Because I didnt know how long the coolant had been in the van (should change it every few years) and had to do the thermostat as well, I did drain all the coolant, which is about 12 litres. Its advisable to do the same if you dont know how many years its been in there and replace with fresh. You could however (knowing the coolant isnt very old) clamp the 2 flexible sections of pipe near the heat exchanger and just drain out the bit thats in the matrix itself, without the need to drain the whole system.
