My ancestors ran the St, George Hotel in the 1800,s. Actually my grandmother was born on the second floor room on the far right. That room is called Hells Delight and there is a photo of my great grandparents there. The hotel and Whiskey Flat Saloon is supposed to be haunted, in fact I have some spooky stories from staying alone there in the hotel. Loved your video! Happy birthday 🎂🎈🎉!
Sorry Sara I gotta correct you here. I only do this because I was in the Marines Corps. Brigadier General Liversedge was only a commanding officer of the 28th Regiment. He didn't participate in or even give the order to take the hill and raise the flag. That order came from Lieutenant Colonel Chandler W. Johnson who was the commanding officer of the 2nd Battalion which is part of the 28th Regiment (BTW he was KIA on Iwo Jima a couple of days later). The 28th had 3 battalions that General Liversedge was in command of.
Thank you, Wonderhussy. I know this area well. My cousin still lives in Pine Grove. My folks lived up the road in Pioneer. The area has a lot of history. Volcano also had local theater group called the Claypipers. They played the old mela-dramas. I love this area.❤😊
Wonderhussey I grew up in the 1960s in Coloma California right across the river from Sutter's Mill. If you drive across the bridge, it's a one-way Bridge. Stay to your left as you go over the bridge and follow the road around until you come to a house with a detached garage in a roundabout driveway. It's locked up now because it's state property. Love and miss that old place. When crossing the bridge if you turn right you go to the Whites Store and some apartments that we first stayed in when we moved there. The whites were a family that owned that property. Karen White used to babysit us. Awesome times. The building before you cross the bridge has an old cannon in front of it. I used to sit on that can and waiting for Mr Ball to come pick us up in the bus for school.
Daffodils grow from individual bulbs. They are spring flowering, but all the foliage is gone by Sept and the bulbs are dormant. What you showed growing is Iris. They grow from rhizomes that dont form bulbs, but multiply each year and you can divide them and replant. Similar looking to a ginger rhizome. The Iris has already bloomed too, later than daffodils , but retain the foliage until frost.
Thank you, your travel vlogs are like getting whisked away by your best friend because you have been hiding in your house for far, far too long. Happy Birthday!
Harry Liversedge was not in the Iwo Jima photo, he was the commander of the group of men that raised the flag at Iwo Jima. The people in the photo were: Ira Hayes, Harold Schultz,Michael Strank, Franklin Sousley, Harold Keller and Harlon Block. Just letting you know.
Have a wonderful Wonderhussy Birthday. 🎉 So glad you can share the day with your Momma. Volcano, Ca. looks like a cool place. So many little towns fell prey to big city water schemes. Nice this one escaped. Have a great B-day Sarah. ❤❤❤
First things first HAPPY BIRTHDAY, young lady and so mini more to come. You are such a joy to see and hear the world is a far better place with you in it. Your Mom and Grandma and sister I am sure are very proud of you and what you have accomplished. thank you. This video was as always fun to watch.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY SARAH JANE You are the treasure in Volcano. Hope you have a great birthday and you and your family stay safe and healthy. 273K subs over a quarter million.
As I watched this latest episode, I found it hard to believe I was just over 5 mi away at my daughter's homestead. I've lived in the area for over 40 years. Volcano was one of the first towns I explored as I was learning more about local history. I actually belong to the James Marshall chapter of ECV. Was actually able to explore the Masonic caves back in the late '80s, and worked for the company that owns nearby Black Chasm Caverns. Always enjoy when your explorations bring you close to my home. Daffodil Hill is amazing. There are literally thousands, maybe tens of thousands.... Of daffodil plants scattered all over the property. To see it in full bloom usually in March, is one of the neatest things I have ever experienced. I've been a fan since almost the beginning of your page. Keep these great videos coming.
Happy Birthday Sarah. Small contribution to help you put gas in the 4Runner. Thank you for taking us along on your explorations of your fascinating and diverse country. You’re an experiencer, letting us see places many of us will never get to, giving history and context to what you show, and imaginative backstories to fill in the gaps. Thank you to for your example of tolerance, a quality in increasingly short supply apparently. Live long and wander WonderHussy❤👍🎉🍹
Super cool episode! I'd love to visit this place on a bicycle touring trip and see the daffodils ... and right after that, the irises, which are the bulbs that were pointed out - 🎉 So pretty, I can just imagine it!!!
Hi Sarah, concerning the vinyl record by Willy Vanbavinckhove - Willy is actually from Belgium (Ostend - my hometown) not The Netherlands. 😊 And yes, he's still making music.
Ha! I knew you were gonna go to Volcano. The newspaper boxes when you got the mail gave it away. That's why I said make a vid about the first theater cuz I didn't want to give away where you were staying. Thanks for another great video!
Hi Sarah Jane: I need to clarify something you said about General Liversedge being one of the Marines who raised the flag on Iwo Jima. He was the commander of those marines, but he was not one of the marines who actually participated in the flag raising.
Great video of one of my favorite destinations in Calif. Each year on March 17, a group of us, motorcycle riders, would gather at the St. George Hotel for the weekend and plan our riding season. Rain, snow or shine, we gathered each year for over 20 years. on the 80 and 90s. Lots of great memories of the area and of Daffodil Hill, which was still open back then.
Chances are, You were at nearby Black Chasm Cavern. I helped do some of the mapping of the cave, and also assisted in the construction of the catwalk walkway.
💕Wonderhussy, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE this adventure. My family traveled thru many historical sites when I was growing up in California. You make these places come to life and I love the historical information you impart. Huell Howser would be proud of you. Thank you💕
Volcano is a cool little town. My favorite is Downieville, but Volcano ranks right up there. As I recall, during the gold rush, diamonds were discovered in the old tertiary gravels near Volcano. I found a diamond in the old gravels in Calaveras county just south of Volcano.
Happy BERFDAY! Wonderhussy, my wife and I love your videos! She loves to listen to your humor (she's visually impaired)! So, have a piece of cake without guilt!
Love your videos. You are entertaining and interesting. Not like these other tubers that show themselves camping in a Walmart parking lot. Boring! Keep it up.
Hi Sarah! Lived and loved in this area for many years. Never ending exploring and history. So love that you are in this area. A true Heart of California
Belated birthday wishes. Haven't completely watched so hope Mom treating you to dinner was a spectacular event. This video has to be one of your best ! Love the Sierras. Be safe ,healthy and happy. Grandma H age 84 So Cal 🤠🥳🤠🥳🤠🥳🌄🌄🌄❤
When I was a kid, about 55 years ago, one of my older brothers worked at our local neighborhood bakery. The bakery used to sell their day old bread, doughnuts and cookies to the crews that worked at the local paper and pulp mill. So there was always baked goodies in the lunchrooms at the mill. There was also a tavern that was just a 3 minute walk from the main gate of the mill and many of the workers would go there for their lunch breaks. Some ate the great burgers, and others just had a liquid lunch.
Happy Birthday, Wonderhussy!! My wife rides side saddle in parades in West Point and Sutter Creek. My wife has a friend who is the city manager of Sutter Creek and lives in Volcano. Thank you for the history lesson and for taking me along on your adventures.
This was one of my favorite videos you have done. Happy Birthday ✉️🎈🎉🎶🎂🍦🎁💐🛍💵🩴🕶🧢enjoy your gifts! Tell your mother I want to thank her and your father (I know 😢) while they were having fun making you, I’m have fun watching your videos.
You keep getting better and better. Great video as usual Wonderhussy! You are cute, funny, smart, creative and a little naughty. What a great combination. Keep up the great work!
I know it is uncouth, to ask a young lady her age so I will let that one slide, but Happy Birthday and best wishes for the next 12 months from all your Hussyites, Hussians, Hussioids, Hussmeisters and avid followers of all things Wonderhussy, here in Australia. Love these little town videos, they are the backbone of your channel!
Happy birthday wonderhussy 🎉 , and thank you for recognizing the clampers ecv with the plaque in town.. Hopefully we can get set up and explain about the clampers
Nice. I had a gf from Amador county, back in '86. She didn't live in Volcano, but, when I got my phone bill, Volcano was the location listed for the long distant calls from my place in the Sac'to Valley. (Hey, Kristie, no bones about it)
Dang WH, You're in my hood! the foothills are filled with small gold rush towns(Molelumne hill, Angels camp,Murphy's) that are rich in history and has many natural cool spots to visit. If you're visiting and exploring the area don't forget to head up to the high sierra's. BTW Happy Birthday! and TY for all your hard work in making your amazing and original videos
A man named John Doble, who existed at the time, wrote a very good ledger of this area. Don’t forget that there’s still diamonds around there. don’t forget to visit the gossip rock.AKA-Indian Bed rock mortar. Lots of chasms also some on private property.😊
I attended a work conference at the Volcano Hotel back in the 70's. Very interesting! Love how those guys were OG Antifa!
@Tictocdoc Oh...so Liversedge was probably a little too busy to be planting a flag, huh?
The daffodils do cover the entire hillside. More than you can imagine. They are one of the earliest blooming bulbs and are a harbinger of spring.
Irises in our neighborhood

Thank you for making this video. My grandfather was born in Volcano in 1898 and I really enjoyed seeing all the places you showed.
I visited Volcano for a week back in the Summer of 1978. All good memories.

Wonder Hussy does her homework...and tells a good story. Also much better looking than any history teacher I ever had!
She got her facts wrong more than once. Her theatrics are distracting and silly. It could have been a interesting video and half as long.
Well, look who's running around my part of town. Welcome! Watch where you step. There's plenty of gold nuggets, so watch where you steo.
haha Noah good one!
What a fascinating little town Volcano is! Now, I'm going to search for pictures of that Masonic cave and the Daffodils in bloom ❣️
Great video. Loved this virtual tour of Volcano. Im already checking routes to visit in person.

Howdy Sarah! It's always a good day when you take us along. Gold country is beautiful, thanks for sharing, stay safe young lady!
The last flowers you were looking at are Iris...that wasn't a bulb...they are risomes...and yes the whole hillside is Daffidils in Spring ❤
Super cool episode! I'd love to visit this place on a bicycle touring trip and see the daffodils ... and right after that, the irises, which are the bulbs that were pointed out - 🎉 So pretty, I can just imagine it!!!
Irises do very well in the gold country climate. You find them all over the mother lode region.

There was no catwalk the several visits we made in the late-‘70s. Maybe it was added later?
There was a cemetery somewhat nearby, as I recall.
Have a great Happy Birthday with your mom. The green bulbs are iris. You be safe and have another wonderful adventure.

The actual first flag raising over Iwo Jima was not photographed by professional photographer so they staged the picture you see today.
The first flag raised there was also a lot smaller.
Happy 25th birthday Wonderhussy!!
Beautiful and very interesting historical town, Thank you for the tour 💕🙏🇺🇸
My kind of town, so cute and quirky. Thank you for taking us to such unique areas that normally would be overlooked. I soooo want to live there!
Happy Birthday, Sarah! Love watching your videos and learning about history in your neck of the woods.
