Previously, we built the interior load bearing wall for the boys bedroom wing. All 23 roof rafters were cut and installed and we framed the first exterior angular wall. Life was flowing as normal between the farm, build and work.... until it wasn't. We sustained an attack by a large predator that would throw our next week into a complete tail spin as we desperately tried to gain control of the situation.

We are a couple who are building our own home from the ground up in the mountains of West Virginia. We sustained brutal attacks this week. We have worked relentlessly to gain control of the situation and hope to have an update to you before the end of this week. Needless to say, the week started out as normal before taking a turn for the worst but we’re pushing ahead to ensure everyone is safe so we are able to return to building.

Oregon retired farmer here. We lost sheep to both a mountain lion and coyotes. The coyotes would leave remnants of the sheep and when it was a mountain lion the sheep would just be gone. My brothers (both hunters) said the mountain lions will cycle through an area every three weeks or so as well elk. Maybe get a pair of llamas?
@@bldfit46, Josh said they had a mountain lion about 8-9 months ago and they, guessing the game wardens were able to remove it.
You two need to write a book about time management and how to do it successfully. The way you can bounce from one job to another and pick up speed is overwhelming for most of us to comprehend how you do it. I've never seen anyone who can change hats so often and stay successful with their businesses until I saw you two. You two set the standard!
All while also filming and editing videos, as well as homeschooling their children. They're an unstoppable force for sure.

I just noticed Erin has retired her cowboy boots for a pair of tough work boots. I’m sure they are much more stable for her ankles and feet. Safety is so important when you are out lifting the weight they do building their home. I’ve been wearing Bombas socks and slippers for over a year. Very good products.
Guardian dogs are the only real protection. It's not if, but when a predator comes around 😢

Canadian here. We have lots of predators. My sister as a sheep ranch right up against the mountains and has a Great Pyrenees dog and sometimes two, as well as a boarder Collie . She does bring them into smaller paddocks at night but the Pyrenees stayed with the sheep always, and they have had very little predation from cougars, bears , cougars or coyotes. They are lovely , friendly dogs to people too.
Erin, you are wicked. You work as hard as any man. Josh is a lucky man.
Our ducks and chickens were raided by bobcats here in Florida they even took the guinea off our roof. My granddaughter’s wonderful husband is home from deployment and has secured everything he can. My great grandson closed the duck house door, I went over to check on it 4 days later and heard the babies inside, my 2 year older great grandson went in and got the 5 sweet babies. ❤

Don’t they have livestock guardian donkeys?
I made that suggestion a year ago. They got a guard goose. Then they got donkeys. I don't believe they want them. If it was me and I had sheep I would have guard dogs. It is very wooded there.

I am sorry that you lost one of your rams. We all know that you do your best to protect all of your critters. I hope that your strategy pays off and you can take whatever steps you need to eliminate the predator.

If you’re thinking about an LGD, check out the Sarplaninac, beautiful breed. We’ve got one crossed with a maremma. She doesn’t bark too much, unless she has a reason. Coyotes outside the fence at the house a few nights ago. They didn’t stick around for long. Great with kids and other animals. We’ll be adding a male to the pack soon.

Thermal scopes work wonders if you can bait the predator to a specific part of the field- then you will know what you are dealing with.
Good luck on that problem and nice to see the addition frame up getting near the end. Your experience on the metal roof from the first part of the house will really come in handy.

Things are moving along with the cafe and candle shop. Our family love the soaps and candles. We have some of the original candles with eschewed labels and I love that someone did that by eye and it’s not perfect, which makes it all the more wonderful. I have a crazy idea to send back the empty glass candle with its lid so perhaps you can reuse it. Just like recycling and keep everything green. Sometimes I hate farm life. Attacks are horrible and unpredictable.
Erin, all of today's appliances are designed so that, if need be, you can switch the hinges and the latches on the doors so they can open up either left to right, or right to left. You don't need to alter any plumbing or electrical work to make the appliance work right.
So sorry about the loss. I know that is your top priority to keep everyone safe. Blessings to you.

I have always wondered why you didn't have Shelties to help guard & keep those sheep & chickens more safe. But there are other larger dogs to get that too- will keep those livestock safe. 😉
Shelties are smart & great family dogs. Will bark right away & chase anything off - that should not be there. So sad losing that ram 🐏 & I know it made Ellie extra upset ...poor kiddos too. Erin, you may not be a photographer, but you're a dam good videographer, amongst numerous other things. (wife, builder, designer, cafe owner, farmer, school teacher.)
Growing up, my relatives raised chickens and turkeys. Like clock work, twice a year, they'd lose 3-4 birds in one evening. I volunteered to sleep on top of the chicken house. It was a few foxes that were eating the birds, until the shotgun went off, then they were dead foxes.
For you to have lost a year to a year and a half old ram, I'd say, coyotes. A mountain lion probably would have removed the kill with him or her. If the carcass were torn up into multiple pieces, it's probably coyotes that were fighting for their share.
I bet your kids know how cool their parents are 😂
So sorry for your loss. I to have lost sheep to cougars. Called the Fish & Game, they came out with tracking dogs. They found him down our lower trail. They explained to me that a Cougar will go for the throat. Coyotes go for the rear end. House is coming alone nicely. Hope you have a better week. Love & Prays to you and your animals.

You may want to look into a Kangal Shepherd dog for your animals. They are fearless with any preditor, including mountain lions, and the ideal dog for your situation...

Looks like you need to do your air tools a favor and drain you air compressor tank. Maybe even get get a small bottle of air oil and give a squirt before use

Not sure the type of game camera but hubby has spy point the pics go instantly to his phone on an app it's cool. You can do video or pics. Small fee but he loves not going every few weeks to pull memory cards ... good luck

That's the one awful thing about farm life. I've never liked the term "it comes with the territory," as if that's going to be a balm for the wounds the animals and humans suffer.
Where is this kitchen u r putting in? Maybe yr candle bldg?
So sad about the baby sheep. You might have to build a place for them to sleep in at night if it happens again, because here in Maine, wild animals can't be shot unless there is a designated hunting season for them, so that may be true too in West Virginia. Maybe you need to put some type of wiring along all the fencing. That might help.

Look inside the dryer door it may be reversible just like the refrigerator… there will be caps over the holes, tilt the washer forward pull the yellow tape strip off the washer back.. then tilt a little and abruptly set it down… washers are self leveling.

Get Dakota alarms, the base in the house lets you know when there is movement around we use ours to monitor for coyotes then move our cameras around that is if it’s not a camera that sends instant pictures

The donkeys are good alert animals, but livestock guardian dogs(at least 2!) would be your best defense!! They work in tandem and need a buddy for truly effective guarding!!
Dryer doors can be opened usually in both directions. Just like the fridge!
