  • The camshaft is what allows an to engine breathe. It's rotation opens and closes the intake and exhaust valves. This week we install the camshaft, set the camshaft timing then adjust the valves on the 1973 Honda CB750 engine.

    You forgot the spring in the cam chain tensioner! You helped me figure out how to get the cam in . I was going nuts ! Your video helped out a lot thank you. Peace

    To heck with those points.
    I got rid of them. I went to solid state, never had a problem. Always packed a point plate with you , just in case.

    Great work Dean I am now a subscriber. It is so refreshing to watch YT videos that cover the whole process in detail (including educational mistakes), along with good tips and constructive viewer feedback.
    I have renovated a few bikes over the years and for me the engine builds were the best bits, after 40 years of working on bikes and cars (as an amateur engineer) I am still in awe of the detailed work involved in designing and making an internal combustion engine. Thanks again.

    I recently picked it up an '81 CB750 that the previous owner had completely disassembled, stuck into 5 unlabeled boxes, and left in his garage for 12 years. I'll be watching your series for a while in the coming winter months. Thank you for taking the time to make these. Detail like this is hard to come by!

      The 81 .... twin o/h cam .....is a completely different motor to the s.o.h.c.

    I was given a 78 cb750. The man parked it in his yard in the open in 1981. Tank is in bad shape. Rims totally rusted out. Top end locked up. Everything generally is clean inside the motor. Hope to get it up and running soon.

    Im getting close to opening up my own motor for a look. I know no motor is realy the same but these vidoes describing the details and the difficulties (not just what to do) realy help. Im not saying this is pure educational but it makes it more familiar with the components and the function. when everything is new its just a mess.

    Ive always had a lot of mechanical car knowledge and really wanted to look into a cafe racer style bike. The videos and advice you give are excellent. Im picking up a fixer upper in a few weeks to drive around town and to work (5 minute trip with the new job). Cant wait to tear into it once the temp get above 40 here in Michigan, most likely mid April at the rate the temps have been around here. I have the confidence I can fix anything on it after watching all your videos!

    Another awesome video! Going todo my valve adjustment tomorrow(if I can find that small feeler blades locally anyway lol!). Do you happen to know if that final drive seal would on a 1975 750F could be changed with the crankcase together? I know you said later model F's but hoping you meant later than 75. Seems crazy to split the crankcase to change a seal!

    I have enjoyed this series of videos. I have 4 cb750 SOHC bikes and have a rebuild coming in my future. I have watched all your videos from the first to the last.       jerry henderson Because it takes an intellectual mind that is willing to actually learn something and sit through a 30 minute video. I think a good majority of TH-camrs have an attention span of 10 seconds. My average viewer engagement is 7 minutes.

    It's interesting that the camshaft is secured at 4 locations which what people say is over defined and there are no bearings to help the camshaft rotate smoother. I'm trying to understand why they design it like this.

      pusinxx Many overhead camshaft engines are designed this way. The camshaft has very little side loading on the bearings so this type of bearing works ok.

      with perfectly round polished steel and some oil that section of the shaft is a bearing . no doubt there are ways to improve , i don't know about bikes but some later model v8's started using roller rockers because the cam lobe is prone to wear out , i've seen lobes with 1/8 inch deep grooves worn into them .

      jerry henderson Bigger springs for the bigger valves means more resistance and more friction. That mass has to stop moving and reverse direction which equates to some high peak forces.

    I have read that the spindle bolts rob horsepower. Supposedly the early model bikes didn't have the bolts. Trade off is possible rattle at higher rpms

    Great video series! I'm about to get my first motorcycle -- a cb750k4. I've watched this whole series from start to finish in order to get familiarized with the bike and learn as much as I can about it. Rookie question: why don't the camshaft journals require bearings like the crankshaft and connecting rods?

    You put assembly lube on every metal-on-metal part EXCEPT the adjuster screw end or the valve stem end where they meet (or did I miss it?). Pretty important not to have them start off dry.

    Please don't forget to loosen the adjust bolt after you get done. To many time is it forgot about and eventually bad things happen, mostly noise.

    Right now I'm putting together a 1977 model Honda CB750F engine (motor CB750E number 2615951) to recover from a failed mechanical unarmed, and I have great doubt. you begin chapter 19 with two small pieces through your fingers ( Calls orifice oil control Partt number 12238-300-010) in my engine are not present these parts.
    It is possible that in this model not bring? what if I build the engine without these parts?

    were my eyes playing tricks on me or cylinder #3 inlet valve spring looks upside down and I always believed when tensioning it should be tension-ed from center out

    I just checked my valve clearance a couple days ago. After watching your video I realize I definitely set mine too loose. It's making my tappets louder than usual. I didn't realize they should be that tight on that feeler gauge, I set it so there's just a very slight bit of friction on the gauge, it moves very easily in and out... not enough friction to hold the feeler gauge in place while it hangs off the engine like that. I guess I'll go back and re do it. Should it be tight enough to where the next size gauge up won't fit...or will that next size gauge just be super tight with a lot of resistance?

    Hi, great video... How do you know when you're at 4 top dead center, what does that look like? at 30:25

      A straight 4 fires and is at top dead center every 180 degrees. The firing order tells you which cylinder is next after #1. Then turn 180 for the next in the firing order etc. The valves will be loose on the cylinder that is on Tdc and the cam lobes will be away from the rockers. A v8 auto engine fires every 90 degrees of crank rotation. You can put your thumb over the cylinder and turn the engine. When the air pushes your thumb off the plug hole, the valves are closed.

Would the person (cough) have to pull the engine from the frame again and start over... or could you still get the timing correct? I have a Dyna Electronic Ignition... if it was 180 degrees out would I be okay?

    Am I ok if the cam notch is down when #1-4 is TDC and both rockets loose only on 4 or must it be #1 that is TDC and cam notch up. ?

    Assembled Camshaft and I can adjust the valves as per catalog....its almost as if the cam is 180 degrees off? If I rotate cam 180 with notch down and leveling marks horizontal with retainer. Help!

      +pllagro - I can adjust intake and exhaust tappet on cylinder #1 but not the other factory specified ones per book...Such as exhaust tappet #2 and inlet tappet #3----tappets are all the way out and I still can't adjust???

      @honda850chop I've re built this 2X now. Yes, last go round. It was a timing sprocket position. You have to get the sprocket bolted correctly along with chain positioning.

    You clearly no your stuff about rebuilding this motor are you self taught or trained? The reason i ask is I'm having problems with mine and was going to tackle the issue myself. I have basic skill with a motor and thought I would have ago.
