That new pickup sounds incredible though. The low end on it. Wow! Nice.

Back to life, it was crazy hearing it so powerful after getting used to the lower output pickups in it for so long!

Well, the tubing on the screws can be replaced easily enough, you can reflow the solder if contacts are intermittent, and you can even (counter to intuition) reheat the pickup to get the wax to melt where it might have cracked.
But if you suspect the pickup to be unwinding (did it become microphonic?) or somehow the poles losing their strength due to an external EM force, best send it to a professional. But really, I think you have the right idea of just keeping the old one in the case/bag for now in case you decide to resell, and get on with making music again with the spiffy new replacement!

Since day one both pickups were really microphonic much more so than I was used to but I thought it was a nice part of the charm honestly. The winding looks like it may have damage specifically on the bridge pickup on an exposed area, so lord knows that’s probably contributing a bit.

Fantastic video and informative too! The lollars sound fantastic in there which is a happy outcome but 40 years from the original pickups is a good innings!!!

In this day and age, any product lasting 40 years is a huge win in my book hahahaa

Woah, crazy. It like, disintegrated! Didn’t know this could happen, since pickup electronics are so primitive. Thanks for sharing this

I was shocked to see it myself, can only imagine what could have done that and how it managed to last so long in the state it was in!

I have a set of 1965 mustang pickups I need rewound. One died, the other I just don’t like. Gonna get them rewound similar to strat pickups for more power.

That's a great idea, strat pickups sound killer in mustangs

I had a 1974 Mustang bass pickup die. I sent it to Belli Bros. and they beefed it up for me with bigger pole pieces and tiny diameter wire and put as many windings as they could get under the covers. It was awesome!

I put a high powerd magnet on the bridge pickup of a Shecter SH-1 and it killed that pickup.
Luckely my Guiter tech had a used Semor Dunkin humbucker laying around and he just put it in my Shecter as a replacement.
That was wayback when you could just go to a place that fixes guitars.

Oh yeah, magnets and steel wool can kill pickups for sure. Your last sentence made me really sad because it’s so true and why I’ve invested so much in tools and information to be able to fix things myself… seemingly very few great places left or accessible.
