Henry Dundas was an avowed abolitionist who fought for the end of slavery. “Human nature, my Lords, spurns at the thought of slavery among any part of our species.” - Henry Dundas. Activists falsely labelled him as pro slavery for no good reason at all. We have many streets in Toronto named after slave owners yet for some reason the activists ignored all that and went after one of few men who fought against slavery in his time. It truly makes no sense.
'Sankofa' is a name that means absolutely nothing to anyone. It's a ridiculous choice done behind closed doors with zero public input. Rename the square if you must, but something that actually means something to Torontonians. No one is going to know what 'Sankofa" means, no one is going to bother to research the history of a word from Ghana, no one wants this except a few City Hall politicians.
Tracy is correct. It is performative. Also, there's nothing 'Canadian' about this term from Ghana- a country which by the way, practiced slavery for a lot longer than the British Empire ever did. Ghana has abhorrent anti-LGBTQ discrimination as well. So good going Toronto City Council. They didn't do their research at all.
He also helped free an African slave named Joseph Knight by representing him in court. “Human nature, my Lords, spurns at the thought of slavery among any part of our species.” - Henry Dundas
I'm tired of this government wasting taxpayers money. Whoever wants to change a street name, should have to pay for it out of their pockets. No one will called it by the new name, it's awful.
As a black men born in Toronto,Canada i find the renaming dundas sqaure is stupid and disrespectful. We're not even name it after a black canadian or another canadian. We're taking a word/phrase from ghana and put it on canadian land. Its stupid and disrespectful to all canadians and specially black canadians. Oliva chow administration is basically telling black canadians your name is not worthy being honored or respected in this city. What is worse is people of toronto wrent even a chance to vote or have opinons heard by oliva chow administration.
The name is a disgrace and it’s something Canada should be ashamed of, so definitely it should be changed and talking about wasting money. Are you kidding me? That’s pennies compared to what he’s giving out for things that don’t benefit any Canadians
And this person who was not voted for by our community is acting like she’s paying for it out of her pocket When it comes to Black people, they always get one as a spokesperson who will line their own pockets, and say whatever they want them to say shame And the Black people never voted on them as a spokesperson
Well why didn't they consult with the community about potential names they were considering? Sounds like a small panel of people decided on the name with no public consultation and when people from the public did argue about it they were dismissed. The city counselors are supposed to represent the people of Toronto, not any particular group of people in Toronto or anywhere else around the world.
Not standing up for Dundas but 1 never using that new name it is just such a horrible name for one of our main squares. 2 the money could have been used for so many other and better things that would make much more of a difference
If it is estimated 100-200 thousand that means final cost will be 1.2 million. Peanuts , Toronto has so much money they don't know what to do with it and will ask Ottawa to pay for it = people that can't afford food !
Sankofa doesn't even represent black Canadians. This is still Canada no? Sick of people who live here on a visa treating this place like nobody existed here before them. Sick of all these people treating this place like an international free for all takeover space instead of being respectful and acknowledging a country already in existence. Imagine a whole bunch of Canadians living on a visa in Japan and renaming their streets, institutions, and having the attitude that the land is for them now. If the aim is to be inclusive and respectful, the new name should be neutral and not about one specific group. Toronto square? City square? Gathering square? Kindness square? Does an English language name inherently mean it's racist now? This irritation involved in the name change is reflective of a larger problem of mass migration and the lower quality of living its created in terms of housing, healthcare, schooling. Most of the people in my place of employment won't even bother speaking English (until they have to interact with me) and they're on work permits. Meaning, they're treating it like their work place instead of our workplace in which they are the ones being treated with generosity. There's a difference between keeping ones identity and a takeover. Whose the one who gave all these people from elsewhere the entitlement attitude?
You sound unhinged. Whites have practiced this same nonesense around the world for centuries. Stop whining. By the way I agree, it shouldn't be changed
Yes, is questionable but will not be financed by the tax payer. “Yes it costs something like $104,000 to change the name of the square and the sign but all of it is paid for by the owners of the buildings around it,” said Mayor Chow
300k for this change. A budget of more than 500 million. This costs approx 1/2 of 1/2 a percent of the budget. 300k wouldn't but any affordable housing, get real. 300k doesn't even give 50 cents to each individual in the city.

City has no money but let’s put money the city don’t have and change Dundas name. Unbelievable.
But at least those 3 people, who were “offended” be happy, right?!
Canada is circling the drain economically but this is a priority. Oh….Canada.
I'm offended by the name Sankofa.

Money is flowing out of Toronto at an alarming amount I think it’s so stupid how this government can waste money
Terry Fox Square. Or is that too Canadian? Poor guy got kicked off the passport.
Yea because he is white and you know white people are inherently evil
Was Young Dundas for years! WTH! How about help people instead!
This has gotten so sick!
Dundas actually led the end of slavery democratically
He also helped free an African slave named Joseph Knight by representing him in court. “Human nature, my Lords, spurns at the thought of slavery among any part of our species.” - Henry Dundas
Wtf does Ghana have to do with Canada?
This renaming is disgusting and divisive. Identity politics has become toxic.

Lived Toronto my whole life and absolutely ashamed of this hell hole city .
It's easy to spend money when it's not your own.
It is and always will be Dundas Square , this has gone too far , Say No to Sankofa or whatever the heck it is
What about the Chinese immigrants that were abused in the past that built the Canadian railroad? Why not name it after them? Why Ghana?
Total waste of taxpayers' money.
Shoulda named it Gord Downie Square, not a name no Canadian needs to Google to know what it means
I dont know who that is
If you dont likr Canada leave... NOW.
You first. You don't seem to like the way it's progressing, so you leave.
@@lizliz4186 No I was here first 🤣
@@lizliz4186progressing?
@@lizliz4186 dumb liberal
This is silly…what about helping those who need housing, food, and work first? So backwards. 😮
Honestly does anyone else find BT a lot less annoying without Sid there? I much prefer Tracy being a permanent cohost.
Encampment Square would suit the times we survive in…No tent refused!
LOL.

Marxist nonsense
I'm calling it Skydome square
City has no money but can spend for this useless name change. Chow clown show
No big deal, money grows on trees these days 😂
Support the country you live in or live in the country you support.
Sankofa is such a dumb name. Name it Desmond square after Viola Desmond…
So, Sankofa Square is located at Yonge & Dundas, right? 😏

858 Days until the next election.
The money is not coming from city coffers. Donations. Donations
You don't do your homework. D-

Have they considered cleaning it up/renovating it. It's turning into a sh*thole by the day.
