I have a 1984 xr200. Still runs great. Starts every time 1-2 kicks. Main thing I’d suggest is check the intake and exhaust valve clearance. It is pretty easy to do. They seem to get tighter as the springs age. These bike are notoriously hard to start with tight valves. Change the spark plug and run tank or two of gas through it. If that doesn’t work, you can lean the bike over for a second or two to the left (clutch side) and flood the bowls on the carburetor. It will smoke for a minute or two but this gets mine going in the winter on a cold start. Also, I’ve owned the bike for over 30 years and have never put gas with ethanol in it. Congrats on the bike. Enjoy.
I got my 99 for 700 bucks. Ran ok, valve adjust, air filter, carb tuning, now it really runs great. Biggest expense for me was the rear shock upgrade. I forget the company but they are in CA and it was about another 700. They set it up for my weight and riding style. Probably my favorite dirt bike now.
‘86 was such a good year for Honda, and I had almost every bike they made that year, except for the street bikes. I had the dirt bikes, the 3 wheelers, and the 4wheelers. My favorites were the CR125/250SX/ and my favorite bike of all time was made that year, the TRX250R. I had all the other ones too though, the XR200, Big Red, TRX250, 200X, 350X,110,200s. I’ve owned a lot of ‘86s.... Oh, and an XL250, but that one was ‘87.
Did you know in 1987 honda reused xr250 motors in honda cbx 250 they are e-start only and changes done to the engine to make 31 horsepower (XR makes only 24) and were sold only in the canada australia and new zealand. im sure they would be a great donor motor for the xr250r they are pretty cheap crashed too.
I love these dirt bikes. I almost bought a frame that was in great shape without the engine for cheap a while back and now I am kicking myself for not grabbing it now.
I picked up a 1994 xr200 about 3 months ago for $500NZD. Needed ALOT of tlc as it was used on the beach and not looked after, however it ran incredibly well! just a little clutch wear. I’ve owned bikes before but always wanted to take one apart and learn so this one was a project, clutch is rebuilt, engines now in the freshly powercoated chassis and the plastics are ready to go on with the rebuilt suspension!
The engine is one of best Honda ever made. Same design was used on the XL125s and 185s, and it was used for a long time. With enough TLC, these engines will last a very long time coz built like tanks.
Going to argue with the KDX 175/200. Better bang for the buck. Way cheaper to rebuild and can't be compared to power and handling. These competed so poorly that Honda switched up the marketing from enduro class to trail bike class. Too bad Honda never took the small bore enduro class as seriously as they did with the CR motocross bikes.
4-strokes back then could not compete with 2-stroke bikes of the same displacement. It's cheaper to rebuild any 2T but if done according to the manufacturer they will be rebuilt more often and honestly the biggest maintenance thing on the XR's was changing the oil and adjusting the valves every so often. I've seen several XR bikes run for years even with no maintenance done.
It’s pretty hard to beat the reliability of any Honda product….. just because of the failure of most every original Kawasaki dealerships that were either just eliminated or absorbed by other local bike dealers tells you the overall story of the Kawasaki brand….
@bugbomb8048 not understanding your reasoning. Dealership network doesn't translate to performance of the product. Kawasaki is still a leading brand of highly performing reliable motorcycles. FYI I've been riding Suzuki bikes for years so it's not brand loyalty. Those KDXs were the bomb.
How do you do a video and not know more about the Honda XR200? First year 1979 XR185 last year 2002! Just like Honda makes a good bike Toyota makes a good pick up so why do you have a POS transmission blowing F150 in your driveway? Tundra 2022 and older even T100!!!!

Very true. I’m also a fan of the KDX! Would love to find a early 2000s 200!

Yea I agree but kdx 200s are becoming harder to find

Hey man, i just went from an 1993 xr80r to a 1986 xr600r, #1 am i cooked? #2 are they any good too?
Really depends on what kind of riding you are doing. That’s a pretty big bike!
XR 600 won Baja multiple times.
One of the best for dual sport if you plate it, just no e start.
just acquired a 1986. what's the difference between 86 and 87?
I don’t know if there is much difference pretty much the exact same bike
I had one it was a 90 something can't quite remember but I loved it..went through everything and always reliable but mine didn't have the light on it
