This New Jeep Gladiator Is Proof That You Don't Need To Break The Bank To Buy A Great 4x4 Truck!

  • Trucks are getting more and more expensive by the year, but there are still some affordable options - especially if you're willing to spec a manual transmission. While the Jeep Gladiator Rubicon is definitely a pricey truck, something like the Sport model proves you don't have to break the bank to get a good off-road capable rig.

      How is the upshift from 2nd to 3rd? Are the ratios between these gears reasonable? One reviewer said that the ratio is way to large. Meaning, even under hard acceleration, bringing 2nd gear to redline, the engine/rpms drop significantly going into 3rd killing all acceleration.

    I used to own a '97 Jeep TJ w/manual. It didn't have lockers or a selectable front sway bar. With help from a buddy, installed a RC 3" lift and 33" Duratracs. Also installed a big-man extension for drivers seat. The TJ was amazing off-road. You don't need lockers to go off-road. The Gladiator Sport is a relative good value. Throw on a leveling kit, wheels and 33s and you have a very capable jeep, which fits 90% of the buyers out there.

    First off, I like Jeep, I’ve bought a couple new Jeeps over the years. But when I needed to trade an Ext Cab 4x4, Z71, Colorado in, for a Crew cab 4x4, midsize truck because we both retired and needed only one vehicle. We truly wanted a Gladiator. So we went out for over a month, test driving them all. What did we end up with? A new Colorado Crew Cab,4x4, V6. Since we had a 21’ 4,000 ÿlbs travel trailer and were thinking about getting a bigger trailer, we needed the extra capacity the Colorado gives. But the biggest issue at the time was price! When the Gladiator was first released, there were no discounts! A new hardtop, automatic with the HD Tow Package was no less than 40k! That as nice as they are drive nothing like a Colorado! Especially the steering and brakes! Plus the one feature available on all Colorados, that’s not available on any buy the highest most expensive models of the competition. That is the OnStar 4 G LTE WIFI, that also comes with a very easy to use and fast acting 7” touch screen with Apple Car Play! All options available for the WT trim, like 26” alloy wheels, bright trim, color matched bumpers, mirrors and door handles, cruise control, factory tow package with brake controller. Plus complete skid plate package, all with an 84 month 100,000 miles bumper to bumper warranty, all for 33k! That’s turned out to be very comfortable and able to tow up to 6,500 lbs with ease. So far up to only 20,000 trouble free miles over 16 months. My only regret is a diesel would have towed with even more ease, but slower.

    I ended up buying a Gladiator Rubicon because of the off roading I do. After I used the Jeep configuration tool with the items I liked, the Gladiator was still close to $46. For a couple grand more on the MSRP, it was a better buy on the Rubicon. The Rubicon had more standard options than the Sport S and of course, the mods to make it my own. I test drove a manual JKU a long time ago and didn't like the long clutch pedal travel. Being shorter, I would have to adjust the seat closer to the dash than I liked. Off road, automatic every time! These Jeeps are still expensive regardless of which model but having the top off is priceless enjoyment. You can't do that with any other truck.

  • @Forestdawg1791
    @Forestdawg1791 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Jeep is offering some good discounts too on the gladiator which help drive down the price. Didn’t hear it mentioned but these come standard with the Dana 44 axles which you can’t get outside the rubicon on the Wrangler. If you can get past the styling it’s a good truck.

    The lower trim models make sense if you are not going to do any super heavy offroading but once you start needing to add lockers and/or switch out axles to compensate for the increase in tires it gets real expensive real quick. I thought there was a trick with adding the max tow package on those to get the 7500 tow limit which automatically gave you the heavy duty Dana 44 in front and back. Can you not get those with the manual?

    If you are not looking for a manual or Rubicon, the sport max tow is the way to go. You get Rubicon axles, 4:1 transfer case, larger alternator, larger cooling fan, highest tow capacity, and payload. It is like a Rubicon without the lockers and sway bar disconnect. Although, you do get a limited slip rear diff. You can get a base Gladiator with max tow for $36,800. Of course that is sticker and you can easily get a them $1000 under invoice.

    The max tow package comes with the bigger axles. Throw in a couple lockers, lower gears, bigger tires, and a quick disconnect sway bar and bam. But that’s rubicon money right there.

    I agree with Andre. They need to move that top roll over bar back a bit and let the driver seat go back a bit more with longer and narrower speakers not those wide ones. Heck I take no no removeable top because of that issue I think allot of us have cause we have longer legs than torsos unlike Nathan. 😂

  • @nicholassmith7048
    @nicholassmith7048 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The issue with the manual is that it only has six speeds compared to the eight speeds in the automatic. In order to get a similar gear ratio spread, the ratios in the manual are further apart, which affects performance and fuel economy, especially when paired to the 3.6L, which is fairly low in torque. Therefore to get the most out of the 3.6, it's best to go with the eight-speed automatic.

There are a lot of deals out there now. I rather have the Wrangler 4xE with the horse power and torque it has. Now lets get the price.

    So I had a rusting out XJ Cherokee, I wanted the Gladiator, a Sport, or Sport S. the I deiced on the Sport S it has powered windows. But No Jeep Dealers in the Chicago Metro had any with the manual, or any models under ~$41K. But I had went to check out a Tacoma Sport with a manual and I like the shifting better then the Jeep, and the Toyota dealer gave me $4k under MSRP! I'm really happy with it! the Space in the back of the Jeep is nicer but for the cheaper price which not any Jeep dealers in my area were willing to negotiate about price, and that Toyota just has a better reputation of maintenance then Jeep I'm glad I got the Tacoma. I'm not gonna go out to a trail often (besides a camping trip) and we don't get much warm Sunny days here either. So sadly the Tacoma turned out to be the better truck for me.
    the Jeep Gladiator had a better telescoping steering wheel then the Tacoma. But when I tried to use all the leg room in the Gladiator I would kinda tap that cross bar with my head. I have no headroom issues sitting in the front of the Tacoma.

    Hey TFL I’m interested to see if you guys can do a test on the more evenly priced Gladiator Sport-S with any midsize truck you choose to see how it does off-road for the buyers that do occasional off-roading I know the rubicon is the top dog but that thing is closer to 60k how about a Sport-S against a Ranger off-road or zr2 even a Tacoma TRD offroad at least the prices on those will be more evenly MATCHED! Thank you

  • @highpower3006

    I drove the Gladiator and the lack of driver seat legroom was a deal breaker for me. I picked up a '21 Tacoma TRD Off Road Access cab W/rear locker & crawl control and the automatic transmission for 37K, so just a couple grand more than a base Gladiator. The power front seat goes back far enough so that I don't feel cramped after driving for more than ten minutes.

    I’m glad I got my ‘19 Tacoma TRD Off Road 6 Speed Manual after seeing this. Although I did have to order it and waited 4 months for it I only paid $36k, MSRP was $37k. Almost $4k less than this Jeep AND(!!!) I got a rear locker, A-Trac and a towing capacity of about 6,400lbs. Much better value and Toyota reliability. I love my truck.
