      Benji Sun There was a time when Wishes could take any card outside the game, not just cards in your sideboard, and Shahrazad was still legal. You could start the Shahrazad subgame, then use Burning Wish to get the Shahrazad that was resolving in the main game, and cast that. By the time all the subgames have finished, you'd have the rules nightmare of a spell that was trying to finish resolving while it had changed zones probably several times, and was now in all likelyhood inside your library, instead of on the stack where it's supposed to be. Good times.

    Richard Garriott always seems to be such a good sport. He once met up with (and even made a fan video with) a reviewer who, while praising the first Ultima games, seriously thrashed the later games. I think most people would have gotten upset with the criticism and would not have bothered to meet the guy.

      @CardsAndComputer 9 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Gage Horton He was referencing the review made by a reviewer called Spoony. In the game Ultima IX the main character at one point can ask "What's a Paladin?", which considering that in the previous games the same character had tons of interactions with paladins and was best friends with one, really offended the reviewer and he made it sort of a running gag throughout the review.

  • @MrMalorian
    @MrMalorian 9 ปีที่แล้ว +651

    This is a great game. The slave thing doesn't bug me at all. It's historically accurate.

    • @Mich199999
      @Mich199999 9 ปีที่แล้ว +55

      MrMalorian completely agree with you. sometimes history is not the most friendly thing in the world like slaves but changing the name I feel anyway is covering it up in a sense. They handled this very maturely but i still don't like the idea of not using the proper term for them because in this time period that is what they were.

    • @Daremachina
      @Daremachina 9 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      Why does historical accuracy hold so much weight in a worker placement game set in a fictional land where your appease magical beings?
      It's an abstract game and slaves are not an integral part of the mechanics or theme which is why Days of Wonder are able to change them into fakirs.

    • @walsh1916
      @walsh1916 9 ปีที่แล้ว +66

      Mich199999 I actually think that Wil handled it immaturely. The mature thing to do would have been to just play the game and not mention it. But since Wil is a typical SJW, he had to make a big deal about it to show how against slavery he is.

    • @MrMalorian
      @MrMalorian 9 ปีที่แล้ว +66

      Just to be clear: slaves serve no purpose, and it's wrong to incude the idea of slaves, but assassin and murder is ok. Is that your arguement? Maybe assassins should be removed from the game and replaced with 'relocation officers'. And what's this and forcing the idea of Gods down my throat? Maybe they need to be replaced with simple bonus cards. No, it's the theme of the game, based on a historical setting, where murder, the use of slaves, and belief in gods, was a real thing.

    • @Daremachina
      @Daremachina 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      walsh1916 OR Days of Wonder let him know that they're changing the slaves into a different type of unit and he had to address it on the show but had limited info about what the change would be.

    Have to say, I think this s one of the best episodes for displaying how good strategy is thought through. The thinking process from each person was valuable to helping see how strategy is developed over the course of a worker placement game.

      Actually, the slave cards caused such an uproar on the Internet that Days Of Wonder already announced the second printing will replace slaves with fakirs, and they've already made the fakir cards available on boardgamegeek for $5.

      UnNuclear Yes, it would be people filled with complaining about the slaves. You are very naive if you think otherwise. You would not have noticed and many others would not have noticed. Historical revisionism is bad, mkay. Pretending a bad thing never happened is infinitely worse than acknowledging it without endorsing it.
    I'll also never get over the fact that murder is perfectly fine to represent while many things with a far greater survival rate are not, but that's a larger issue with our culture as a whole and I can't really blame Wheaton for that one.

      Rabek Jeris To call this a "historical game" is laughable. The existence of djinn and the fantastical elements rule that right out. Now slaves do play a part in 1001 Arabian Nights, from which the game is based, so to say that is staying true to the source material is a little more fair...
      However, we have to acknowledge the difference between the cultural context of then and now and at least treat serious subject matter such as this with some degree of gravity. Slavery and the like can be well handled in games such as Freedom: The Underground Railroad but stand out as being in bad taste in such a game like this that does not address the matter outside of its existence.

    • @howudoinmun
      @howudoinmun 9 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      Ixe So the game is in bad taste if it portrays something that did happend in the time in which this game is based (It can have still supernatrual elements) without clearly stating that is is horrible. Should they pretend like slavery didn't exist during this time, should they attach a note saying that they dont like slavery or what. Like wtf not everything has to be a documentary about human-rights violations.

      He removed the name because its supposed to be a family friendly show, no one is ignoring the existence of slavery. God, every time someone does something *slightly* close to censorship/feminism, the anti-censorship and anti-feminists leap out of the shadows and yell about how its a big deal. The very fact that you have the ability to argue disproves the existence of the problem in your local region.

    • @ezrablock3218

      What I dislike is that people who are against a certain type of extremism, tend to be quite extremist themselves, and give a bad name to the people they represent. .

    The slave cards have now actually been officially replaced by Days of Wonder with "fakirs" instead. You can buy them as an upgrade and they come with new versions of the game.
    The whole historically-accurate argument makes no sense as there are mystical elements in the game. Djinns are not historically accurate. It would be more fitting to argue that slavery is part of the legends this game is based on. Either way it's up to each person what they prefer I guess.

      So... you don't like people being needlessly offended over a word, so you're going to be needlessly offended over some different words?

      Will said, he found the concept of slavery objectionable. Fair enough. That's different than denying it existed. In fact he specifically said it existed.

      well, its a little silly. So assassination is ok but slavery is not? when he's GM'in rpgs, does he handwaive slavery? Sure, slavery is bad, but so is assassinating and being an asshole to foes and a plethora of other thing that is part of gaming.

      The problem is there are clear "winners" and "losers" in slavery. Assassination doesn't have stereotypical "sides." That's what makes people testy. That said...I still find it as objectionable as joking about murder / killing...and in game-play terms, qualifies as "just a game"

      If you haven't heard of lines and veils, I wonder how much familiarity you have with RPGs. Let's leave GMing to people who have played a few, eh?

    The intro made me think of another game with the same setting, Tales of the Arabian Nights. It is probably my favorite board game for story and adventure.

    Interesting that you find camels run out. In four games, it's always been moves than run out for us.
    I love how different every game is!
