Ahhhh, Convergence. The best thing about you was the tie-ins. This was probably one of the bigger turning points for DC regarding the New 52. If we didn't get this, we probably wouldn't have gotten DC Rebirth (and God, I love DC Rebirth).

I went out of my way to buy a bunch of the tie ins hoping DC would take the hint that many fans still did not like the new universe. Then I remembered they only care about preorder numbers but at least I helped out my local shops a little

Kurt Busiek used past continuity very elegantly in his Avengers run. DC uses it to try and have their cake and eat it too when it comes to reboots. “Oh, we’re rebooting everything…except keeping this bit and this bit, yeah the old canon is canon too.”
Honestly Braniac homself being horrified by his own cosmic-horror makeover kinda still works on a cosmic horror level in a Junji Ito-esque way to me. Like he'd basically turned into multiversal cancer, that can't be fun. The "Help... Me..." really sells it. If this comic had more time to bake I would have loved to see a little more of that, or explore it in a tie in so it's optional at least.
Admittedly...... Maybe I'm not getting the lovecraftian aspect of it? Maybe it's just the visuals, cause Brainiac looks borderline normal to his usual self, just his mouth is fused. Like, Lovecraftian is shit like The Upside Down Man, that kind of thing.

On the other hand, I can literally imagine them potentially pitching a more weird unknowable design for Braniac and an executive or editor or something being like "It doesn't look Braniac enough- and it's *icky.* Just fucking *EW.* Redesign him then we'll talk." which if that ends up being what happened that's a bummer. Otherwise if that's not the case, yeah I'd like something a little cooler at least from the neck down since the neck down still just mostly just looks like a dude in a supervillain costume. random side tanget that belongs in a convo about Convergence: I have the same problem with Mobius, it's not a bad concept on its own but in my opinion it's lame when the super hyped up true form ends up being another dude in a costume when the original designs were much more distinctly inhuman by comparison and benefited from it. It was also an expansion on the bizarre explanation of the weakness of the original Earth-Two (and later New Earth) version of Alan Scott, that the green fire was the incarnation of "green, growing things." that the Starheart, the source of his powers, was a weapon created by the Guardians of the Universe, the Green Flame of Life (which made no sense later in the post-crisis continuity when it revealed life was white on the Emotional Spectrum. Was this ever explained? ) Explicitly tying his powers into The Green itself just made more sense.
The tie ins is actually what started me going to my local comic shop more often. I did collect the actual event but like you said the tie ins were the best part. Made me wish I bought more of them (this was before my deep dive into Blue Beetle so I didn’t get those physically) but for all the good and the bad from reading comics I guess I’m grateful to this event and of course to linkara which kinda helped with all that too Edit: also happy birthday
One of the best tie-in issues was about pre-New 52 Renee Montoya written by (who else?) Greg Rucka. It had a very creative spin on the way the captured cities keep its citizens alive. In the story, Montoya meets a version of Two-Face who has been flipping his coin for his own life every day for months, and every time it has landed with the clean side up. It’s implied that Telos, or the system running things, was subtly moving the coin when it was flipped to keep Two-Face alive.
Hold on, this "pit cities from different DC continuities against each other" concept sounds awfully similar to the Secret Wars event Marvel was having at basically the same time.
That opening in the Injustice Universe is pretty accurate to how Injustice 2 made Superman a completely irredeemable murderous asshole that nobody likes, to the point that everybody who wants to play him uses the Bizarro skin so they don't have to put up with him.
It took till Injustice 2 for that to happen? Dude murdered Billy Batson near the endpoint of game 1. I’d have figured that would have been the point of no return for a lot of people.
@@mitchellcowan2500 People were still holding out hope that Superman would get a redemption arc after the first game. Part 2 made it clear that wasn't going to happen.
The whole "undoing the first crisis" thing was so ignored, that the Dark Crisis storyline from a couple of years ago features the Pariah as a major antagonist who has been trapped on the pre-Crisis multiverse, a desolate, destroyed multiverse. The events of the series ends up resurrecting all the previous multiverses, including the pre-Crisis one, so the end of Convergence was completely ignored.
DC's relaunches have tended to have one thing in common. They want to eat their cake and keep it, too. They want to 'clear the deck' and 'simplify', but instead of starting over, they try to start with 'some' history intact, which seems to make things worse, because those who've been reading longer have no idea what's canon and what's not, but there's still a history that new readers don't know about. A lot of that seems to be because they can't make a decision. From what Roy Thomas has said, Crisis was originally intended to merge the five remaining universes, but not to change history. He was supposed to have been able to keep All-Star Squadron going. And you yourself mentioned the short notice on Flashpoint.
Thank you. I've been saying that for years. DC's never had a full reboot because they always keep some stuff from before the reboot. Usually Batman and Green Lantern. It really is interesting how Death Metal actually paid off the ending that Convergence promised when you stop to think about it because the previous crises were undone and everything became canon. Scott Snyder said in interviews how he wanted to write a story that stated that all of DC's history mattered and that a crisis/reboot signified that something was wrong. However, he clearly didn't think through the ramifications of that type of story and other writers were more than quick to examine just how goddamn complicated everything had gotten. Also, it's worth noting that after Convergence we got a Green Lantern storyline where New 52 Hal Jordan fought the Zero Hour one.

They appear WAY less in the actual event than you would think. Hell, once Batman Who Laughs achieves his final form, he kills all of the other Batmen instantly.
I certainly appreciate that the animated Crisis gave Conroy a more respectful send-off than the CW’s Crisis on Infinite Earths and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.
This is a better version of Secret Wars II than the actual Secret Wars II. A shame DC never went back to the restored multiverse after Convergence. I mean, we all knew they’d go back to the New 52 timeline because it was all they cared about at the time. At the very least, Convergence was a great send off to the pre-New 52 era…at least before Rebirth came along. I’ll bet Convergence would make great fanfic fuel for other pre-New 52 characters who got dragged into this like the Super Buddies from Generation Lost or Jaime Reyes. Hope you’ll get to Convergence tie ins soon, especially the one with the surprise resurrection of Lian Harper. Next time, we end the Secret Crusade with Dark Nights Death Metal.
Convergence is an event that means a lot to me personally. I was going through a really rough time in late 2014/Early 2015 and Convergence really helped me get through it. So while the event isn't perfect I'll always have a fondness for it. The only thing that bugs me is that Telos never got his happy ending as his solo book after the event was cut short and ended with Parallax abandoning him in the void! I really hope he makes a return next year since it's the 10th Anniversary of Convergence. Or that at least we get a Convergence omnibus.

I feel the about the Stan Lee heroes losing to Futures end robots. It pissed me off then and it pisses me off now. Stan Lee was awesome and these heroes have much more story potential than anything in futures End.
Funny you mention the Continuity Alarm. I was thinking about it even before starting this episode. I imagine it at a bar somewhere trying to drown it's sorrows in alcohol.
Convergence had ONE, ONE important outcome. It led to the Lois and Clark Miniseries and their appearance in the Final Days of Superman. The fact that even THAT got "resolved" by Mr Mxy shows how irrelevant this entire event was. Then again, it was basically a stand in for when DC moved their HQ so I cant really complain too much.

Actually yes it shown in the miniseries after this event called Superman Lois and Clark with then showing a flashback as of how this team stopped the anti monitor but it only show Clark Kent Lois lane and their son Jonathan Samuel Kent superboy as a baby during that flashback and the rest of that team going there separate ways and that’s about it it but that’s just what I am remembering from that story, if you want the full context I did do a video about that miniseries a long time ago on my channel if you want to check it out it’s your choice of course there’s no rush. 😀
A new AT4W? About a big-ass event? Right on time for my birthday! Around the same time as LInkara's! Funny thing about this event: it came out around the same time as 2015's SECRET WARS with a similar premise.
Professor Pyg is a bit more well known nowadays. He was used in Batman: Brave and the Bold, Beware the Batman, and the CW Batwoman shows. I wanna say Gotham and the Telltale Batman games too.
Convergence was my first event I read as a kid in 2015 (I was 13 and had just got into comics themselves in the last year). I have some heavy nostalgia for it and the era of DC it was a part of. I had very little idea of what was actually going on though and just went along with it since at the time the only current DC books I was reading was Aquaman and Flash
Also two of my favorite tie ins to convergence was Superman and Lois fighting flashpoint universe and seeing Clark and Lois give birth to there son with flashpoint Batman help that gave us Jonathan Samuel Kent Superboy and the flash tie in especially with Wally west teaming up with his kids irey west and jai west to fight flashpoint Wonder Woman was super awesome and badass and tons of fun in my opinion.

DC's attempt to maintain a coherent universe after so many retcons reminds me of Elder Scrolls canon. They even have their own version of Kalpas and I wouldn't be shocked if DC had something similar to CHIM and Amaranth somewhere in their cosmology.
Real fact: Convergence tie ins was the first tie ins were the first dc books I pretty much bought in two years. Having quit reading dc during the new 52. The fact they had to do that with Superman because that books had become such a mess. Where lois even reveals superman is clark kent to the dc world. I don't know what I was enjoying more. At around 30 minutes the issue of retconning away via crisis events old continuities comes up, my issue with it isn't that DC needs to constantly follow the hundreds of continuities, I agree with Linkara that having a consistent core is necessary and even good. I just would like it if they stopped saying "We destroyed the world you enjoyed so much" and instead went "Yeah it's out there having its own adventures but we don't show it. Maybe you could ponder that yourself?" While it's a story and I can headcanon anything, seeing the stories I enjoyed being treated so carelessly does rub me the wrong way when comic creators do it.

Lewis, I've just got into comics. I'm now starting to collect them. The comics I'm collecting are the Ultimate Marvel Graphic Novel Collection, Marvel's Mightiest Heroes collection, IDW TMNT volumes, Hellboy omnibus volumes and Trese volumes. I also got V for Vendetta and Nimona graphic novels.
Oh, you're getting nice collection! I, myself have also started collecting comics. I got some rare ones like the Transformers marvel comics 1 to 5. Along with a Gwenpool omnibus & TMNT mirage comics vol.1
For a month of events whose unifying theme seem to be "sideline the heroes and end with the impact of a wet fart", it at least seems like Convergence had SOME sense to it. Changing Superman's status quo in a way that... hopefully would make sense if I was a DC-guy who actually followed those comics, and managing to be a somewhat satisfying story on it's own unlike Infinity Crusade's fights that went nowhere until Starlin's Most Special Boys could make their move, and Secret Wars II affecting no one except the Beyonder, this at least seems like it had SOME consequences and featured a lot of familiar faces that hadn't been around for a while. It's a very SLIGHT event, and seemingly didn't really amount to much, but I felt far more compelled to sit through this episode than any of the other ones- Telos alone felt more engaging than anyone around The Beyonder.
If I recall correctly, the whole "saving the multiverse" thing was thrown in as part of the DCYou initiative, where, if I understood it correctly, DC was gonna throw out it's centralized continuity, or at least not be as strict about it, letting the readers create their own head canon continuity of sorts. However, there was a HUGE back lash against it, so DC decided to no longer go in that direction.
Yup that’s right which dcyou era was just a failure and made no sense what’s so ever and immediately dropped when rebirth was announced which made me so happy.

Many people probably were "headcannoning" explanations, like the New 52 not being an entirety of the multiverse, just an isolated "bubbled" cluster of universes, with Multiverse at large never ceasing to exist in the first place, but it's nice to know that Multiverse was officially back. Sorry, Linkara, but you're totally wrong on The Red. While stuff like The Rot and The Black was definitely post New 52 stuff, The Red has been tied to Animal Man since Grant Morrisons run in the late 80s, where it was called the Morphogenic Field, and even getting referred to explicitly as The Red, a counterpart of The Green, consistently since the mid 90s.
One day I'm gonna have to rewatch past episodes in the order of the comics released just to better understand all the crazy things going on. I may not understand, but boy do I love it. So how were they supposed to prevent the original Crisis? Keep the Anti-Monitor from waking up?

On the other hand, I can literally imagine them potentially pitching a more weird unknowable design for Braniac and an executive or editor or something being like "It doesn't look Braniac enough- and it's *icky.* Just fucking *EW.* Redesign him then we'll talk." which if that ends up being what happened that's a bummer. The tie ins is actually what started me going to my local comic shop more often. I did collect the actual event but like you said the tie ins were the best part. Made me wish I bought more of them (this was before my deep dive into Blue Beetle so I didn’t get those physically) but for all the good and the bad from reading comics I guess I’m grateful to this event and of course to linkara which kinda helped with all that too

One of the best tie-in issues was about pre-New 52 Renee Montoya written by (who else?) Greg Rucka. It had a very creative spin on the way the captured cities keep its citizens alive.
In the story, Montoya meets a version of Two-Face who has been flipping his coin for his own life every day for months, and every time it has landed with the clean side up. It’s implied that Telos, or the system running things, was subtly moving the coin when it was flipped to keep Two-Face alive.

That opening in the Injustice Universe is pretty accurate to how Injustice 2 made Superman a completely irredeemable murderous asshole that nobody likes, to the point that everybody who wants to play him uses the Bizarro skin so they don't have to put up with him.
It took till Injustice 2 for that to happen? Dude murdered Billy Batson near the endpoint of game 1. I’d have figured that would have been the point of no return for a lot of people.

The whole "undoing the first crisis" thing was so ignored, that the Dark Crisis storyline from a couple of years ago features the Pariah as a major antagonist who has been trapped on the pre-Crisis multiverse, a desolate, destroyed multiverse. The events of the series ends up resurrecting all the previous multiverses, including the pre-Crisis one, so the end of Convergence was completely ignored.
DC's relaunches have tended to have one thing in common. They want to eat their cake and keep it, too. They want to 'clear the deck' and 'simplify', but instead of starting over, they try to start with 'some' history intact, which seems to make things worse, because those who've been reading longer have no idea what's canon and what's not, but there's still a history that new readers don't know about.
A lot of that seems to be because they can't make a decision. From what Roy Thomas has said, Crisis was originally intended to merge the five remaining universes, but not to change history. He was supposed to have been able to keep All-Star Squadron going. And you yourself mentioned the short notice on Flashpoint.
Thank you. I've been saying that for years. DC's never had a full reboot because they always keep some stuff from before the reboot. Usually Batman and Green Lantern. It really is interesting how Death Metal actually paid off the ending that Convergence promised when you stop to think about it because the previous crises were undone and everything became canon. Scott Snyder said in interviews how he wanted to write a story that stated that all of DC's history mattered and that a crisis/reboot signified that something was wrong. However, he clearly didn't think through the ramifications of that type of story and other writers were more than quick to examine just how goddamn complicated everything had gotten. Also, it's worth noting that after Convergence we got a Green Lantern storyline where New 52 Hal Jordan fought the Zero Hour one.

They appear WAY less in the actual event than you would think. Hell, once Batman Who Laughs achieves his final form, he kills all of the other Batmen instantly.
I certainly appreciate that the animated Crisis gave Conroy a more respectful send-off than the CW’s Crisis on Infinite Earths and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.
This is a better version of Secret Wars II than the actual Secret Wars II. A shame DC never went back to the restored multiverse after Convergence. I mean, we all knew they’d go back to the New 52 timeline because it was all they cared about at the time. At the very least, Convergence was a great send off to the pre-New 52 era…at least before Rebirth came along.
I’ll bet Convergence would make great fanfic fuel for other pre-New 52 characters who got dragged into this like the Super Buddies from Generation Lost or Jaime Reyes.

Convergence is an event that means a lot to me personally. I was going through a really rough time in late 2014/Early 2015 and Convergence really helped me get through it. So while the event isn't perfect I'll always have a fondness for it. The only thing that bugs me is that Telos never got his happy ending as his solo book after the event was cut short and ended with Parallax abandoning him in the void! I really hope he makes a return next year since it's the 10th Anniversary of Convergence. Or that at least we get a Convergence omnibus.

Convergence had ONE, ONE important outcome. It led to the Lois and Clark Miniseries and their appearance in the Final Days of Superman. The fact that even THAT got "resolved" by Mr Mxy shows how irrelevant this entire event was. Then again, it was basically a stand in for when DC moved their HQ so I cant really complain too much.
Which said series was actually pretty fun.

Actually yes it shown in the miniseries after this event called Superman Lois and Clark with then showing a flashback as of how this team stopped the anti monitor but it only show Clark Kent Lois lane and their son Jonathan Samuel Kent superboy as a baby during that flashback and the rest of that team going there separate ways and that’s about it it but that’s just what I am remembering from that story, if you want the full context I did do a video about that miniseries a long time ago on my channel if you want to check it out it’s your choice of course there’s no rush. 😀

Funny thing about this event: it came out around the same time as 2015's SECRET WARS with a similar premise.
Professor Pyg is a bit more well known nowadays. He was used in Batman: Brave and the Bold, Beware the Batman, and the CW Batwoman shows. I wanna say Gotham and the Telltale Batman games too.

Convergence was my first event I read as a kid in 2015 (I was 13 and had just got into comics themselves in the last year). I have some heavy nostalgia for it and the era of DC it was a part of. I had very little idea of what was actually going on though and just went along with it since at the time the only current DC books I was reading was Aquaman and Flash
Also two of my favorite tie ins to convergence was Superman and Lois fighting flashpoint universe and seeing Clark and Lois give birth to there son with flashpoint Batman help that gave us Jonathan Samuel Kent Superboy and the flash tie in especially with Wally west teaming up with his kids irey west and jai west to fight flashpoint Wonder Woman was super awesome and badass and tons of fun in my opinion.

DC's attempt to maintain a coherent universe after so many retcons reminds me of Elder Scrolls canon. They even have their own version of Kalpas and I wouldn't be shocked if DC had something similar to CHIM and Amaranth somewhere in their cosmology.
Honestly the only other universe that might be more confusing is the nasuverse but even then thats pretty easy to understand than dc at times lol.

Real fact: Convergence tie ins was the first tie ins were the first dc books I pretty much bought in two years. Having quit reading dc during the new 52. The fact they had to do that with Superman because that books had become such a mess. Where lois even reveals superman is clark kent to the dc world.

At around 30 minutes the issue of retconning away via crisis events old continuities comes up, my issue with it isn't that DC needs to constantly follow the hundreds of continuities, I agree with Linkara that having a consistent core is necessary and even good.
I just would like it if they stopped saying "We destroyed the world you enjoyed so much" and instead went "Yeah it's out there having its own adventures but we don't show it. Maybe you could ponder that yourself?"
While it's a story and I can headcanon anything, seeing the stories I enjoyed being treated so carelessly does rub me the wrong way when comic creators do it.
And how it leads to Dc using it as a excuse to use there embargos.

And FINALLY as I finish the video, it kind of feels like someone wanted this to be where the pre-Crisis multiverse was re-introduced, but like the day after the last issue went to print someone went "Wait, I've got a better way to do it!" and then they pivoted to that and just hoped nobody would notice.
Lewis, I've just got into comics. I'm now starting to collect them. The comics I'm collecting are the Ultimate Marvel Graphic Novel Collection, Marvel's Mightiest Heroes collection, IDW TMNT volumes, Hellboy omnibus volumes and Trese volumes. I also got V for Vendetta and Nimona graphic novels.

I, myself have also started collecting comics. I got some rare ones like the Transformers marvel comics 1 to 5. Along with a Gwenpool omnibus & TMNT mirage comics vol.1
For a month of events whose unifying theme seem to be "sideline the heroes and end with the impact of a wet fart", it at least seems like Convergence had SOME sense to it. Changing Superman's status quo in a way that... hopefully would make sense if I was a DC-guy who actually followed those comics, and managing to be a somewhat satisfying story on it's own unlike Infinity Crusade's fights that went nowhere until Starlin's Most Special Boys could make their move, and Secret Wars II affecting no one except the Beyonder, this at least seems like it had SOME consequences and featured a lot of familiar faces that hadn't been around for a while. It's a very SLIGHT event, and seemingly didn't really amount to much, but I felt far more compelled to sit through this episode than any of the other ones- Telos alone felt more engaging than anyone around The Beyonder.
If I recall correctly, the whole "saving the multiverse" thing was thrown in as part of the DCYou initiative, where, if I understood it correctly, DC was gonna throw out it's centralized continuity, or at least not be as strict about it, letting the readers create their own head canon continuity of sorts.
However, there was a HUGE back lash against it, so DC decided to no longer go in that direction.
Yup that’s right which dcyou era was just a failure and made no sense what’s so ever and immediately dropped when rebirth was announced which made me so happy.

Concerning return of the Multiverse... At least the thought and the gesture counts. Many people probably were "headcannoning" explanations, like the New 52 not being an entirety of the multiverse, just an isolated "bubbled" cluster of universes, with Multiverse at large never ceasing to exist in the first place, but it's nice to know that Multiverse was officially back.

Sorry, Linkara, but you're totally wrong on The Red. While stuff like The Rot and The Black was definitely post New 52 stuff, The Red has been tied to Animal Man since Grant Morrisons run in the late 80s, where it was called the Morphogenic Field, and even getting referred to explicitly as The Red, a counterpart of The Green, consistently since the mid 90s.
I have the first 5 issues of AM and recall something similar.
