      My electric bill seems pretty low when I compare it to other’s. I have a lot of plant lights and gadgets that companies send me to try but on average my bill is around $80 USD. Last summer it got up to $120 or so when I had the air conditioner running a lot

    I need advice about keeping basil alive indoors. I love it but my plants get bugs really quickly and then get weak and die eventually. The bugs are like little tiny flies.

    • @gardeningindoors
      @gardeningindoors  ปีที่แล้ว +29

      Do you think they're only dying due to pests? You could try incorporating an organic bio insecticide into your watering routine. I'm currently using Arber's Bio Insecticide and also spraying the leaves with it for pest prevention. Target just started carrying it but some other places, like Walmart, should have it as well.
      I also always keep my soil covered with aquarium gravel. I've been meaning to repost my Tiktok vids about there on here, but it helps prevent fungus gnats from getting in the soil and laying eggs.

    • @Lisa-nm8ij
      @Lisa-nm8ij ปีที่แล้ว +11

      These little flies are probably laying eggs and the larva eat the roots (in German: Trauermücken, in English probably Sciaridae). The flies need moist soil to lay the eggs.
      They get out of control if you overwater. So try to water the basil from the bottom.
      You could cover the soil with Quarz sand , so they can't reproduce. For me it worked with silica granulate (normally for hydroponic). But be sure there isn't a way for the flies to reach soil. Also (yellow) sticky traps to catch the flies. If that won't work, there are special parasites for the larva called nematodes.
      And don't get cheap soil to start with or bake it in the oven beforehand. It's often already infested with these little bastards.
      And they are a PAAAIN to get rid of.

    I have been Sprouting Broccoli seeds in my home for a little while now, but my last couple of batches have not sprouted. I am battling some Fruit Flies in my home and I am wondering if they are interupting the process. Would you be able to shed some light on this?
    Thanks in advance!

    • @gardeningindoors
      @gardeningindoors  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hi there! I don’t think fruit flies would keep the seeds from sprouting, but if a fruit fly lays eggs in your sprouting setup the larvae could be feeding on something in there. They’re bigger than fungus gnat larvae so shouldn’t be hard to see. I actually had fruit flies lay eggs in a microgreen sprouting tray before and spotted the larvae moving around.
      Could it be an issue with the seeds? If you’ve had them for a while it’s possible the germination rate has gone down.

    • @SteveHarmony3
      @SteveHarmony3 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@gardeningindoors Hey, thanks for your response! Ohok, that makes sense. Sorry to hear about that on your side, haha! I have not seen any larvae in the jar, but I have had the seeds for a little while. I also did think that might be the issue, but wasn't sure.
      I do have some other unopened seeds I'll try and see if that works.
      Would it be convenient and healthy for the seeds if I placed them in the fridge or outside after I rinse them?
      Thanks again!

    • @alexandramdinu
      @alexandramdinu ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hi! Here's how I do it:
      Step 1. Wash the seeds in the jar by pouring water and then drain the water
      Step 2. Pour fresh water and soak the seed for 3-4 hrs. After that you drain the water.
      Step 3. Position the jar inclined to a 45 degree angle to drain excess water
      Step 4. Fill jar with water and drain after 1-2 mins twice a day and always leave inclined at 45 degrees to drain water.
      Your sprouts will be ready to eat in 5-6 days depending on your liking.
      When the sprouts are done sprouting, put them on a paper towel and carefully tap excess water out of them. Place a paper towel in a glass container and put the sprouts in, cover with small piece of paper towel and put the lid on, leaving a small gap for sprouts to breathe and put in the fridge. If kept like this, you'll enjoy 5-6 days of sprouts.
      You can also freeze the sprouts :)
      PS: You'll need special mason jars with mesh lids to drain water, also a stand to position your jar on. If you have access to Amazon, search Sprouting jar kit and take the glass jars, they're the best in terms of sprouts.
      Your sprouts got mushy because the drainage is not good or you left them outside for longer than needed and did not wash them twice a day. If you do the method I wrote above, you'll be successful.
      Hope it was helpful!
      Happy sprouting 🌱

      @gardeningindoors  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That seems to be a common complaint. When I grew the ones in this video it was my first time growing sprouts and I later realized I probably didn't have those issues because there was a fan in that area giving the jar a little airflow. Here's the video from when I grew those, I think I rinsed them a couple more days than I was supposed to because I misread the instructions: www.tiktok.com/@gardeningindoors/video/7166422116592586026?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pc&web_id=7182356112883107374

      Plants from the hardware store shouldn't be an issue. It probably has to do with environmental factors, lack of nutrients or maybe even pot size. Peppers need bright light to flower/fruit, plant size can be impacted by pot size and a lack of nutrients will affect growth/fruit production. Then there's type of peppers lol I intentionally choose types peppers that are smaller than my thumb

    This is a bit misleading…I am a professional grower and most of these plants require grow lights, air circulation, disease control and possibly heating mats/devices growing them indoors. It is much easier to grow a tomato outdoors for the everyday person for example. They basically require greenhouse-like conditions indoors, but if you really really want to grow some of these things indoors, you can, they just require some money and skill. If you want to try any of these, regrowing green onions in water in a window are definitely the easiest option!

I didn't expect to go from 200 subs to nearly 80k within a couple weeks so I'm still in the process of getting more content on TH-cam. I grow everything shown in this video in my little apartment and the conditions are nowhere near greenhouse-like so it's definitely possible! It also really doesn't have to cost that much at all. It might do best with a grow light above it indoors. I tried growing lettuce with south-facing window light as a test and it got leggy. That was during the winter. I might retry it in the summer just to see if the longer summer days make a difference.
      Lettuce is fairly easy to grow once you have the lighting figured out. It's a cool weather crop so indoor temps are great and it seems like a plant that likes consistently moist soil. I would just let the top inch or 2 dry out before watering to prevent fungus gnats.

    I’m on day 3 of growing some alfalfa sprouts in a sprouting jar like you have. So far, so good.
    A few years ago, I tried to grow some other things in my apartment and…it didn’t go well. I have the space; I have a spare bedroom in the back but I think the problem is that what I planted couldn’t get enough light. So, you say peppers and dwarf cherry tomatoes don’t need a smart garden but don’t they need special grow lights if you’re in an apartment? I’ve been thinking quite seriously about getting a smart garden but I’m afraid I won’t pick the right brand and that I’ll go crazy with it and my place will start to look like a jungle.

      Smart gardens/hydroponics systems are kinda hard to shop for. I think it comes down to what type of plants you want to grow. A lot of those systems don't have enough space between each plant for you to realistically grow as many plants as they say it can hold. Some people just use them to get the plants started and then transfer to a pot or outside.

      You can just use chia seeds just mist them with water and secure the lid sit in a window

    Can you do a video or have any tips on not developing gnats or other bugs in the potting soil?

    • @gardeningindoors
      @gardeningindoors  ปีที่แล้ว

      I cover soil with aquarium gravel to prevent gnats. Some bugs can still make their way in though. You can water with something added to it for pest control like a bio insecticide, neem oil, hydrogen peroxide, some people add a little rubbing alcohol but I haven't experimented with that one yet. Identifying the pest helps with figuring out how to handle them because some products are ineffective on certain pests.
      I have a lot of plants in LECA, which doesn't provide an ideal environment for pests to live long term. I just have to worry more about foliage pests like spider mites and thrips

    What berries can I grow inside?

    • @gardeningindoors
      @gardeningindoors  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Depends how much space you have and your lighting situation. You can grow anything inside if you can provide the plants environmental needs. I have strawberry plants but the only ones doing good are in a hydroponics system and smart garden. I also have top hat blueberry plants but they're too young to know if they'll progress well indoors

    Do you have a separate room for plants?

      No. I’m in a studio apartment so the only separate room I have is a bathroom 🤣

      Chili plants are a good one. I have 3 of them but they must have been too small when I made this video, otherwise I would have included them

      @@gardeningindoors Thank you so much! I saw these before, however I could not remember where, and did not know the name, so I went to Lowe’s, however they did not know what I was referring to. Coincidentally I went to the $1.25 store and I saw something that looked very similar, however, I didn’t want to purchase the wrong thing. So thanks again! I will definitely subscribe.

    Do you have video on best way to grow lettuce indoors?

    • @gardeningindoors
      @gardeningindoors  ปีที่แล้ว

      I do not. I have a Click & Grow 25 that was designed for lettuce and leafy green production so that's what I typically use for that. Here's a link if you'd like to see what that is: www.clickandgrow.com/products/the-click-and-grow-25?sca_ref=1767817.y9OxoP9K9F
      I do plan on making a how to grow lettuce indoors vid at some point but I have to figure out what to do about lighting and space. It's fairly easy to grow from seed but you do need a grow light. I experimented with using south-facing window light and the plants got leggy. I think I have the leggy video uploaded to this account actually.

    Do you get bugs

    • @gardeningindoors
      @gardeningindoors  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sometimes but it's not because of specific plants. Pests just hitch a ride into homes on shoes, clothing, packages and then find a plant to live in. I check for pests often so if I see any I can treat the issue early on
