolution someone would be using if they had a 2080 Ti like 4K or 1440 UW. I'm still running my X5680 with a 1080Ti at 3440x1440 but I'm not sure a GPU upgrade will be worth it since I feel like I've pretty much reached the limit with the 1080 Ti. Would've loved to see one or two benches with the 2080 Ti to see how much the old Xeon's are holding it back, if it's not too late please crank one out. Thanks for all your hard work and keep these old comparisons coming!

I have had a couple x58 systems, and spent a lot of time tweaking them. In general, the platform performs best with memory around 1900mhz. Running faster memory requires either lower the mem to uncore ratio, or ramping the QPI/VTT voltage excessively which will damage the memory controller rapidly. Running mem to uncore ratio below 2x has a considerable loss in performance which equates to how R3000 has a similar loss in performance when running uclk and fclk asynchronously. While I dont expect it to be a game changer, I feel that the x58 might not have shown its best card. I have run up to 2200mhz on my best x5675 for some short term bench runs 2:1 uncore, but my typical configuration was around 1870ish for the memory with the 2x mem +1 multipler. This allowed me to run 4.8ghz single core turbo, and 4.6gh multi core with offset voltage. By far was the fastest configuration for the setup, but was not an easy overclock and took a lot of testing to get there.
Thanks for showing how these 6 cores line up. Its time for me to let my last x58 go. I still have my x79, but I need to make room in the case for AMD :)

I want to comment to say that Brian/Tech Yes City is very cool, informative, knowledgeable and entertaining. To go into why I am posting and details would be a very long comment, so I'll TRY (haha!) to keep it short: basically, a few months ago my friend gave me a rig that he had "lying around", and it contained the following: DX58so (lga1366) motherboard, i7920 cpu, 8 gb DDR3 Ram, msi 970 twin frozer gpu, stock intel cooler, 2 640 GB HHD's...but ah, it came with a Cosair CX750m PSU! NICE! SOO... a flame had been lit under my arse to see what this was all about, and how I could upgrade the platform to the best I could, and before I give the specs of where I am now, 3 months later, I just want to give a big shout-out, hat-tip to Tech Yes City, Linus Tech Tips, Gamers Nexus, The Obsoletist
, Bit Wit, Jaz2cents, etc. for the very real knowledge, fun, inspiration. Now, as of this post my rig: Xeon w3690 6 core, 12 threads cpu 3.47Ghz..MUST FLASH MOST CURRENT BIOS (overclocked to 4.2Ghz, can and will definitely go higher,), GTX 1060 sc 6gb (overclocked to 1835 mhz!), 16gb DDR3 Ram (XMP profile of 1600mHz is not stable, so at around 1500 mhz), MSI Optix G24C 24" curved 144Hz monitor, Silverstone PM01 RGB case with additional 2 be-quiet 140mm fans (just got this, so thermal results will be soon ..6 internal 140mm fans!) Everything is on air (no water-cooler, using a cooler master g100m rgb cooler with fan set to max speed, max temp at 4Ghz is like 57c to 60c..but this is the "old" case with 1 exhaust fan and the side cover taken off, and has not been transferred yet to the new SIlverstone case with all of the fans!). ANYWAY, my point is, is that we x58 folks are having fun and enthusiastic with our platforms...personally, I am really enjoying my rig and specs even though is may not be the most current. But in terms of price and performance I couldn't be happier. And your videos on such subject, I want to say again, have and are an inspiration...and will continue to watch! I will say that, it is ironic how the Dx58so is still fetching high prices..as of this post, someone is selling it with an i7 970 on ebay for $170 usd! That's all for now, could go on! THANK YOU!

For a 60hz gamer, with less than a 2080ti, this CPU is still doing fine. I'm sure there's the occasional 1% and .1% low drops below 60, but very impressive for it's price and age. I would happily run it on my LAN. Anyone still running these should be proud. I completely agree with what you're saying about having the experience on the older stuff. I started overclocking, back when I had to crack open my Slot Athlon CPU, and de-solder and solder small surface mount resistors, that were just barely larger than a poppy seed. Possibly about the same size. I got a 25% OC out of it, and that was 200% the price for that speed retail. Good times.

What's amusing about those gaming fps results is that if games back when X58 was new had been showing performance that high with GPUs/games of the day, people would have been absolutely mindblown, there would have been fainting in the streets. :D It's funny how we've all become so used to crazy high frame rates these days that now we look at X doing 100fps and Y doing 130fps and think ugh, X sucks. :) Check out this original review of the i7 920, and note they're testing at lower resolutions to emphasise CPU differences (just as many sites still do today):
    www.anandtech.com/show/2658/19
Compare to normal GPU reviews of that era, eg. the GTX 280 and AMD 4870, "normal" fps rates are nowhere near what people expect today, and back then nobody cared about stuttering or minimums that much (1%/.1% lows didn't yet exist as a metric):
    www.anandtech.com/show/2549/11
    www.anandtech.com/show/2556/13
The other point worth noting from back then is how well CF/SLI behaved, especially SLI (in some cases almost perfectly linear scaling). I had 2x 8800GT, it was awesome for Crysis, Stalker and Oblivion.
It's a very different GPU landscape today, SLI/CF are dead but single GPU performance is very strong. In that sense, it's impressive that old X58 tech can hold up as well as it does for gaming. A pity that some newer games require certain features not present in the old CPUs, but such changes are inevitable in the long run. Certainly I think if one had told Shimpi back in 2008 that a GPU from 2018 on a mbd from 2008 with a now cheap X58 XEON would for gaming in some cases be only 20% slower than 2019 CPU tech he would have been utterly astonished.
One could argue of course that mainstream CPU/mbd X58 hw from 2008 (even oc'd) would fair nowhere near as well compared to modern tech, eg. what back then would have been well thought of such as the i7 950, but that isn't the point of the video, ie. it's the fact that the X58 XEONs are now so cheap which is interesting (even a year ago I bought two X5690s for a decent sum). Still, since good X58 mbds are too expensive unless one can strike it lucky, as many would rightly say it makes more sense for this sort of budget realm to look at X79. Otoh, messing about with X58 and other old arches like P55 is certainly fun, the oc gains back then were significant and it was a greater challenge than SB (which made oc'ing ridiculously easy). I think this may be why X58 and P55 have become so valued, unlike today's tech they're genuinely interesting to work with. Come the SB era, oc'ing became boring; ASUS M4E, 2700K, within 5 mins one can have it at 5GHz stable. X79 is a bit more involved, but the loss of bclk oc'ing meant much of the intrigue was gone.
One thing I'd forgotten about X58 though was in some cases how strongly Core2Quad still held up. Nehalem didn't shine until the clocks rose with the i7 950 and beyond. Crysis for example showed a perfect mixing of the two arches at launch:

I sold my x58 Sabertooth with i7 960 adn 8gb DDR3 in it for 200€ few months back. The buyer only wanted the board, but I wanted to sell it all at once, and he still agreed even with price increase that this incured. These boards are indeed still in some demand.

It would bottleneck the 2019 cpus to the point they're equal to the xeon. But even with an rx 580 the new cpus would be better because they have more consistent 1% and 0.1%

Ian Cutress did an article on Zen 2 cores, how not every core can max turbo to the same speed. An all core overclock isn't the best way to get the most out of Zen 2. Maybe that's why you could only get 4.125 ghz all core OC, as that would have been the fastest boost speed of the slowest core.

Nice vid, I have an old hp z400 workstation I upgraded over time here and there, thinking about throwing in a 6 pin pci power connector 4gb rx 570 in it, if nothing else would make a pretty stout backup pc, got a xeon x5675 6c/12t in it now...can't OC on the hp board though, the turbo boost to ~3.4ghz from base 3ghz will have to do. Years ago when my main pc went down and the low clocked 2.66-2.93ghz i7 920 factory xeon equivalent was still installed, it gamed and multitasked fine when needed. My main pc these days is a ryzen 1700 with 8gb rx 480, it certainly suffices on 1080p.

I know the whole point of cpu benchmarks is to highlight a worst case scenario where you are CPU bound, but that doesn't fully correlate to real world loads. I'm not saying this to disparage this testing. I love this testing. I'm just stating that with a GTX 1080 Ti, you'd probably be gaming at 1440p or 4k. And in those cases, these gaps wouldn't be nearly as wide. I run a GTX 1080 and try to target 4k60 with my xeon w3680 at 4.25GHz. I'm pretty sure I'm 99% GPU bound and a platform upgrade wouldn't be a giant game changer.

I am building my wife a new computer for Xmas this year and whilst she still loves her current computer its getting time to upgrade and I get the benefit of her old system which is the sabertooth x79 mobo which is running a i7 that has never been overclocked since I purchased it new about 8-10 years ago lol.. could make a nice system out of it..

Which RAM settings (clock frequency, CL and secondary timings) did you use? The minima for the 3600 seem rather low for CS:Go. Linus Tech Tips (Anthony) has shown that the minima FPS are strongly influenced by the clock frequency and timings of RAM, tight timings help a lot. On a different topic, breakdancing at home is a good way to stay fit when you can't hit the gym, well done.

I like this video because it actually shows A) how little progress there's been (except power use, power use is so much lower) and B) how powerful AMD's six core is for the money. I'm sure someone at Intel marketing has nightmares about the 3600/x CPU's . I really like how cheap these old Xeons are though , that's great value .
