It Won't Fly Without the Most Important Part of an RC Airplane, Jet Engine Mounts.

  • The wings for the RC L-1011 Kit Airline design and build have been held up because of the engine nacelles, I needed to get those designed to make sure nothing changed on the wing's frames.
Thought I'd share how this component of the build will go together in a quick animation I created in Fusion 360.
The pylons and mounting rings are made of wood (Baltic Birch), the brackets are 3D printed carbon fiber reinforced nylon with brass heat set inserts. Very little glue required outside of the pylons and doublers.
These engine nacelles can be assembled in under an hour and design for easy accessibility, maintenance, engine swaps and repairs, and easy replacement of damaged parts. They're designed to accept EDFs or Turbines up to 120mm diameter, though currently 90mm EDF's is looking to be the most ideal in a 2 engine configuration. This airplane is being designed in such a way that gives the builder flexibility in power plant selection and rapid assembly.

Take your time, I’m still saving for this piece of art that I will probably crash on the maiden flight after 1200hr build and divorce, LOVE IT!!!

Dude, these animations are freaking amazing! I can't even imagine how much time must have gone into making them.

Terrance, Curious, will the engine in tail also have an EDF operating in it?

Hey RCCAD2VR, Im loving this project a lot and I hope everything is going well with it. Im an aerospace eng student whos really curious about the design process of new aircraft and the creative process thats behind designing structures such as the wing box, the wing itself and detailed components such as the landing gear and indeed the engine mounts. I was just wondering, what goes into the creative/design process for designing such components? Also, what part(s) do bending moments and stresses on the materials play in the design of joints and other parts? Thanks heaps! Hope all goes well with the rest of the project, it's genuinely fantastic.

I thought money made airplanes fly...or was it magic.
