At 78, I've lived in my 38' RV that I solar powered and recently upgraded to lithium batteries for 14 years. I walk everywhere as I don't tow a car or load a bike - I pull a heavy duty cart I built. I grocery shop weekly. I now use notes to make a check list and recently - thanks to your videos - when finished I take a picture of the receipt, adding it after the list. Hey Rich, I found out about IOS 18 last week . It’s terrific! I know I’ll enjoy watching you with all your new episodes. Thanks, looking forward to it.
Always find little golden nuggets in your presentations. In this case you solved the problem as to why my notes in iPadOS 18 would not collapse. It was simply a matter of formatting the first line as a title or a heading. Many thanks for that.

Hi Rich, can you share the audio recording and transcript with other people who might not be using Apple, perhaps Windows, for example? Thanks for a great explanation.
I am hoping that later you will go into more info on the smart scribe. I have been using the iPadOS 18 public beta since it came out. I make a lot of screen shots and then write notes and highlight sections of the text and the smart scribe has improved with every update. My problem is all the channels I watch for new features in the beta versions mention how you can change the distance between words, correct, etc. but go over it so fast that I cannot make it work for me.
It would be helpful if you mentioned the configuration of the iPad you’re using for your demo. After updating to IOS18 and trying the new Notes, I found that some of the features you showed don’t work on my iPad Pro 11” which is about 4 years old.
Those are some nice features but the one that is keeping me from switching from Evernote is web page clipping, where is can cutout just the text of a webpage and not all the advertisements. The other thing I would like to see is a iCloud shared note like Photos. My wife and I need a shared note to add food items to a groceries list.
Which browser are you using? If Safari, it does have the reader option that work for some websites. You can bring it up for a particular website by clicking on the Aa icon on the left of the address bar. You can also use the reader mode automatically and it will cut out all the distractions (as long as the website supports it) and then if you want to add it to a note, I’m sure there is a way to do it. As far as shared notes, from what I have watched so far, I wouldn’t be surprised there would be a way to do that. I know now notes, reminders, and calendar have some integration abilities. Maybe if you and your wife share an apple calendar, you could attach the shopping list right to the calendar.
In covering the audio recording feature, no admonishment is made re: recording people without their knowledge. It cannot be assumed that people understand that they should always notify any other participants in a conversation before recording.
previously record didn't work if you were on a phone call. This was very frustrating when say a doctors office called with an appointment and you couldn't note it down fast enough as they spoke. I sometimes would have to ask them to call back and leave a voice mail so I could remember the information
I’m looking forward to the collapsible sections in Notes. Will the section collapse with media in it, such as a photo or pdf or will it just collapse the text?
Rich. I know this is not the correct video but how do I find spotlight? I have the new iOS 18 and I have no clues. Sometimes I think you’re assuming we have a knowledge of what you’re talking about how many of us don’t
Do some of these new features just work on certain ipad models? Several of items you demonstrated do not work on my ipad 9th generation on IOS 18, for example the transcript option with reording? I did enjoy the demo, however.
I think the 9th gen iPad should have all the features as other iPads. I'm running a later beta version of iPad OS 18, so my guess is your iPad will catch up very soon as Apple releases the updates. Hope this helps!
Hi ! I have been note taking on ipad pro since the first gen ipad pro. Using Apple Notes causes the device to heat a lot. And I have experienced it all the time in all the devices. And this has forced me NOT to use Apple Notes. Have you too ?
Heating a bit - yes - but only on my iPhone. Not my iPad. But the heat on my iPhone is only noticeable and not annoying. I have heard about this a little bit though. I hope an update to your devices fixes this issue for you.
Was wondering if you know of a way to use notes as a sticky note for your desktop. I know there’s a notes widget but I can’t find a way of having more than one. When I pop a 2nd on up, it shows the same note as the previous one I have. I’d like to have multiple notes.
Hello, thanks for all the tips and info. Regarding the audio transcription feature. Can we copy ONLY the transcription (not audio) to another new note ?
In some doctor's offices, there are signs that say NO RECORDING OF AUDIO OR PHOTOS ARE ALLOWED. It really would be handy for me to record what the doctor says about a new prescription he is authorizing.
Here's a handy tip for those of you who write notes (in my case, in cursive) while recording audio, yes, you can do that! Just open a new note (I call my Audio Notes), add it as a slide over item, start your recording, slide the Audio Notes panel so that it's hidden, type your meeting notes in the other note. When the meeting is done, you can slide over to the "hidden" Audio Note, hit DONE, then drag and drop it into the meeting note. Voila! Now you have all your action items and a copy of the audio note with the transcription. Now if you'll excuse me, I've got to go cancel my subscription to other note taking software.
Wow! What a great suggestion. I'm going to try this too. I should put this idea in a video. Makes so much practical sense without being super hard to do. Thanks so much for the tip!

How many levels can we do/collapse. This feature, inc 6 levels, was avail. In iWork almost a decade ago. Can you collapse/uncollapse multiple headings by assigning a keyboard shortcut. Thanks
Just upgraded to iPad os18. Smart scribe doesn’t work. And the audio recording doesn’t have the option to convert to text. Any idea why this is happening?
funfact they introduce that many features in notes app that made it very heavy.....and its constantly crashing in my air m2....also the screen is getting really hot after 15min of usage an battery heavily draining
I know I can put a password on individual Notes, but does the Notes app have a password for the app as a whole? I thought that was coming with iOS 18..
Still does not have bookmarking within a note or automatic directories of a folder.. without these, it is still waaaaay behind EverNotes or other 3rd party apps
Very good tips, thank you. Way too much for a worn out broken down old man to remember and learn. I'll just have to keep watching the video and trying after the upgrade comes. Thank you again.
More iOS than iPad version. Some of these features are iOS 18 which isn’t formally released until the 16th September. look for available updates to the OS then and you should be able to follow along.
I wish that could happen. But my guess is that the older devices do not have enough on-device storage, memory and power to house the AI functionality. Unlike other companies, Apple has decided to keep AI as "private" as possible. And that's takes a different architecture than has existed previously. It'll all be on-device, or at least most of it, as opposed to flying up to the cloud, getting an answer, and delivering it back to the device. I guess we'll see how it really turns out.
I've gotten used to it. One of these days I'm going to make a video on how I use the Apple Pencil in my work. It's probably less than what people think, but I do use it strategically, and I find it useful. Thanks so much for watching!
I frequently hand write notes. But what Rich doesn’t mention is that Scribe isn’t restricted to notes. It works system-wide. For example, if you edit a photo in the Photos app, and write a note on the photo, Scribe will work there, as well.
In ios simple tasks which is essential to everyone is addedas a feature in the latest update. Thats an irony. Many features which are upcoming in ios update are available on other OS since ages

Just upgraded to iPad os18. Smart scribe doesn’t work. And the audio recording doesn’t have the option to convert to text. Any idea why this is happening?
Your iPad likely doesn’t support those features (need to upgrade = $$$)
funfact they introduce that many features in notes app that made it very heavy.....and its constantly crashing in my air m2....also the screen is getting really hot after 15min of usage an battery heavily draining
I know I can put a password on individual Notes, but does the Notes app have a password for the app as a whole? I thought that was coming with iOS 18..
You can set any app to require FaceID to open with iOS 18.
does smart scrirbe change your handwriting into a font?
No, it just sort of "cleans" up your handwriting a bit. It still looks like your handwriting, only neater.
@ ok thanks do u know if they’ll make something like what I said in the future
How well does SmartScribe work with cursive?
Good question. I've not tested that out. I've seen a video or two where it seems to work pretty well.
but don't you need m1 to get new things in it
Still does not have bookmarking within a note or automatic directories of a folder.. without these, it is still waaaaay behind EverNotes or other 3rd party apps
iPad has always had a calculator, from day 1. 😉
Why does my screen look nothing like your screen? What settings am I missing?
Have you updated to the new software? That could be it 🤷🏼♂️
How come you’re talking IOS18 when the most last update I have got is 17.7?
Ios 18 came out last monday16 Sept
Very good tips, thank you. Way too much for a worn out broken down old man to remember and learn. I'll just have to keep watching the video and trying after the upgrade comes. Thank you again.
Ha! I told my wife I need an overhaul - like a car. I could use a lot of new parts. Thanks so much for watching!
I have ipad 10th generation cannot see where you are in yhese lessons nor in calculator to add notes i need your help
More iOS than iPad version. Some of these features are iOS 18 which isn’t formally released until the 16th September. look for available updates to the OS then and you should be able to follow along.
Solutions in search of a problem or need?
Hard to say. I think those that program not only need to solve problems, but find better ways to do common things. Thanks so much for watching!
Math notes is cool but you have to pay for it. Crazy expensive if memory serves.
No charge for Math Notes, built into iPadOS 18
Apple needs to bring their new AI to their older devices and not just their newest ones.
I have an iPad Pro and have IOS 17.6.1. When will we see IOS 18???
Soon. My guess is in a few weeks from that date of the release of this video.

Apple note has heating issues
Using a pencil to write notes is like using a USB record player to play music. Fun to try, stupid to use.
Oh iPad OS 18
Rich expects us old folks to have 18 beta
Otherwise there ain’t no dang smart scribe in 17.6.1
Ya my phone doesn't even show it as an available update.
In ios simple tasks which is essential to everyone is addedas a feature in the latest update. Thats an irony. Many features which are upcoming in ios update are available on other OS since ages
Ok. The ads now on TH-cam, without capacity to skip - some longer than the item! Oh no, as I’m watching after an interminable ad, it is followed by another one! OMG, it’s 16 minutes!!!! This means I am not going to watch your video. Sorry!
Thanks Rich, proper job🇦🇺🦘👍🏼
Thanks so much!

Absolutely free - included in the new OS.
