      Good for the soul spending time in the hills. It keeps you fit, sharp and positive. But best of all gives you the time to actually stop and soak it all up. Life’s to short to let it all rush by.
      Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment.😁

    This rifle is shooting great!
    Isn't it a great feeling when your gun does exactly what you expected? You do all the calculations, line up the shot, slowly pull the trigger and it's just like you pictured in your minds eye. All of the anxiety instantly goes away and you can congratulate yourself on your being a disciplined hunter. There's nothing better than that but eating the kill.

    Mate! Nice shooting 👌 What loads are you running in it, that’s unreal. Looking to get that particular cal for deer over here in Oz at longer ranges

    • @controlledrecoil-nzhunting
      @controlledrecoil-nzhunting  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I’m using a 300WSM pushing 195 ELD-M Hornady projectiles. These are soft and expand well at long range when the velocity is low. They are fantastic at longer ranges. If your shooting at ranges closer than 250m be aware that depending on how fast you are pushing them, they can over expand and lack penetration. Careful shot placement is needed in these situations. If you’re always shooting 300m or closer I’d go for the harder ELD-x or something similar. I use IMR 4831 or AR2217 depending on barrel length. I chose the tikka T3 (all long actions) so I could modify the mag length and bolt throw to allow seating out the projectiles further and allowing to use the long, high bc projectiles and still mag feed. Any more questions feel free to ask. Hope this helps. 👍

    G'day Tom thanks for sharing the video mate.
    I am looking at pairing a cz457 in 22wmr with the Helix 4-16x44 FFP. I believe that you might have one of these just wondering how you find the scope for hunting? What is the clarity of the lens like at close and long distances.
    Thanks again mate

    • @controlledrecoil-nzhunting
      @controlledrecoil-nzhunting  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi, yes I do have that model of scope. I think that would make a great combo. I have certainly used mine on a CZ 512 with great success. Of course it depends on your intended purpose.
      The 4-16x44 is the original helix. Iv found the clarity is nice for the money and they have a great parallax adjustment that goes down to 10 yards which is nice for the closer shooting. The new helix 2-16x50 SFP has HD glass which is a little clearer on maximum magnification but there has never been a time that the difference has actually affected performance in the field for me. That being said I probably noticed the most difference shooting at 950yards in hot conditions but was still making hits even with lots of mirage.
      With the original I can still spot 223 impacts at longer ranges in dirt etc. I have my 4-16x44 on a 223 which has been well used and has served me well. For me I would be happy to buy another one. The turrets are nice for the money too👍👍

      @trentfrancis4646 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the great reply mate appreciate it. I will be attempting to knock rabbitts over at a max of around 200 yards so the scope should do that easily enough. I wont be attempting 950 yards with the 22 magnum.😆✌@@controlledrecoil-nzhunting

    Awesome video! I’m a Canadian and I’m new to the channel so just wonder why you shoot the goats? I know pigs are invasive in many places but just wonder why the goat?

    • @controlledrecoil-nzhunting
      @controlledrecoil-nzhunting  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi, welcome to the channel. Here in NZ everything we hunt is introduced apart from some game birds that have limits and seasons. Apart from that every animal we hunt has no legal limits. This is because we have no natural predators here so populations explode if the are not controlled. If we didn’t hunt them they would simply take over and our native species would suffer for it. It’s a unique situation. It’s probably sounds odd but our hunting is the probably the most sustainable hunting as it’s protects our native species. If we are sensible about the numbers we can have amazing hunting opportunities in a balance with our native ones. This balance of course takes good management. Hope this answers you question. Thanks for watching 👍😁

    Hi Tom,
    What magazine do you use? Modified 300WM or similar?
    Great shooting - true marksmanship!
    J.

    • @controlledrecoil-nzhunting
      @controlledrecoil-nzhunting  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Jacob, I use a 300 WSM magazine with the block removed and a long action follower/ plate. You also have to lengthen your bolt stop to adjust your bolt cycle to be longer to pickup the round. Any other cartridge you you can simply buy a long action magazine however the WSM magazines are slightly wider than the standard 300 win mag so it requires the modification. Thanks for your support 👍

    • @Jacob-si1xx
      @Jacob-si1xx 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@controlledrecoil-nzhunting Thanks Tom!
      In the video it looks like you are using a 5rd magazine… i was told by the distributor here in DK that 300WSM mags are only made in 3rd…
      J.

    • @controlledrecoil-nzhunting
      @controlledrecoil-nzhunting  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, unfortunately as far as I know the WSM mags are 3 rounds. I do have larger magazines for other calibres but i have never been able to find a larger factory Tikka mag for the WSM.
      There is a conversion kits for using a Accuracy International Mags etc. these are wider and a small amount of stock modification is needed to fit the bottom metal as it replaces the plastic trigger guard and mag slot etc, however it’s pretty simple and only basic tools are needed.
      Interestingly enough I’ve found the 300WSM single feeds really well in a Tikka where as others like the 223 aren’t so good.
      I believe it may be as easier to utilise a chassis system that accepts these AICS style of magazines as standard. There are definitely larger magazines for the WSM available. They will be heavier as they are usually steel or alloy but this would allow you to keep your original stock unmodified etc if you ever want to go back to a standard Tikka style rifle. Just ideas, hope this helps. 👍

      @@controlledrecoil-nzhunting thanks a lot - great to share some experiences with the Tikka platform in rarer configurations. I have looked up the Waters magazines but they are not easy to get hands on… but then again - the original mags works great and if you carry two with you it should be more than enough.
      Agree on the single feeding - i have the same experience!

    I don't believe in head shots. There are too many times it goes wrong. The base of the neck is much better. They drop and their head isn't nasty.

    • @controlledrecoil-nzhunting
      @controlledrecoil-nzhunting  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thanks for the comment. I do tend to agree with you👍.
      I don’t usually take them but in this instance the situation was fine to take them ( a good accurate gun and a good rest). I don’t like taking head shots on deer for that exact reason, a lot of nose and jaw to hit that is not going to be instantly lethal.
      That being said it is nice to have no meat waste.
      There is always a lot to consider taking a shot and each situation is different . As long as it’s as quick and clean as possible, it’s a good shot.
      You make a valid point and it’s good food for thought.
