Good evening, Jocko and Echo. My girlfriend and I just received our Origin gis last week. The obvious care and craftsmanship that went into them is inspiring. As I opened the packaging, part of me expected a genie that looked like Jocko - emerging in a burst of red, white and blue - to say, “Get after it.” We can’t wait to try them out on the mats. Thanks to both of you and Origin for all the hard work.

Not being an “average man” it’s being a good listener and knowing when and when not to speak- takes a great deal of humility and respect on both sides. It also isn’t an “average skill” most people are terrible listeners.

I feel like Role ethics in stoicism gives somewhat of an answer on whether to”play the game”. You must prioritize which roles are the most important (that’s kinda what Jocko was trying to conceptualize with being able to admit rule braking with dignity) and to play them with integrity. So if you have to sell the integrity of a higher role don’t sell it cheap (if you do play the game, make sure you do your best to make an impact for the better).

The Game. A competitive activity involving skill, chance, or endurance on the part of two or more persons who play according to a set of rules, usually for their own amusement or for that of spectators. The Game.

Interesting to think about . Playing the game is from the inside, hence someone is out as soon as they stop playing the game, same for whistleblowers. Maybe some changes can only come the outside (outside pressure, from the enemy, other countries/cultures economically/politically, etc.). The dichotomy seems to be the mitigations one could possibly achieve if one keeps one's influence by being inside.

How can you play the game say in a work scenario if you’re more introverted and not very charismatic unless it’s genuine? Is it just a matter of fake it till you make it or are there some mind hacks or tricks?

This is brilliant. In IT, I get to roll in whenever I want through the magic of VPN but my other coworkers (non-IT) don't have that luxury...this nasty female assistant manager hated my ass and when things went wrong, it was always IT's fault (because we show up at 930-10am)...WELLLLL that all changed since I get in at 445am (thanks Jocko) and still get to do whatever I want or be where ever I want, with the only difference is my haters not having any ammo to use against me. Take away all complaints and you will have the breathing room to do you. Your good will outway the bad, especially if youre a lynch pin to the company

Gen. Shinseki was removed for calling BS & not playing ball. They should have listened to him! A man before his time. He implemented Striker vehicles which are leagues ahead of the Bradley fighting vehicle’s! I believe his convictions led him to vote with his feet.

something ive noticed from these podcasts, from watching and listening to the way Echo responds when Jocko talks about the military or military history
ive had quite a few black friends, but ive noticed that almost none of them...like ive literally met more black girls that have an interest in that sort of thing...it probably wasnt the content, more that i was just telling a story, but black dudes dont care about the battle of whatever...at all, almost never.
im guessing its cultural...i dunno, its interesting

I dont agree with this "playing the game" idea. The fact that it's a quote that's thrown around the military constantly as a better version of "sucking dick" completely turns me off from people who suggest this leadership style in order to rise the ranks. Inherently its
something that you have to do to appease someone or some organization that you disagree with in some capacity. I agree in certain situations it's not always best to break the rules but if you dont break them just because someone disagrees with you or your boss "says so" or you want to be in your bosses good grace's for promotions/pay raises you'll soon find yourself in a situation where you are becoming like the bosses that you never respected in the first place. This is because the decisions they made to get the next promotion/pay raise you disagreed with and it happened while standing on their subordinates backs. It's a never ending bad cycle and you get to a point where all you are dealing with above and below your position are suck ups that never get anything done because their too afraid to make any decisions or accept any responsibility. Well the point is that if you play the game you can accomplish your mission and keep your people safe. If you don't, maybe you keep all of your integrity but you'll be far more likely to fail.
