The black and white stuff is interesting because I *love* the black and white ink style. That's what I grew up on, particularly with RPG manuals like Dungeons and Dragons or Vampire the Masquerade that featured heavily stylized, sometimes even expressionistic, artwork that was super evocative. Same with Battletech manuals with mech sketches. But you're 100% spot on about them as play pieces. I did a full set of the Innestrad black and white lands for my Zombie EDH deck, and with that and some of the black and white art permanents my boardstate became something of a blur. It's even worse when the card is monocolor black or white. The colored borders actually can create enough pop to at least some standout distinction. But when everything is black and white AND the text is white on a semi-transparent black border AND the semi-transparent black background sits in front of black and white artwork, it's almost Yu-Gi-Oh esque levels of readability. So for now at least I think I'm gonna replace everything except MAYBE my commanders that I have in black and white with some sort of color-laden alternatives.
The solution is simple: do not purchase any "Universes Beyond", or "Secret Layer" boxes or cards. If you purchase these sets you are part of the problem this video addresses. Easy.
Nah, I'll purchase what I want. Thanks. I bought the Street Fighter secret lair. I don't want this LOTR secret Lair. Just because I purchase 1 doesn't mean I purchase all. Quit passing judgement on others just to make yourself feel better.
@@spookytanooky You're projecting that I'm expressing my opinion to make myself feel better. In the simplest terms: you vote with your money. I'm voting for "Wilds of Eldraine" this September. Also: Street Fighter 6 is lots of fun.
Even as a fan of Ralph Bakshi's LOTR, the screencaps are very lackluster. Only Secret Lairs set I ever bought was the dwarf one. Wish they would do one of Seven Dwarves, with seven different artworks.
You know what the best part for me is? One of those other 'Gandalf, Friend of the Shire' printings (the one in the top right) was the cover art for that weird but amazing animated movie.
There's something really funny about the juxtaposition of a very frank discussion Professor is having, while sitting on the chair backwards, in a gym, while there are floating heads around him.

this intro made me LOL i had to pause the video to comment how hilarious this was and how this brought me back to my middleschool days of peer pressure commercials
I haven't been paying super close attention, but my gut tells me they might be changing the offerings of basic land SLs based on how well they're selling, the classic money-grubbing way to maximize sales. "Okay, secret lairs are new, let's make it seem like a good deal" "Okay now that people are buying all our SLs, we can cut back on the value and people will still buy them" "Okay now people are buying them less, let's make them better value" etc and so forth.
Man I was really excited when I saw this secret lair was announced cause I loved the animated lord of the rings. but as soon as I saw the cards I was baffled. Good to know I’m not crazy thank you prof
I think 'suckers' was the key point. As you've said before, the personal, intrinsic value of the cards is important; not a lot of people are talking about true LOTR fans and collectors; those 'suckers' are the target demographic. What do they love about the crossover? Are they collecting the entire base set of cards just to display on their shelves? We've seen super-fans with rooms full of LOTR collectibles. This Secret Lair is perfect for them, limited-edition, regardless of price (to those collectors, $40 is cheap). Many of these people are only here for the merch, and they won't come back unless WotcBro has another collectible LOTR drop.
That’s all well and good, but none of it matters as in Australia. They are over AU$80 which is about to $53 US. So none of the professors review matters because of the price. Love to see the professor doing a price comparison for overseas customers.
Total financial value of the cheapest printing is a fine metric but one thing that keeps me from buying most secret lairs is knowing that I'll only use maybe 1 of the 4-5 cards in it. Barring the LotR and artist series this time I'm actually happy to see that the rest have solid theming and each lair fits together nicely in a single deck.
Now we can see how important Christopher Tolkien was. After his death, his father's work has been left unprotected and is being subjected to dark things.
Amazing video prof! I was hoping for an amazing lord of the rings secret lair but it’s just so BAD. Well deserving of your double fail. I hope you hit 1 million subs soon!!
A few points on this lair: the Wurm Token will raise the value of that lair into a range that will make it worth the purchase. I would guess the "secret" card will be sketch Wurm - we will see. Also there is NO discount for the packages, which is awful, but if you buy $200 you get 2 collector packs. But even with the $45 dollars (or so) in packs it is still not worth it to buy that much of this. Another factor? With over 60 days you can see what people open before the lair time runs out so you can decide if any bonuses will make it worth it.
Really makes you wonder why they stick with a fixed price for secret lairs and not just adjust with a range. It's even stranger when the amount of cards in secret lairs aren't even consistent.
Honestly the weirdest thing about the LotR lair (and the whole drop by extent) is that it doesn't ship until September. Almost feels like they made this change, despite the last drop + Honor Among Thieves shipping Instantly, because the bonus card for LotR is probably also not very good and they don't want people to know until it's too late. Sure, it COULD be something good - but imagine if in a week everyone found out the bonus card was like, Stew The Coneys. No one would buy the lair anymore. It may be a tinfoil hat moment, and I'd love to find out that it's actually a version of The One Ring or a Nazgul or something, but I'm not banking on it. edit: specifically it's weird that it doesn't ship until RIGHT AFTER the drop ends. It's a faster shipping time that they've often been before now, but after a full drop + individual lair that shipped instantly? Suspicious
The best way to do the fancy art basic lands would be a booster pack. 10 lands of the same kind with 5 random tokens in a $10 booster pack. The packs could even say which land is in it. 30 pack booster style boxes with 6 of each could even be sent to lgss.

@@spookytanookyI wish I’d been paying attention when that was available, I’d probably bought it.
I really love the art and flavor text on Reassembling Skeleton.
Not even half a minute in and the prof is pulling the dandân and oathbreaker phrase while i am sleeving my new dandân deck. 😂
Jim Davis Secret Lair would feature the same art and same frame as the original and just have a shooting star. :) He hates all alternate frames and so do I.
great point of view, as always! ‘overwhelmingly underwhelming’ is my favourite quote! 😁👊🏻
"Jeleva, Nephalia's Scourge" was the headline commander for the deck that Nekusar first appeared in :) Not that it's super important.
Oh that Nemesis of Reason is absolutely going in my Phenax deck. Love that art.
this intro made me LOL i had to pause the video to comment how hilarious this was and how this brought me back to my middleschool days of peer pressure commercials
The Death is Temporary Metal is Forever is so tight. Reminds me of all the classic metal/hardcore art. So rad.
I love your floating heads so much
The intro is freaking comedy gold, Prof LMAO xD
I am very impressed by how fast this video was made and released
Currently on the whatnot stream and we can still hear you!
Please do a commander video on Omnath 🙏
As a nekusar player. Who loves vintage metal art. The metal is forever was a must. Don’t care about monetary value. I needed.
I haven't been paying super close attention, but my gut tells me they might be changing the offerings of basic land SLs based on how well they're selling, the classic money-grubbing way to maximize sales.
"Okay, secret lairs are new, let's make it seem like a good deal"
"Okay now that people are buying all our SLs, we can cut back on the value and people will still buy them"
"Okay now people are buying them less, let's make them better value" etc and so forth.
True comedy is the prof circling card text saying “reading the card explains the card” while calling Worldspine Wurm “Worldspire Wurm”
The Squabblin and Goblin feels like an artist series for Wizard of Barge!
That’s all well and good, but none of it matters as in Australia. They are over AU$80 which is about to $53 US. So none of the professors review matters because of the price. Love to see the professor doing a price comparison for overseas customers.
Oh wow. That's crazy! That is absolutely the worst Secret Lair of all time. Thank you for sharing this video with us.
I just loved the way told the Secret Lair Alert to stop. "We're not doing that..."
Gandalf: "Bilbo, pass the boof."
Bilbo(exhaling smoke)"Nah....."
6:24 I really looking forward to building 5-color hey which card is that, just need a commander.
GZ on breaking whatnot! Stresstests are important :'D
Omg, I’m surprised that this secret lair is not $1000 😂
The front part of this video works best when viewed on a CRT tv being played on a VCR
Thanks prof. Your floating heads will keep me company in my fever dream nightmares.
NEW SECRET LA- No, we're not doing that today. FINALLY PROF GETS IT, THANK YOU FOR NOT VIOLATING MY EARDRUMS WITH YOUR SCREECHING
Really makes you wonder why they stick with a fixed price for secret lairs and not just adjust with a range. It's even stranger when the amount of cards in secret lairs aren't even consistent.
Accusing WotC of not reading the card as he repeatedly calls it WorldspiRe instead of WorldspiNe.
Love you, Professor.
That's some certified, top of the shelf, bangin', Lizards of the Coast stuff.
You know I would love a Jim Davis secret lair, and I mean the Garfield cartoonist.
