    the worst thing about auto configuring stuff, they almost never have a fallback so the user can configure it if anything goes wrong.

    • @ivoivanov7407
      @ivoivanov7407 3 ปีที่แล้ว +77

      This! Give the user a way to bypass the automagic config. I've spend last week trying to connect an old VGA-only monitor to a not-that-old gtx 1070. Tried almost all possible combinations of port/converter, and all the time video card was sure I'm connecting HD-TV via DVI-D port, no matter where actually monitor was plug in. Until, finally, got the right DP-to-VGA cable. Only if I had a way to tell "please, output 1920x1080@60Hz to port X"...

      @walkinmn 3 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      This! It's a very common issue nowadays every company tries to make everything to configure, detect or change according to the environment automatically and remove (or hide) all that they can for manual configuration or user intervention . They have the idea that everything should work but the real world is very different, there's always bugs, glitches, etc. And things should be designed accordingly. The tech world needs a change of philosophy about this, there should always be a way to change settings or bypass an automated configuration when necessary because the real world is messy and their position about this only adds complications when not everything works perfectly

      Typical of technology. It introduces a new paradigm that becomes the standard and when it malfunctions there isn't always a way to go back. Like all the "paperwork" at my job, soon as the network is down it is like mass chaos and everything slows way down which sucks, because patient care and expectations of healthcare delivery operate on current workflow standards dictated by technology, and are therefore usually so much faster and smoother than old paper charts and physician orders.

      @@LasseHuhtala Technology is an arms race, for lack of a better term. The moment someone restricts something, someone else figures out a way around it. We have to bypass HDCP due to Apple MACs always outputting it, regardless of the content. This will lead to them not being able to stream AV over the various AV systems we build. So the manufactures of commercial grad AV routing gear just added a way to bypass it. Its really fucking silly.

      It really is terrible. It got a lot better lately but I still have issues with some of my components. So I bought a Harmony remote. And LG, with all their intelligence, doesn't allow CEC to be disabled on my BluRay player. So sometimes the player comes on by itself and then turns off because it receives the signal from the remote. Frustrating. But if I disable it on Harmony so the TV can power it on by itself, it won't come on 50% of the time.

    • @lordeilluminati
      @lordeilluminati 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Rakumei672 this is not cec, it is the magic remote functionality of newer LG models, CEC respond to HDMI signals, this converts the remote itself to an universal one that you can use on multiple devices. Disable the "Automatic Device Detection" and if you want, the HDMI CEC too. My remote was set to the set top box, but everytime I connected my Xbox One it would pick up and forget the set top box settings and I had to manually set again to make the remote work again for my mom to watch TV because the television itself doesnt see this set top box as a known device like the Xbox One, now it doesnt happen anymore.

    Quick memo from germany, at REWE (like hannaford or Wallmart) you have the option to selfs-scan items when you place them in your cart/bag and then checkout with everything in the cart/bag in one go, system is called „scan&go“ but you need a „payback“ account to use it, but then:
    - use smartphone to unlock a „scan&go“ scanner
    - walk through the store, scan items the moment you take them from the shelf, place items in cart/bag
    - connect „scan&go“ scanner to self-check-out register, pay with smartphone (apple/ google pay)
    - walk to car or home

    Self checkout here in Sweden are pretty good. You just need to scan the items and then put them in the bag. Once all items are scanned you pay for them and move out. It's actually nice using them because I cut the time by a lot instead of being in a normal queue.

    • @griffithchung9377
      @griffithchung9377 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In theory that's how they're supposed to work here in North America too. In practice, you're lucky if you manage to get through the whole scanning process without the machine's built-in scale either failing to detect an item you've scanned and put into the bag or detecting some weight that isn't there, either of which forces you to stop and wait around like an idiot until a human employee can come around and override the error. Are your Swedish machines calibrated so much better than the ones they installed here? If so, we need some of them in my local supermarket immediately.

    • @Zefar77
      @Zefar77 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@griffithchung9377 There are 2 types of them. But neither rely on weight to check what you've scanned.
      The first type just needs you to show the items bar code to the scanner to make it scan the item.
      The times something needs to be checked is if you bought an item that is age restricted or if you bought a lot of items. Then a worker will come over to scan a few items and it'll be done.
      But as long as you've done neither of those things you just need to scan the items and put them in a bag.
      Then pay with your creditcard and you can leave with the receipt that you need to open the gates with.
      The other type, which I like more, lets you get a personal hand scanner with the store card for that store, that you carry around the store. With this you scan all of the items you need to buy and can put it in a bag right away.
      As before if you buy an age restricted item or if it's a bit too many items a worker will come over once you need to pay for it to scan a few of the stuff to see that it's valid.
      To pay for the stuff with the hand scanner, you put it back into one of the slots for a hand scanner and use your store card again.
      Then you pay for it with your own creditcard and can now leave with the receipt that you need to open the gates with.

      @@Zefar77 Thanks for the wonderfully detailed explanation. What you describe in Sweden is so elegant and straightforward I could cry. Unfortunately, its apparent reliance on a basic honor system leaves me with no hope whatsoever that US storeowners would ever even consider enacting such a system. Perhaps there are tighter security measures in place beyond what you mentioned, but it sounds as though your stores generally trust their customers to act in good faith, and have determined that whatever small amount might be lost because of laxer security is a price worth paying in exchange for providing a positive shopping experience to those customers.
      Retailers in this country have made the exact opposite calculation. Profit margins for grocers here are very thin at the best of times, so theft prevention is something of an obsession to them, to the point that they've decided they're okay with inconveniencing their customers a bit so long as it stops even a little unpaid merchandise from escaping the store. Combine that with the general deficit of social trust we operate under compared to what you're probably used to in Scandinavia, and I just can't imagine a world in which retailers here will ever feel anything other than nausea at the thought of members of the public taking items off the shelf and dropping them directly in their own bag without some form of direct human or technological supervision to ensure they were scanned and paid for correctly.

    4:09 Um, we have found a way that makes self checkouts not suck. The store I go to allows me to scan my purchases as I'm pulling them out of the shelves with an app of theirs on my phone and at the checkout I can transfer all the scanned data to the register in a matter of seconds. The usual time I spend at the checkout is 20-30 seconds tops, if I'm not buying something alcoholic where my age needs to be verified by an employee, and I can scan my groceries while I'm walking from one thing to the next one and put them into my bags right then and there.
