Dirty And Tired Derailleur Gets New Life In 3 Minutes. How I Clean Rear Mech After Long, Dusty Trips

- How are you guys! Ready for some fun in the workshop or garage?
As you can see, my rear Deore derailleur doesn't look good, after a couple of days in the office (endurance, climbing workouts). If we let the dust and grime get to the pulleys, bearings and pivots, the mech will lose the shifting performance. So let's get to work!

I'm a professional mechanic and this has to be the best quick clean rear derailleur video I've seen yet that is done right with out or very little amount of cleaning solvent(s). Because nothing ruins s rear derailleur or rear hub bearings when using excessive use solvents or pressure washing.
I personally wouldn't use my pressure on anything other my path or drive. Won't use it on my car or my bike. Far too aggressive for either.
@@6ettinold bs. sealed ball-bearings and axles do just fine as long as one uses the pressure washer from 8-12 in away as it's supposed to be used :}
I've been cycling since 1983 and you just taught me something. Maybe it was me not paying attention to other videos closely enough but here it is. I've always had issues cleaning (what I now know is the) guide jockey wheel. Shift the cassette onto the biggest cog and it comes out of hiding. It also exposes the spring and pivots. Freakin brilliant. Thanks
How satisfying watching those jockey wheels get clean!
ikr!
I recently noticed how "gunky" mine were on the road bike, even after multiple washings that included application of degreaser. Will absolutely use this approach for the physical removal of that stuff. Strangely enough, the ones on my MTB are in great shape. Switched to a wax-based lube on both bikes a couple of months ago.
Oh yes
@@bullwinkle428 , squirt?
Nice to see a fellow Tractor Boy out in the wild. It was indeed satisfying to watch, unlike our performances this season..
There is something quite satisfying about seeing all that muck coming off so smoothly and efficently.
The amount of experts on this thread is so funny 😂
Appreciated the detail and close ups. I am ashamed to say I have not treated my bikes well over the years. Never too late to start!
Can’t lie that was satisfying when u took the gunk off the jockey wheels with a screw driver
Don't know why this vid popped but am most grateful.Sat in a park having lunch out bike riding. The derailier was playing uo so degunked it with a nail file. Now running much more smoothly .Will give it a good going over when I get home.
New cyclist here, this video is just what I needed 🚴👍
I placed an oil drip pan under the derailleur, sprayed the derailleur components with CRC Parts Cleaner & Degreaser Pro, used a rag to dry everything, an re-oiled all the components and the chain. Looks like new!
I like that you went for practical cleaning and lubing, rather than trying to get everything as shiny as possible...
Dude... I thought I kept my drivetrain clean but this is next level. wow! My frame rarely ever gets that dirty though unless it’s a fresh ride.
Why haven’t you used a degreaser to clean up the chain and the cassette along with the jockey wheels? I find it to be extremely effective along with the use of brushes in removing gunk from the bike. Follow it up with a warm soap wash and then follow up with lubing the chain followed by lubing up the dérailleur
THANK YOU! As someone who took a spill on my MTB yesterday, I really appreciate this, as I need to go over my rear derailleur.
brilliant video, short and concise, perfect. I'm going to check the rest of your videos hopefully gather a playlist of cleaning the full bike haha
After a lot of research on YT to fix my bike's rear derailleur shifting issue I finally found the issue and solution! Couldn't find a YT video on this matter! I explain it below:
1) The most common type of housing has an inner thin wires tube and an outer plastic covering tube. Apparently after a while because of pressure the outer plastic tube jams and the inner tube wires are exposed that can get crushed by pressure on ferrels! This causes a serious metal-metal fraction between the cable and thin wires of housing, worse than any dirt or rust can do!
2) Loosen the shifter cable and release the cable at the derailleur (watch YT guides) and through all housings to free all housing parts.
3) You have to cleanly cut the exposed thin wires of housing to align it with plastic cover tube. Be careful not to block inner empty hole (where the cable passes) by crushing the wires. You need a sharp wire cutter (or a specialized tool from bike shop!) Then clean up both ends of housing and lube a bit.
4) Insert the cable in all housing parts and through the derailleur cable clamp. Since you lost some housing length, to have the same tension on the cable at a particular gear you need to pull the cable out of derailleur cable clamp a bit compared to what it was before. This needs to be fine tuned to have perfect correspondence between shifter and derailleur for all gear range (watch YT guides).
Hope it helps someone.
Remember to replace the towel back in the bathroom before anyone misses it :^D
I dont ride bikes but good for you you have a healthy pass time but I really happy you are taking care of your equipment so many people dont take of any thing and never bother to learn how even do basic stuff then throw it away because it broke
I wax the chain for my gravel bike. It’s a life-saver. No wet lube means very little dirt is trapped in or stuck on drivetrain parts.
I use little tea light candles in a slow cooker.. £5, 3rd year same bag of candles 👌
Agree!! why everyone doesn't use this , I don't understand yet.
@@donavonlewis1039 theres people out there that struggle fixing a puncture, removing a chain would involve lbs in some cases 🤦🏼♂️. We need more dads in this world!😂
@Gweilo Agree with ya bud. So lets teach them the correct way and not cut corners! Let’s see a video of taking the chain off and a proper clean! And wax the chain. LOL
Have you tried the teflon type lube? Goes on wet and then dries leaving teflon dust as the lubricant. I mountain bike and have had good luck with that stuff. Never tried wax... Seems like grit would get embedded.
Good video, I always use a screwdriver to clean the jockey wheels too. Always wondered what the on and off switch does on my Xt derailleur now I know.
Great video, so many people these days seem to not understand cleaning the transmission properly.
But you do Timmy, of course. Thanks for chiming in.
The more I watch these maintenance and cleaning videos the more I want to switch to single speed.
Just changed the drive train on my Fixie, two cogs and a lock ring.
Looking at this bike with 10 cogs, derailer with three moving axels, springs, three wheels...
Let’s just say I’m happy with my Fixie bike just servicing it!
I dont even own a bike, and I feel like this was a great way to spend 7 minutes of my life
I have been doing this for 25 years, though not as well as you. Thanks for teaching this old dog new tricks. 👍
very nice! thanks! when i think 3 minutes i feel much better to do it than thinking of how many brushing & lubing i need to do
how to clean drivetrain in 3 minutes: video lasts 7 minutes with fast forwards and skips
how to do that
😂😂😂 it’d take me 7mins to work out which brush to use for what
😂
Yeah, very weird
@@GazRadCycling why doesn't that surprise me after reading your comment lol
in 2007 when I started mtb I did after every ride clean everything. now I just clean the chain BEFORE a ride lol. But it is a very nice video and I should do this too
Hi. Many cable housings are with teflon inner and this will swell and brake and jam on the cable if it makes contact with chain lube or other oils. Some cables are teflon coated too and shouldn't be touched with chain lube or oil either. Regards
What about silicone? That's what I was thinking around be good.
@@asdfgoogle should basically work but there are many different silicone oils. Some become sticky and some will mix with dust. Also anything that get's contaminated with a tiny amount of silicone will not have anything else stick to it at that place which is undesireable for some parts of your bike. If your wire is stainless just keep it clean with a dry rag, it will shift easy and exact if it and the housing are not damaged.
7x7 shift cables slide pretty well
Strange, teflon is chemically very much inert, maybe that is some other polymer
@@nickfirst7249 it's "kind of" common knowledge that this happens with teflon cable housing inner liners - i don't know if these liners are pure teflon or a carrier matrix but while I've witnessed it myself the information is sprinkled in forums and across mechanics, but who knows - you might want to ask shimano and share with us the answer?
Never even thought of the cable going back into the inner. Great tip, thanks.
In 26 years of riding mountain bikes I’ve never seen jockey wheels that gunked up. It suggests you’re over oiling your chain.
Try a Scottish winter or summer to be fair.
@@WIPEYOURLENZ or anywhere in the UK! That’s not the point though, don’t over oil it and clean it regularly.
Actually it looks more like he’s been piling a dirty drivetrain and it’s all mixing into that black gunk, I live in Scotland and your drivetrain can get like that real quick without using oil and cleaning it in the winter trust me
I really don't think you cycle fella.
It’s a geographic issue 🌼. Temperate climates like the UK or Ireland results in this happening all the time.
Very good video, thanks. But why didn't you use degreaser or some other solvent to do the chain, gears, jockey wheels and derailleur? Wouldn't that help clean them better?
if you must lube your mech pivots just use PTFE spray, its much less messy and wont attract as much dirt.
Satisfying to watch, well presented and filmed. I forgot a derailleur needs this kind of attention once in a while. No wonder my shifting sucks with a new chain, but with an ok cassette and chain wheels..
That screwdriver trick is fantastic
Yes.. although I'd use hard plastic instead of metal.
Very good video and precise cleaning. Good work. I love using a small screwdriver to clean the jockey wheels it’s very satisfying seeing all the crud come off!
1) To remove mud and gunk from the jockey wheels, use a plastic tool (there is a good one at the back of some brushes), not a metal screwdriver. This will avoid scratching the wheels, which would attracts even more dirt.
2) Instead of putting chain oil on the pivots, just give a global spray of Teflon based lube and wipe the excess. Far more faster , Teflon will also repel water and attract less dirt than chain oil.
Cheers
Very satisfing- I also use rounded shoelaces to clean the inside of the cassette...
Or fabric liner wom an old t-shirt...
No oil ! No wax ! No dirty !
I love it 😻
was really satisfying watching you scrape the jockey wheels lol
A thorough 3 minute cleaning and it only took 7 minutes.
😂😂😂
😜He should have said 10 - 15 mins
It typically takes more time to explain something or demonstrate it than to just do it.
Nice! 🤣🤣👏🏼👏🏼
@@guycarden8807 Except there is no time wasted in the video, he is constantly doing the cleaning things he would do anyway, there's very little where he is just talking or cleaning anything for longer than is needed. And it still includes cuts where he changes tools and FFWD of longer cleaning tasks. There is no way this can be done in 3 mins. I'm saying this as someone with a bike that does get pretty caked up and needs the occasional scraping and wiping and lubing of the mechs. 30 min would be a more realistic and still optimistic time for this.
I also love to use the toothpick for a quick clean up and disposal. Love the video!
Good tip
How do you clean the towels?
And how do you clean the brushes ?
You can tell it's much happier after being cleaned
I appreciate the step-by-step narration. Very informative! A little maintenance saves the costs of repairs.
so relaxing to watch, look at that dirt coming out
laffin my head off ,,nice one
is it just me or it was satisfying af
ASMR for cyclist haha
This video is so amazin informative and is so calm to wach i learnd alot, and had no idea about the hear and the dirt! thank you!
Over the last 35 years , I've used every chain lube out there . What works best for me is , wash with a garden hose and re-lube with a Teflon chain lube.
Very sound advice!
That type of lube evaporates and the teflon dust stays to keep things smooth. Definitely cuts down on the caking of crud.
@@johnnygunz2300 Spoken like a true hammer head . Happy trails !
lol my chain gets waaaay dirtier lol.. i avoid the awful jockey gunk by always wiping it down when i get home, same day. i found it can get really really hard to get that stuff off, so doing it right away is important, and it's only 10 or 11 teeth so it doesn't take many turns, just have to do both sides and know how to grab the wheel - where, how tight, and away from getting caught up, and not too fast. I also wipe my fork stanchions (first, when the rag is spotless clean) and i might finish with a quick dry squeeze of the chain and 10 or so pedal rotations. I can clean the chain later if it gets nasty. Nice job!!
Alutious I just use fenwicks foaming chain cleaner, don’t even have to use a brush for the jockey wheels coz it’s soooo good!!!!!!!
@@samb2334 i have been using wd40 foaming stuff from canadian tire because it is easy for my wife to use so she can clean her own bike instead of me doing it. It is ok, not great. I also have muckoff liquid degreaser. What is your techinique? How long do you let it sit, do you brush it off, do you apply it twice? Do you rinse off with a hose? How exactly are you using it?
Thank you for sharing this video
what chemicals or
oil did you use for the final touch on the deraileur please
can you please list the products you use on your bike. great video mate.

I like that cleaning tool "screw driver"
I found very useful your videos, Thanks.
I try to clean Chain and Jockey wheels after every ride, it makes a big difference in components performance and duration.
Strangely satisfying and a good "how to " video
How about cleaning the rear cassette and chain as well??
You should have shown the before and after clean side by side comparison!
I use diesel and a brush, for lubrication I use PTFE spray, works perfect and easy to clean. 🚴💨
Great job man... like a dental hygienist!
A good dental hygienist would point out the cavities, this patient need fresh teeth.
I find undoing the fixing screw of each jockey wheel and removing it enables you to clean it thoroughly including re lubing the bearings is easy, good video and tutorial though. 👍
Can i do this wearing blue gloves ?
You need to use a dry lube so that you can ride better and farther...less dirt gets picked up by the chain and part's last longer..
Video: Cleaning My Bike!
Your brain at 2AM: interesting, interesting.
Try baby wet wipes instead of a towel/rag. Let them dry by leaving the packaging open or take out a few and leave them outside of the box.
Nice video. No need for fancy brushes...just save your old toothbrushes.
great video...what's the service clutch video, please? as i can't find it...

I like that Morgan is not hyper positive, just normal. Hate when youtubers put on a fake act and act overly positive.
Folks, just switch to waxing your chain and most of this cleaning chore goes away. Sure there's a little prep time to purge factory lube and soak the chain in paraffin but I get multiples of that time back in reduced bike cleaning time. First of all without the petrol or snake oil products attracting every molecule of dirt in the forest the drive train stays much cleaner to begin with. But no matter how muddy the woods were I can garden hose each bike to show room clean in less than ten minutes each. The most time consuming part for me is soapy brush on the tires to get the dingy stain. Everything else including the drive train gets fully clean by water only rinse.
dont forget to check the jockey wheel bearings (if you have any). mine seized and pedaling backwards became almost impossible
The dirt falling off is so satisfying.
I was so satisfied too. Stepped unfortunately into the dirt and moved it by my feet on the bright carpet in the living room. Imagine my satisfied wife!
A very great tutorial. I'm a biker myself and often wondered how do you get your chains so clean !
Warm soapy water (not chain de greaser!) wash after every ride. Light lube before every ride. How simple can that be?
@@jimbojet8728 the problem arise when you don't have enough space to wash your bike :/

Oh my gosh, the amount of crud on those jockey wheels! Layer after layer come off! 😂
This is a lot easier than in other channels which recommend disassembled the whole unit, properly it is a better method but it is too advanced for beginners.
It's hard being a mechanic in Latin America, everyone puts truck grease on their bikes and never cleans them. I have come across many transmissions in a worse state
Yes! I've come across plenty of people who got the idea of lubing their bicycle chain with burnt oil.

I’ve always just jetwashed mine but just spent 3k on a new bike this was helpful thanks 👍🏻
I’m curious the brand of lube you use
I usually just take the chain off, derailleur off, and then I take the pulleys off and clean everything with a solvent.
It will be nice to see a video testing products that attract the least amount of dirt.
I live in the dusty desert of Arizona, were greasy lubricants have the tendency to attract dust particles. The dry bike lubricant (its liquid but dry out) with teflon that I currently used seems to reduce the buildup of dirt, but it is not a silver bullet. Thank you.
Try my tips from a mudproof drivetrain video.
After many years cleaning the chain of my Sensa bike... I now have a new Sensa bike with Gates belt and Shimano Alfin 11 speed. No more problems with dirt or rust ...
What do you use as lubricant on your rear derailleur?
now that winter is coming you have to use bike teflon oil, so it won't get off with water and mud ;)
Dry chain lube which its better than wet chain lube, it would collect dirt if you use wet chain lube
In case you are wondering what is the lube he puts on - MOMUM Mic Wax. You can also use it on the chain. The rules are simple, first clean thoroughly, then apply the wax. It is not great when it comes to lubrication (e.g. chain works fine only up to 60-80km), but it keeps things clean.
Is thst the same type of lube you use for the chain on the deralliour?
Good question waiting for an answer! Seems to be wax :) From my point of view, I would have thought chain lube is too thick for the derailleur moving parts... and will attract dirt faster. I use WD40 for this (not that I am an expert) :)
It they are that dirty id pop out the wheel and unscrew the jockey wheels. This way you have easy access to the inside of the cage and also easier access to the rest of the derailleur.
Seeing the amount of gunk coming out of jockey wheels almost made me cry... How did it come to this?
Ever think about using dry lubrication for particular events?
U didnt wet or wash it?
