That was a very interesting article, here are a few more tips on how to play the piano…
Try practicing about an hour a day, or even 1/2 an hour if you have a busy schedule.
Do more practice whenever you have more time. For example, on weekends you can do more than 1 hour, like two or three, or even more. This is very helpful because it pulls you out of the routine of piano playing, and lets you practice more and perfect the pieces you play.

I think that is good, Sabrina. I also think she is saying to not make it so hard that you come off 10 minutes feeling like you stink at piano. She wants you to end with a "win" to keep you positive. If you have more than 10 minutes, then I would think you'd want to challenge yourself more like you said.

I randomly clicked on a Pianote video one time..... ended up watching several and got so caught up in Lisa's infectious enthusiasm that I bought a piano last week! It's been over 30 years since I attempted anything musical...... Here goes nothing!

I have my keyboard in kitchen. Every time I'm waiting for something, like for the water to boil I practice playing for a couple of minutes. That really works for me. This is minimum resistance method - I'm already there, the keyboard too, I have to wait anyway, so it makes it super easy to just start practice.

I've become obsessed with the Bach Goldberg Variations so for my 10-min practice session I'll try and play some of it, even if it's just one voice. It's more fun than scales and I can learn a lot more of how it's put together than just listening to a recording. The counterpoint is insane in that piece.

This is a great lesson! I’ve noodled on the piano my entire life but didn’t make a real effort until recently. Now I’m struggling to find pieces that are neither too complicated or too easy. Tonight I sat down and played through this and when I arrived at the sight reading piece, I felt successful when I learned to play it all the way through without any mistakes. It’s exactly what I needed! Honestly, you had me when, in another lesson, when you said happy chords and sad chords, describing major and minor chords; I thought I was the only one who called them that. Thank you so much for the perfect inspiration!

Thanks so much and I agree all we have to do is take those chunks of time. Ever since I began learning (I'm a senior learning piano from scratch). I even take smaller chunks of time sometimes where I have a few minutes while waiting for something on the stove and I'll practice something specific for those few minutes. Then again later during another break. Again, thanks for this great video.

I think my 10 min practice, if I have no time, is pretty similar. I start with the same Hammond exercise but I usually try to practice different accent patterns when I do it. Then I move to scales - quarter notes randomizing the accents, then eighth notes accenting every other note, then triplets accenting every third note and finally sixteenth notes accenting every forth note. Each variation I travel up the piano one additional octave. Then, I practice some chord cadences (this is my biggest weakness) and arpeggios before I move to some practicing and writing of my own music. And you're right. As soon as I sit for ten minutes, it becomes longer. I should take more time to learning other music. Sometimes when I'm writing, I fall into repetitive habits and I really need to try things outside my comfort zone.

Thank You. I was trying to sort this out and you have laid it out nicely. Initially I aimed too high in the practical. I love learning the theory - to quote my original teacher I am about 2nd or 3rd year Uni but my fingers are at Mary Had A Little Lamb - I can easily get distracted by good youtubers such as Adam Neely, Jimin, Aimee Nulty, Christian Fuchs etc. I have avoided arpeggios and broken chords and get frustrated with the order of exams that do not get near the flats, where most jazz seems to happen, until grade 5 or 6. You have helped me get back on track. 💕 In defence I have had several heart operations and each time it is like starting again but the good old Circle is the simple reminder of where all the scales, modes, dominants etc are.

Thank you Lisa. That looks like the perfect exercise for a 10 minute time slot. Yes, its sort of a fixed mindset practice, because its an easy win, but even if its training the muscle memory and the feeling for the keyboard. Trying to learn the piano without a real teacher just from the tutorials I know that its often disappointing when the tutorial is too much advanced for your current skill level. This one looks just easy enough to have fun and succes. Thanks a lot.

More great advice, thank you. I am just a beginner [but heading a little toward lower intermediate - I hope] and I practice usually 60 -90 minutes per day. One of my warm-ups is Hanon 1 over two octaves then triads LH and Hanon RH, then triads RH and Hanon LH. This lets me work on getting the LH/RH dynamics to sound even. For sure I am going to learn Hanon 2 because it looks like it is a little less 'robotic' then #1.

Lovely singing there at the end. And I agree so much about just setting aside a small amount of time to practice ... often it'll grow into more time and even if it doesn't... I think people would be surprised by how much progress they make just practicing 10 minutes day (vs 1 hour once a week) because you're building on your progress instead of having to relearn each time.

Those little exercises might seem easy and not very useful as time goes but later, even if you drop them for a while, when you go back to old material it's much easier because of those exercises. Sight reading in particular : you don't even realize you are making progress but before you know it you are deciphering sheets 10 times faster and it makes learning new material so much easier.

Cool. This is how lessons were structured, without the sightreading. Perhaps my assigned piece was the reading. I was a terrible student, but now I'm getting better again.

or-as I do, I tell myself okay, I'm working on 4 songs but I'll just sit down and do one part of one piece. and it turns out I end up going thru my whole list. That's how I overcome procrastination.

    Greetings,
Hope people that want to learn an instrument follow your advice and as time goes by they devote more and more time into doing something they love.
If we have time for social media/random stuff that numbs the brain,we definitely have time for some practice.

Excellent video! I know what I'm going to do now because I also feel overwhelmed sometimes, which makes it hard to start at all. I will set a timer for 10 minutes because that makes me dedicated to that 10 minutes and I can fend off interruptions. Then I know what I am going to make for my 10 minute "foundation". I will do the warmup with scales like you mention, then there are certain basic patterns I will always do, and a song I want to work on. From that 10 minutes I will branch out from that foundation depending on the time I have. Thank you for sharing! I'll look for you on #LBRY too.

@@PianoteOfficial Actually, I started learning piano about a week and a half ago, and I've been practicing about an hour a day. But your idea gave me a "foundation" and makes me look forward more to my practice sessions.
