- Feral goats pose a serious threat to New Zealand's native wildlife, primarily our native plants. For this trip we set off into the Kaikoura ranges with the aim to help reduce the local goat population and hopefully find a pig or a deer for some meat for the freezer.

Iberians introduced these goats 500 years ago. I call them Oceanian black-and-ivory goats because they're found in Australia and New Zealand. Rangeland goats in Australia are invasive. It's very likely that New Zealand ones aren't invasive. They should be protected.

Great job dudes! Glad to see you helping NZ with the control of ferals. Those goats are causing havoc on the land. Terrible soil erosion in some spots you show in the shoots. Thanks for sharing.
Running shingle country and the Kaikoura earthquakes contribute. The goats (and other species, tahr probably being worst) selectively destroy the palatable plants as is evident, in preferred sites they cause local erosion. So do deer, like goats they eat most plants when needed.
Realistically hunting only reduces impacts significantly locally, like near huts etc. unless done by professionals (whose quality varies) or large animals being commercially valuable & accessible, like commercial deer/tahr recovery in open country.
Absolutely. As recreational hunters we should be doing more to control them. Keep killin' them.

My mate and I actually been to that hut after you guys. We laughed our asses off to the notes on the hut book about you having the worst time carrying water up from the creek, nice to put some faces to the story lol. We shot 2 pigs not far from the hut and killed about 7 goats, we could have killed at least 30 goats tho but we were low on ammo. Amazing job with the video

I'm new to hunting goats, I had my first trip a couple of months ago down in and around Queenstown and shot three.
I'm not into culling really, normally hunt to put meat on the table and into the freezer.
But don't have a problem with those that do.

Nice work.
Goat rib and eye fillet is top tucker. On the occasions I have served it up to some "slightly sensitive" folk; it was offered as "low-fat" lamb, and seemed to go down well..
The legs roast up nicely, as well. Low and slow; with a bit of a rub of olive oil and some rosemary and garlic....
Obviously, in your part of the world, there is a LOT of vertical walking involved in carcass retrieval, unlike here, where we often hunt them on dead-flat plains and with the aid of motorbikes to eat up some of the distances involved.
Sounds delicious, we'll have to pack a cast iron and some ingredients in our pack for next time!

My oldest son an i did a spur of the moment trip to the Sth island bout 2 months ago and were just blown away with the scenery (lake tekapo, mt cook etc etc) it was like epic is not an epic enough word to describe it👌

Hi Guys your doing great vids. Ive watched and shared all. One thing I’m always interested in is what setups we use for specific hunts like choice of rifle, caliber and ammunition used being factory or if handloaded with component data. Your editing is great with relevant cutaways to birds water boots bushes etc it’s all part of what we encounter on the hill and adds to the interest

In the 60s, we would present the tails to the Forestry Dept and get paid 3/6 (35c) and 3 rounds of .303 ex WW2 ammo per tail. Deer were 5/- and 3 rounds.
Reinstating a program like that could really help the aim to control feral goat population! Cheers for the comment 👍

Kaikoura was my old home town, and I got a fair idea where you are, I avoided them steep shale places, where one step up, meant two steps sliding back down most of the time lol
Was a lot of fun bowling the goats for target practice now and then, especially at the end of a pig hunt or deer stalking trip, but i begrudged using big bullets on them ...... just gets toooooo dear lol

@@southislandriflewalkers5545 for sure. Plenty farmers over here get destruction permits because the roos damage the property and over run the place. We try to go help out every few weeks with the .223 when ever possible.

Good shooting indeed !! What do you do with all the goats you shoot ? Are you allowed to sell the meat? The pelts make good soft leather for use as gloves / accessories.

We get all the files onto a computer and just transfer from there, I think nikon has an app called 'snapbridge' which let's you go straight from camera to phone

Crazy thought but true..... crazy how pretty the coats on some of these goats are.... just like the varied and beautiful colors of pigeons can be, even though they are both pest species. Have you guys ever eaten any of the goat meat, and if so was it good?
They're definitely pretty varied! Yeah we've eaten a bit of it, it's not bad in a curry or the slow cooker- good dog tucker. Definitely not a favourite though, we leave a lot of it out there in all honesty

Be a lot easier guys if you had a couple of ropes. One pushing the drums up, the other holding them, so the climber has a little more freedom to move.

I’d settle for airfare
Probably see the naïve goat population reduced a bit & the rest put out of sight and rapidly become difficult to reduce in a meaningful way (about 50% a year). Survivors quickly adapt, efficient shooters are rare. Check how many videos show nearly all animals encountered killed, no survivors is the top standard. On private land goats would become protected by many (like deer etc.) for owners mates. It might be a useful public relations exercise though, and would only cost the same as a couple of the spin doctors who will be providing reasons why not.
So a population of wary animals harder to find is the likely result. The tahr are a classic example of this, doing everything to make them wary and spread without meaningful control. Includes DoC aerial operations, which have been botched for decades.
A bounty on tokens (e.g. tails) for tahr would be potentially interesting. For tahr, about $50 each for a couple of seasons. Cheaper than what DoC can waste them for and enough for commercial carcass recovery if allowed at will. Cue aghast recreational hunter reaction, but tahr increasing to 3-5x the target maximum population by prioritizing rec hunters and DoC aerial shoots (another form of rec hunting as results show) demonstrates their actual ability to provide any meaningful population control (they couldn't even control the bulls).

@@dunruden9720 Goats are usually naturally curious and not particularly wary when not hunted (unlike many deer species) by hunters shooting or dogging that allow some to escape.
While dead goats don't get wary, survivors of incomplete hunting do so rapidly, and become very difficult to hunt successfully and educate their companions. A problem for successful pest control, and why efforts in those locations by most hunters are not actually contributing positively.
Where pest control is not being done, their efforts probably slow the rate of increase of some species, keep numbers in check in the easier sites and provide the hunting experience.
A goat getting caught in a gaiter is something I've never seen or experience in the Southern Alps till now haha

We usually take a bit for dog food and the odd curry/slow cooker but it's more for pest control than food
Bangers, mash and gravy is pretty hard to beat. Goats can be good tucker too if you treat the meat with respect you'd give to veni. I'msure that when they bleat and then come rolling down the shingle chute and land at your feet that is goat speak for "shove me in a sausi mate"! Nice to throw in a goat with your veni off cuts when making sausies.we should eat more goats, Thanx for sharing the trip.

I play The Hunter Call of The Wild, and it's nothing like this, but it got me into hunting feral goats. I want to fly to Hawaii or NZ just to hunt them now.

It was a standard length tikka and had 2 inches taken off when the suppressor was put on to make the rifle a bit shorter overall.

We try not to, usually try and harvest as much meat as possible. This trip was a culling mission though, with it being a backpacking trip there's only so much we can carry 👍
Does the government pay you for every head culled? That could help offset the cost of ammo, etc. In some states the pelt of a coyote in heavy winter coat is worth up to $85.00 USD. Nice furry collar on winter jacket.
There are paid goat cullers working for our department of conservation, not sure how their pay works (hourly or per animal etc...) They usually use dogs as well. It would be a fantastic initiative, I heard they used to do something like that back in the day!

We usually give goat meat to our dogs, you might of seen us trying to chew through some fried backsteak at the end of the vid. It's not bad in a stir fry or a curry but we much prefer venison!
It's considered poor form to throw goats at your hunting partner!

@@tiredofitall999 I'll answer this one for you. Nope, there is no tax or fees (or paper work) to purchase a suppressor in NZ. You simply buy one the right size with the correct threads for your rifle, attach it and you're good to go. As for cost, between NZ$300-500 (US$180-300).

Is meat from a mature billy goat any good ? We have some wild boar and people won't eat the males , buck deer aren't much good either
Its ecological recycling invasive introduced pests, not waste.
Particularly in rough areas like this. One of the delusions many seem to carry is about wasted meat from pest species.
If accessible and easy for the individual to recover it, they have that choice if they have a use for it, including gifting. And if an alternative value exists (like commercial sale of wild deer carcasses, currently not applicable, or trophy heads etc) shooting to waste is not ideal.
But most wild animals are in pest numbers in NZ now in many places, and our hunting laws allow the hunter to choose how to dispose of kills. excluding sale (due to disease etc)
@@johnmead8437 I’m from Pennsylvania in the USA and I’ve always since the first time I pulled the trigger I eat what I kill I hunt every year for 4 houses and nothing goes to waste I’m also Native American and for hundreds of years our people only hunted and killed for what we needed I understand what your saying about to many animals but it just seems to be a waste to let them just rot
@@mikemikolon3949 Different lands. The situation in NZ is similar to your wild pig issue, invasive pest with some value to some interests. Some species have commercial value, and if enough this has provide some control for ecological and agriculture protection, the helicopter deer recovery and tahr meat was effective where the animals could be recovered.
This should be encouraged more, but it is dependent on export markets (buy NZ venison!) and the economics of operating helicopters.
Some areas are selected for ecological protection control, usually employing hunters or for possums/rats using poison to keep numbers as low as possible, something controversial to many for whom the majority balance of NZ where no pest control is done isn't big enough for them.
Hunting in NZ is not licensed, just need a firearms licensed & gun, and permission to hunt on the land which is via a cost free permit on Department of Conservation land, the majority of public hunting areas.

No, unfortunately meat does go to a waste when doing a cull like this. If these goats were shot close to a 4wd track then they'd for sure get utilized. However in a remote area like this it's just not feasible in a culling operation. Cheers
