I just received a late 2020 made Gibson 335 Figured cherry red guitar. First off it looks so beautiful and it brings a smile to your face when you look and play it. I found the craftmanship to be excellent and no flaws in construction or quality of parts as an issue. It looks beautiful and smells nice. The action was a little too low so I moved the screws up on the saddle a little just to get it low but not that low. The pickups on this guitar are the calibrated pickups. They are much brighter and open than some of the older ones I have played. To be honest even with reducing my treble knob on my Fender Twin to 5, the front pickup for what I was expecting was a little too bright for clean. I turned down the tone control to 8 and its now perfect. Now I am getting the beautiful tone of the Gibson that I expect. On the back pickup I have the tone knob down to 7 1/2. It sounds closer to my LP on the back pickup in the treble response. The 335 can sound a little icy picky with the tone control at 10. I reduced my Fender Twin treble to 4 but then with the tone control at 10, it lacks the top end you want from the back pickup. So my work around works best. When adding distortion it however sounds great and the higher treble works in your favor. To be honest for my taste I think I would prefer the 1961 335 Reissue which are not as bright just for the clean channel. But I like the neck better on the 2020 335 which is not as thick as the reissue. Right now I am just using my Fender Twin and have not used my Boogie or other amps yet. So granted with each amp you will get different results. I compared it to my 1989 Gibson Les Paul Custom. The LP has a thicker tone with the front pickup and has a tighter sound. On the back pickup, the LP rocks more, while the 335 which also rocks but it has a little less punch. LP is clearly a better guitar for heavier rocking than the 335. The 335 has a pleasant open sound in comparison. There is clearly enough of a difference between my LP and 335 and the different pickups helps justifying owning both. The case is nice but it feels so large compared to my Fender and LP cases. They include the tools you need, a thin black strap, and the inspection card. Turning pegs have a material that is non slip and tuning feels very secure. They also look great. All in all I think the the new 335's from Gibson are really great.
A quick comment on the pickups. The 2020-2021 pickups with the T Tops sound very similar to the 2018 pickups. Perhaps a tad brighter. I really like them a lot.
Both are great guitars, but the Figured guitar has a nicer top and if you don't want it to be brighter, you can always turn down the tone knob. With the historic guitar, you can't brighten it up as easily to sound like the Figured guitar. I also don't like the plastic tuning pegs on the 63, the newer Figured pegs look better. But with that being said, I think I would also be happy with the 63 335. It seems the 63 reissue is not available as a new guitar anymore. In 2020, Gibson have released the 1964 reissue 335 now. I was told the horns are a little pointer than the 63 version. They came out with the 64 335 as this is the model Eric Clapton played with Cream. Interesting that he had the block inlays while the dot 335's seem to be more popular later on. I am not sure what other difference there are. On another note, due to Covid 19, no one has 335's in stock. I contacted Sam Ash, Guitar Center, Sweetwater, and Musicians Friends in the States and no one has them. I am one of 14 people who have reserved a 335 from my guitar store. The Gibson production in 2020 was shut down for many months due to Covid-19. I am sure this really hurt their sales and their finances as well. Hopefully with all the pre orders of their guitars, they can bounce back and have a great 2021 year. I will not be able to compare 335's and pick the one I like best (unless I wait until perhaps 2022 when they catch up with production and all the music stores have 335's in stock.) Therefore I will have to take the one they send me. Thankfully due to the restructured Gibson company, they have the reputation of better quality control compared to some years past. On a side note, I hope your drinking whiskey is something you control and that whiskey is not controlling you. It can be a demon that can ruined you life. I learned my lesson after seeing it ruin too many people. I appreciate your videos very much and your explanation on the guitars is very helpful and done very well.
@@rollysguitars I am afraid to order online again , UPS employees keep stealing my orders. I ordered a Gibson es-335 in august and they can’t find it, that’s because the delivery or the customer service rep stole it. I ordered an BF Deluxe Reverb and that went missing. I do like your videos! I saw your Tobermory shirt, I have scuba dived their many times!
I bought one too but the UPS office guy or the delivery guy stole it!! They claim its just lost, after a month i finally got my Refund back. This is the second item that UPS seems to have lost and they just dont care about it in the big picture of their operation!
rollysguitars yeah... It sounds great. Never used my delay (JHS Panther Cub) that way and realized it sounds good because of your video. Watching your video helped me figure out I just need to lower the mix a bit to make it more subtle as an "always on" effect (newbie, so still figuring things out)
@@jeffsingerphoto yes absolutely. make sure the repeated notes are not on the way of the originals...nice and low in the background. I also make the delay sound as warm as possible! so take the presence, treble or turn the tone knob down to make it sound as warm and analog as possible!
Nice playing - I prefer the tone of the Figured but wouldn't kick the VOS out for getting crumbs in the bed.

Thanks for watching! Thanks Keef!!
Thinking of getting a Cherry 335 with the block inlays soon!
Check this out on my website! It's still available:

Thanks for watching Mate :-)
Just ordered a natural figured 335...can’t wait! Informative video...thank you and rock on 🤘
Nice one my friend! Good choice! I like "blondes" too ;-)
Yup. I’ve found my dream guitar.
nice I hope I helped you to choose ;-)

what's kind of effecter do you use?
It sounds like you have a delay on throughout the video. What delay? Do you always keep a delay on?
Yes I do like delays. I've been using a Strymon Timeline for years now! Do you like it?

What is the song/progression you use a few times?
I think it's "Sunny" by Bobby Hebb. Do you like it?
rollysguitars it’s fantastic. Just sat learning your version. Inspiring thanks.
@@rollysguitars That's a great song.
Thanks, well done, what are the pickups on each model ?
Both have MHS pickups! How did you like them?
@@rollysguitars Il like them both, but the 63 is closer to what I will expect from a 335, which confuses me if they have the same pick-up ! :-)
@@stevedangerslifemusic8323 Hi! I think the figured from 2015 had Burstbuckers on it
@@stevedangerslifemusic8323 pickups dont make the sound...there is alot more that goes into this
Both are killer guitars. Keeping them in tune longer than three seconds is the problem.
There are many tricks that help though…
🤫 It’s not the guitar, it’s you😬
You did not once play the neck pickup on the figured
Is ir me or does it look like he stuck his face in a pile of coke ? 😅😂🎉
