    First off, let's get something out of the way. Taylormade bought Adams Golf, who had a line of DHY and Super DHY clubs they called either hybrids or driving irons. They were similar to what Taylormade is putting out now. They were also sold as better player driving irons, but were just great clubs. I never did understand that marketing, but it's been an approach adopted by the new owners.
    That said, a while back, I switched to utility irons to replace my 4 and 5. They clearly out-performed the irons in my set, but I still didn't have enough gap between the 4 and 5, so replaced the 4 utility with a hybrid. I love the 5 utility and considered getting the 6 as well, but I actually hit the 6 iron pretty well. Whatever you call them, long iron replacements, utilities, or driving irons, they definitely have a potential place in a bag.

    You have a very good point. 7 & 6 hybrids exist so it's a pity T.M didn't do these as replacements for the equivalent irons.

    I stopped using the driving irons long ago.
    I use a 3 and 4 hybrid and also an 18° 5 wood.
    Forgiving and more consistent for me. 👍🏽

    Brillian video, Andy. Funnilly enough, I had a full bag fitting a few months back. I replaced my 5 and 6 Irons with a 5 Hybrid and a 5 (Fairway Wood). I have equal distance or gapping through my clubs. The clubs you are describing are very similar to the clubs known as Cleveland Launchers. The Cleveland won the day for distance when I had my fitting, but that distance was less than a club length. So I chose TaylorMade Stealth Irons 7,8,& 9, and TaylorMade Stealth 43° Pitching Wedge and a 54° Sand Wedge. I didn't like the look of the Cleveland on the ground. My favourite two of the day, was my Ping G Le 2 Driver, and my Odyssey White Hot 0G7 Putter.

    This isn’t exactly on point but I bought a 7 wood a while back to replace my hybrid and now you can take it from my cold dead hands 😂. I can hit it 210-215 off the box but it goes high and stays on the course 95% of the time. The loft is also such that even if I get a little fat it still has a great flight. Its just a million times easier than hitting 5i out of the box for me anyway.
    While I’ve moved away from the hybrid style irons as I’ve gotten better I still play a chipper, all woods (no hybrids), and a high moi putter. It seems a bit silly for us weekend warriors to not make golf as easy as we can.

    Great review and great advice on building blended iron sets. I just recently bought a new set of irons from Taylormade. For my long irons (4 and 5) I went with Stealth DHY irons, mid irons (6,7 and 8) P790's and short irons (8, 9 and PW) P7MC's. It does mean I carry two 8 irons but the difference in technologies and lofts between the P790's and P7MC's gave me the gapping I needed without resorting to bending heads.

    You make some really good point Andy. What they made are really just game improvement irons but chose to market them a different way - which makes sense really. I also get your point on gaping. As my CH speed has started to drop off my distances between some clubs, especially the longer irons and even hybrids, has started to narrow. So I have been practicing varying my shots, similar to what you might do with a wedge, to get different distances out of the same iron eliminating some clubs from my bag all together. That Crossfield guy did a video on it just the other day. It really has me thinking on how I want to approach my upcoming purchase of new irons and hybrids. Really good video mate.

    The cost of a full set of these would be close to $2000 (dollars US), which would put them out of reach for so many. Interesting, Adams Golf, purchased by Taylormade, had this hybrid type set up years ago. Cleveland also makes a similar set at a much lower cost. I can't see spending that kind of money Taylormade would ask for these considering where they have the two current models prices set.

  • @anthonyfarmer8387
    @anthonyfarmer8387 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not sure I agree Andy. The genius is selling a super game improvement club, through clever marketing, at £200+! You said it yourself, they would have to change the label and sell them as premium super game improvement if they sold a set (maybe their marketing guys could invent a new category,,,,). Could you test the TM DHY 5 iron vs Wilson Launchpad and/or Cleveland Launcher clubs of similar loft to see if the performance difference justifies the price? I’m sticking with my hybrids.

    Never discount Taylormade to seek out a money making opportunity. It's likely they will do this if they get enough people commenting on it. I mean they made all those sets of Tigers irons and 99% of the guys buying them can't even hit them so it was really just for nostalgia and they charged 2K per set. @christianvachon2235 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Interesting! IThis is my personal opinion, but the mistake is modern strong lofts. That is why long irons no longer work. Most 7 irons are now 4 to 6 degrees stronger than traditional lofts and this in my humble opinion is the real issue. A 7 iron now has the loft of a traditional 6 iron, or a 5 and 1/2 iron even. I can still hit a traditional lofted 2 iron off the tee and be fine. But with modern lofts, I can't.
    I personally think a lot of issues could be solved by making the newer style game improvement irons but with traditional lofts instead of power-bat lofts. You would get the benefits, but could still find long irons normal.
    An example, When you see someone like Jon Rahm use a driver (11 degrees), 3W (16 degrees) and 5W (at 18+ degrees) but his 4 iron has a traditional loft so 23-24 degrees so its workable.
