SAIKI's vocal effects are usually done by フッくんFu-kun (who has been in charge of mixing at BAND-MAID for a long time) in the mixing booth. I actually heard that song several times at their shows so far, and on two of those occasions I was right behind the mixing booth. And during that long tone, I saw the veteran engineer, Fu-kun, repeatedly hitting one of the many buttons on the control board (probably the mute button). He always does an excellent job without even operating the mixing board in detail, hardly touching it, or even feeling the tension. And on that occasion, he seemed to be very familiar with it. He sat down comfortably, casually reached for the buttons, and lightly tapped in succession to change the tone. I didn't feel like he was concentrating on that at all. Seeing that, I couldn't help but laugh. LOL
In Miku's head: "Matchless" = One and Only "GUM" = Sticky - stick together Miku explains it here: Music Voice Interview (14/11/2016) ――What is the origin of the title of the third track "matchless GUM"? Miku: "Matchless" means "one and only", but when it has become "matchless GUM" it starts to mean "stick together, don’t break up". As the lyrics feel cuter than the other songs, it is more about "Thinking about our relationship.", and saying "Stick around and please don’t leave." ――You expressed it as “GUM”? Saiki: That was the concept. “Stick together” and you expressed it as… chewing gum (laughs). Miku: But it was only a little thing, Kobato wrote many other things Sai was OK with. ―― ”matchless GUM”’s lyrics are a collaboration between Miku and Saiki then? Miku: It's a collaboration, but it's a mysterious collaboration. I always write the songs alone, then I show what I wrote and get my orders. “You want to change this part here, this portion here is useless!” she says, getting out her teacher’s red pen-ppo. ――You are corrected? When “This portion here is useless” is said, does Saiki rewrite? Miku: There are times when she will not write it-ppo! ――She only says “No!”? Saiki: “This is not the right answer!” (laughs). Miku: So then I send her lines which don’t match the melody at all-ppo! I say “I want to put this line here!”. Saiki: Pretending to make it short. Miku: It gets me feeling like getting a challenge like "Summarise a novel in this number of characters-ppo!" ―― Don’t you say “Saiki-san you write it!”? Miku: Say “You write it” and scold her-ppo? Saiki: (laughs) After all, she’s great with words, you can entrust it to her and it will go forward smoothly. Miku: It’s done like this-ppo. Like this, we go round in circles a lot.
Look it has to be said. Is there now, or ever has been, a band even remotely close to Band Maid, where EVERY SINGLE SONG ( in volume- over 140 ) hits home and hits home HARD!?
One could argue that Maid in Japan does not. However, it would be much harder to argue that they hit for over 90% starting from New Beginning, then in the 95-100% range after Alone. I do not know any band that comes remotely close to that. 75% at most for the "legends"...
The soundscape on this song is phenomenal - a wall of sound at times but where you can still hear everything and the live version takes it up another level. At the same time there are those moments of rest and softness. Sheer genius. And of course today we have the new single and video. Can't wait to hear that one live.
Must admit Matchless Gum is my guilty Band-Maid pleasure. From Saiki's most badass 1-2-3-4 count in rock and roll history to Miku tossing her head to the side while singing "love me baby'.
This is more proof that Band-Maid does not have filler tracks. Every song, A-side, B-side, and all album tracks are songs that they stand behind and may be played live in concert on any given night.
First time I heard Matchless Gum I was blown away. This song is a great example of how the Maids write songs that reach us as perfect classic rock but with their insanely heavy creative twist at the same time. You can't help but be impressed. By the way that phrase means "It's too late, your all I think of".
This song is incredible! I like the swinging guitar sound. The choppy vocal effect is probably just someone tapping a mute or kill switch. The Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 okyuji that this video is from just might be the best audio mix that Band-Maid has ever produced. It is a shame that only an hour of the show has ever been released. I would love to see the rest of it but seeing no sign of it after all these years have passed surely means that there is no chance of that happening.
Matchless Gum is one of my permanent top 10 Bandmaid songs. But only this live version with the intro with shrieky repeating noise. You can't project the same feel in the studio.
For that vocal muting, mixing boards have been programmable even before the digital age of hard drive recording. So yeah, on and off muting and since Band Maid uses a click track, you can use it sync lights, mix changes and even effects like that mute/unmute pattern. As far as the title, Miku said Matchless Gum = a relationship with incomparable sticking power. 👍
Just before the Just Bring It album, they released the single YOLO which included this and three other songs: Yolo, Matchless Gum, Unfair Game and an instrumental version of YOLO. This single is my most treasured CD I own. You just have to react to the other two; YOLO and Unfair Game. THEY ARE GOOD!!!
Sohum, do you agree that the group’s versatility and musicianship is unparalleled in these times. All these transitions and fills by Akane, support by Misa make Band Maid very unique. They don’t do a showcase, they do songs.
: I get psychogenic shivers with nearly every Band-Maid song. It’s like a music-drug they fiendishly inject into their music to keep you addicted… in a good way, of course. The first couple that come to mind at this moment are: Matchless Gum - the classical-like passage with that hunting chorus pedal and low bass effect just after the solo - especially the last two chords with the counter bass notes. It’s chilling; and second, the way Saiki soulfully attacks the first word “ I “ in the last lines of the official Choose Me MV, “I cannot wait forever…” combined with the raw, tribal drum and funky bass pulls. Pure rock phrasing. She only does it in the official MV. Thx, Sohum!
When I first heard it three years ago it blew my mind. It was the "A-HA" moment when I realized they could do whatever they wanted, and do it better than anyone ! 🤯

Not enough love for 'Matchless Gum'. Thank you! And yup, the Stutter Effect is just spamming the In/Out Button on her Channel. It's on the Studio Version as well.
MATCHLESS GUM is Miku's way of comparing a couple that is extremely close with the idea that they are like gum ! Completely absorbed into one another...A deeply sultry imagery presented perfectly by Saiki ! 🥵

For me this is Kanami's dirtiest solo and I love the hell out of it.

Such an underrated song. Love Mincho's guitar on this.

Every time I hear this song… it’s this performance of Sai-chan I think about. 👹

I'm sure you're accurate. My explanation is kinda sorta a similar idea. I read it somewhere by someone who must not understand Japanese nuance. 🤔👍
Regarding the vocals: From an interview:
Kanami: Also, Saiki’s long tone is beautiful, so I wanted to make a melody that makes the most of it.
🤘😎🤘🔥
Sultry 😳🥵🌡️
Sip this ---> 🍹😎
💜💛❤💙💚
With Unfair game these two B sides are among my top 25 for sure!
👍
Such a satisfying song 😍😍
This CD just crazy good/Yolo, Matchless Gum, Unfair Game.

And to think this was a "B-side".
I wish the ending guitar solo / outro went on for another 10 minutes at least. Why why why why did it end so quickly??????
Damn. Have you just been sitting on this for months, or jack-o-lanterns in January?
lol its just a blanket to block out the sunlight
