@Warren Another great video, helping (me) to restore another one of my late grandfather's pieces. I have the WX (Lionel lines 12 wheel), nothing would make me prouder than being able to get that tender whistling again. I sure wish I knew someone in the New England area, who had a layout, as I do not. But again, thank you sir, for you videos and knowledge.

Great job Warren! And what a coincidence, I picked up one of those streamlined tenders in an antique shop (along with a Lionel Lines caboose) back in April, $16 for the pair. Both were NASTY looking but I figured for $16 I'd take the chance.
The whistle tender was more filthy and moldy than anything else with little rust although I did have to replace wires and the brushplate. The shell cleaned up fine and so I repainted and redecaled it.
Works good and looks good, not bad for an $8 investment!
Oh, as long as the tender was apart I added a light to it then installed a strip of clear plastic I turned red with a Sharpie pen to cover the three holes in the back of the tender shell. Looks great with the red rear lights!
The caboose was the same, cleaned it up and replaced the wires and the bulb. the shell's just fine so I'm leaving it alone. I'll probably flip it at the next club show.
One thing I like to do is pick up what I call "orphan tenders" at train shows then refurb and redecal them for various railroads, the run them behind the post-wars. A LOT cheaper than buying engines all the time!
For darkening steel parts you can try Birchwood-Casey cold bluing solution, it's used for touching up bare spots on gun barrels and frames and most gun shops or sporting goods places that sell guns should have it, or in this day and age you can probably order it on line. Bear in mind the steel part you're going to blue has to be DRY, no oil or grease or the bluing solution won't work.
A great tutorial! Thanks for posting!

I rarely pass up a rusty Lionel that I want. It doesn't take much to bring most of them back to life! I have seen the streamlines with the rear lights and I think they're pretty cool and have often thought of rigging something up. I have enough bits and pieces to do it.

@@warrenmuzakpostwarguy4331 Sure, try rigging up a tender light! It's not hard to do and you'll love the result!

Vinegar will remove the rust fast and phosphate black will restore color without painting. Better clean and nice like original coloring.

Birch wood Casey cold gun blue will do the job, just follow the directions on the bottle

Please get yourself a set of nut drivers. Go to your local flea market and drop only a few bucks on a used set. That Crescent wrench scares me around those small nuts.

Or a 1/4” drive socket set, I’m like you that adjustable wrench is definitely over kill.

Theres a lot of folks bugged by my crescent wrench. But theres even more beginners that feel more confident at tackling thier own repairs knowing they can use what basic tools they already have. THAT is what I am really trying to get across.
That said, maybe I'll add that to my Christmas list!

@@johnbeck3270Adjustable isn't bad, a pipe wrench would be overkill! 🙂
