I struggle with technology. So much that I've almost lost my job. The "need to do it because I've been wanting to do it all day" mindset or the "I'm not on my phone all the time", or the classic "I see you on your devices all the time, why can't I be on mine?" All of these are examples of why I've been struggling to stay alive today. I get this mindset that I have to be satisfied with something that holds me back from living life. I want to change who I am, and not become something I don't.
Like any tool, technology requires guidance and training. We don't let our kids roam the streets by themselves, but we let them search the internet freely. By learning how technology works we can put some gates up to protect our kids. Scary, but interesting video.
This presentation is almost a decade old. Nowadays, these problems have only gotten worse. Technology addiction is rampant and it pains me to see our youth being distracted by the virtual world while completely ignoring real life. Where will we be in ten years?
I was so badly addicted to social media. I learnt I had to give it up all together. It was freaking hard!! Worse than when I gave up alcohol (I drank veeery heavy) :/
I think he didn’t say “right now” enough and That confused me a lot...”when is he talking about?!” Was the question I constantly had. Also, top notch camera work lad.
The situation is getting worse, we need to have workshops that include this for new parents during birthing class or something....Thank you in 2015 trying to create awareness on this.
Totally agree. I deleted my Instagram account a month ago, and I've never ever been happier! The only one left is Voicely, but it makes me feel better and helps with anxiety a lot.
this boy acting like adults arent obsessed either. man, im less obsessed with social media than alot of people. i only have youtube and snapchat, which has their notifs off, and youtube is usually for stuff ike this or background sound while i draw and such. but like, hes saying its only kids, no. the kids arent gonna change if their parents are obsessed too.
Scary.....Mom and Dad need to get a grip on themselves first...set the example and set hard boundaries for their children. Their children will love them for it later on.
Hypocrits... Change your behavior first. Talking about internet addiction and wearing smartwatch with instant reminders at the same time. Children copy parents behavior, if you want your child to be active - be active. Go cycling, camping, hiking, fishing, etc. not just because of the children, but because you love it and enjoy it. And they will do the same.
ever hear the expression "do as i say not as i do"? everyone's reliant on technology if he can't help himself he might as well try to help other people, plus it's easier to listen to another person than it is to listen to yourself
All these people laughing at the capture and containment of the human brain from infancy makes my heart sink. It isn't funny. It's tragic and terrifying.
I was thinking about similar recently and made something on here about societies addiction to screens, myself included. To see it just type in search bar above the following title....'Addicted to a screen'
Love what you're seeing? For more on this, I'd suggest a book with analogous content. "A Life Unplugged: Reclaiming Reality in a Digital Age" by Theodore Blaze
We have had students where we have to intervene and report because they are falling asleep in school, due to playing on their Ipads, laptops, phones, etc. all night long. TAKE THEM AWAY AT NIGHT!
Does anyone here have any advice for me? I am the child, and my mum either sleeps most of the day or is watching go or on her iPad. My sister sleeps until 4:00am playing games, and that leaves me with not much to do, so I go on my iPad. I want to go outside because my sister and I are a little overweight, but she hates the outside and walks, so I stay inside. I can’t go on a walk on my own because my mum is kinda over protective and doesn’t let me, and I can’t exactly go on my own without being noticed. If anyone has any advice that would be great, thanks 💕😔
I feel so sad for you! Perhaps you could ask your mom to sit down and watch this Tedtalk video with you and tell her how you feel. I am a mother and this would absolutely make me think and change my behavior. I wish you the best.
Well I know a thing or two about stubborn people talk to your mom no matter how much she doesn't want to hear it no matter how angry she gets don't let her hear the end of it people don't wanna hear that they are wrong but that is the way you can get through to her
I don't like the scare mongering tone, but it's also clear this is an important issue for parents. I just wish the title was clear this was about parenting because I don't have kids and I'm being stressed out about things other people are doing that I have no control over.
You can pray to god to free you from tech addiction. I did. But i understand if thats not a choice most people would make. We are all victims of forces beyond our control.
I’m sorry but he spent way too much time just stating facts about children using technology, we already know that. He really spent all that time essentially saying the same thing and not saying anything all at the same time.
tbh technology is a massive part of society now you see it everywhere you go so either way a child will always be curious and want to explore what it is yeah you can go on family activities and stuff but that wont stop them from using technology i mean he's using a projector to show his presentation ffs so that says it all really 😂
The parents are who buy the device... I don't understand how you think this is very informative. But, this new generation is very stubborn and you show a clear example of it. He provided statistics and reasons to stop this it's a shame you don't see the issue here.
@@IWasGivenRest There are many benefits to technology at the same time, however. I do agree that there does need to be more awareness about the dangers and addictive qualities of technology.
Not all he said it’s sad. And not what’s sad it is completely. We can’t, we must not avoid the change. We can, we must, chose case by case. I know it’s cryptic but it’s what it is. If you think different you wrong my man.
First World Problems. Your life could be worse. Okay, he still makes good points. However, let's look at one positive outcome of people being hooked to their devices. They talk less, therefore your space is much quieter. Does anyone see this as positive, besides me? Ha ha. If a child is on their phone all the time, well, that at least lets you monitor their whereabouts. But, he still makes some good points. Really, it's as if people are evolving towards the virtual world.

how's it going?
Why is the audience laughing when he states real statistics? Sad
Plus he's talking about small children being exposed to the noxious microwave radiation of smartphones and wifi.
*they were laughing at memes on their phones*
nokomis mn what happens with that?
They're uncomfortable
Sometimes laughter is how we process shame

The "right nows" were impactful and relevant and appropriate. That was an AWESOME talk.
Thanks for sharing! As people in our community know, technology addiction IS VERY REAL.
Who filmed this? Great talk, but the slides are kinda the point of TED, don't you think?
I was so badly addicted to social media. I learnt I had to give it up all together. It was freaking hard!! Worse than when I gave up alcohol (I drank veeery heavy) :/

Bravo Bravo ! Thank you so much for sharing this.

Good presentation but why we don't see the slides?
Sometimes, the cameraman zooms in to his face (the speaker)

Yup
He was talking about adults...
Adults are in a smartphone trance the dont see clearly

The problem is the the adults are addicted too
Yes! thats why I'm here.... But also need some more relevant solutions
Seek help online there are plenty of resources. It's only one Google search.
6 years later. We didn't do anything about it yet. 😣
All these people laughing at the capture and containment of the human brain from infancy makes my heart sink. It isn't funny. It's tragic and terrifying.
I don't think he meant this to be funny. Cause it's not. Notice he was very serious.
Yeah these folks misread the situation lol
Need one of these for adults....
I was thinking about similar recently and made something on here about societies addiction to screens, myself included. To see it just type in search bar above the following title....'Addicted to a screen'
I am a sensitive person and just realised my siblings have no childhood...
I don't understand what's bad about esports tournament....
we are a zombie generation
I hate technology. I wish we could all just get rid of it all.
Technology will be our downfall I'm in addiction specialist
There goes adulthood.
Disappointed in the crowd's laughing

Great speech and INTERESTING angle for making the video...lol!

has your situation improved?
Right now right now right now
Good talk but he could have made it much more powerful with some Anaphora.
I’m watching this because I play too much games, and I’ve been playing way too much vr lately. Really need to get better
too many "right nows.." but I get the point
I don't like the scare mongering tone, but it's also clear this is an important issue for parents.

I wish I didn't grow up with smart phones and videogames and stuff
It’s sad how it is effecting the youth but it’s also adults now a days “right now “😂
Where is the ACTUAL solution to limit ones exposure (addiction)?
I don´t get people in the audience who laugh. This is only really sad and bad thing.
Well done Mister Ben🙏👍
Accurate
I'm watching this at 2 am I've been on youtube for 2 hours
Oh my gosh you're just like me :/ I do the same thing. :(
Both of you will poor your health .
Just always rest your eyes from using devices.
I didn't even know what a iPhone was when I was a infant.
So if you have an addiction you should just choose to quit. Not the best advice IMO
They are laughing but it is really not funny.
I’m sorry but he spent way too much time just stating facts about children using technology, we already know that. He really spent all that time essentially saying the same thing and not saying anything all at the same time.
Very cool.
I feel like I’m seeing through the matrix, like he’s waking me up
We have met the enemy, and he is us.
Good talk!
Wow, 9 years ago...at the time of this comment
I bike for 2 hours a day
Is that laughter I hear, or guilt?

So sad ....not funny. Marketing at a child’s mind expense.
I have an idea to make posters to help in this case. Anyone else think so?
that was depressing

Ok, 3 minutes out of 12 enumerating facts... we get it, reality is terrible but 1 minute intro is more than enough

Why are all the people laughing?
Not all he said it’s sad. And not what’s sad it is completely. We can’t, we must not avoid the change. We can, we must, chose case by case.
I know it’s cryptic but it’s what it is. If you think different you wrong my man.
Ok, so it's a whole video of enumerating facts... so pointless
Good content but, he is only reading the presentation. I think he could get through the topic more specifically.
I know repetition is a rethoric devicd but if you say "right now" once again i cant promise not to punch you
The laughing is infuriating
K boomers
Very long and irrelevant introduction.
