One morning, she went out to the grocery store and never came back. My grandmother raised me. My dad would visit us often but it was my grandmother who was my real parent. The time I lived with her were the best years of my life.

The stepmother sounds like every other manipulator trying to get the "family happy" when all she wats is money.
Obviously if only she and her daughter proved the narrator's father innocent instead of making her get a job and leaving him in prison, she could have lived like a millionaire and could have spent as much money as she wants. If she doesn't get a job, then both off them will be broke again.
