    Thank you for sharing your experience. I agree. I would add that even for advanced playes, releasing tension is not always what they do. I found that it helps to really become aware in very slow motion of each finger separately, releasing tension of the finger before the next is used. It is less obvious than it sounds and not explainable in a hurry. It needs practice with full awareness of what is going on. The last finger is up when the current finger is down (except in legato). Often enough that is not the case. But with the release of tension, fingers are not up in the air, just they rest on the keyboard! And please control that the arm is fully relaxed as well, no tension in the fore arm or shoulder should be experienced. It may take quite some time for relaxing fingers, hands, arms and shoulders to become an automatic unconscious process. I add the comment from personal experience and from study with a teacher, a well known pianist. I think it needs .more details and time to demonstrate. Greetings to all, and again, thank you.

    As a kid, I would have lots of tension in my left hand especially, so I would twirl my fingers to help for relief. The circulation hasn't always been the greatest, but w someone who is autistic, this can become a way to give off some tension. I am just getting back on the piano as of Christmas 2018, and it's a slow process, but it's been fun.

    As there are so many well meaning videos like this online, I do think it is important to know that there are actually no muscles in our visible fingers, only in the palm of the hand. In my opinion, exercises in the name of strengthening the fingers really are a misnomer as there is nothing needing to be strengthened. As long as we are seated at the optimal height and with good posture, the ‘controlled’ weight of our arms, hands and even fingers is enough to lower the keys and raise them. If anything these sorts of exercises when practiced with care, can develop our awareness and help us play in a more coordinated way. When our hands are relaxed, open, quiet..poised but not flaccid, we are more likely to stay close to keys so that like walking, we can better feel the fingertip on the key and better control the transfer the weight of the whole arm through the fingers to the bottom of the key bed. I highly recommend reading the Thomas Marks book ‘What every pianist need to know about the body’ if you are experiencing tension playing the piano.

      That's a really great point! There are no muscles in our fingers.

    • @nadeemlo
      @nadeemlo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Each finger has six muscles controlling its movement: three extrinsic and three intrinsic muscles. The index and little finger each have an extra extrinsic extensor.

    Such a fantastic tip and it has already helped me a lot! I'm a Piano Diploma holder but received it way back in 2008, and haven't really been active on the piano ever since - but took it up again because I need it for my composition work. I've been practicing Waldstein these days and this finger tension tip has been able to help me quite a lot handle the technique and dexterity required to play this piece without over-stressing the fingers. Huge thanks to you for this amazing video!!!

    Now I understand why pianist extravagantly move their fingers like that, its not that they want only to look beautiful while playing but to loose tension too AHA!

    There are no muscles in the fingers. They are in the hands and forearms. And forearm rotation between the rapid triad also works without a wrist break.

    • @aymenortashi8411
      @aymenortashi8411 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just noticed too lol. It's like im way too focused on my playing to breath 😂

    • @uncleswell
      @uncleswell 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Just takes practice! Try doing some exercises you already are comfortable with and focus on your breathing. Just normally, like you would if you were sitting in the middle of an empty room. Consciously allow your muscles to relax. (Let your tension melt into the floor.)
      Then start adding some unfamiliar stuff into your exercise routine. It's when your focus is gone that you might end up unwillingly holding your breath. If you find you're not breathing, just go back to the original easy exercise, and start from there. Like everything, your mind/body will adapt.
      This is one of those things you might not think of when you think of learning to play an instrument... But it is a vital aspect that is all part of the package of becoming better.
      For me, it was an example of a great lesson to not underestimate an expert in any field.. it may seem what they're doing is straightforward, but once you try it yourself, you realize how much extra nuanced control/knowledge is needed behind the scenes.

    Hi I'm a beginner for piano and m trying to do some excercise but My right hand fingers are little stiff(since birth) so whenever I am trying to play the posture of hand is not going according the way you taught, Everytime I'm byrying to play scale or do practice my hand goes little tilt or finger is not coming on right place,
    Can you please suggest or recommend any practice which should I do ?

    • @Sitbon08
      @Sitbon08 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you sitting at the right height? This is so important. Make sure the tip of your elbow is level or slightly above key level. Keep your hand relaxed but with good arch shape in your hand. Focus on feeling the fingertip when you play but with the support of the whole hand and arm behind it. Work with gravity to play not against it.
