Imo it's better than the book so far. The adaption has been phenomenal so far.

My only gripe so far and its a very small one is that in the book, Blackthorne's time in prison did two things. He learned of the gun-running/rebellion secret the Portuguese were desperate to keep from Toranaga, but what is more, he learned a whole slew of situational Japanese phrases from the Spanish priest and he made use of them a lot more than he has been in the show. He came out of that prison impressing everybody including the reader with his ability to learn Japanase. We get a single shot of this when he says thank you to Yabu, but really, there should have been a similar scene with almost everybody he interacts with who are also impressed how his start to learning their language. But there are absolutely many other things that the show has improved the book on, like Blackthorne learning much quicker in the book how to bow properly.

Aww, you guys got everything all mixed up, haha. It's fine - this is a very complicated story. Toranaga (don't call him Yoshii - that's his first name and not even very close friends/family would ever call him that in public) has the Minowara bloodline, and they were once a family who held the title of Shōgun. Shōgun is similar to warlord or war chief - someone who rules by martial power, martial law. The person who died was the Taikō - it's complicated, but basically he ruled more through politics (even though he also had fought wars to become the ruler) and diplomacy once he was in power. Japan had an Emperor during all this - it has always had an Emperor and still does. But the Emperor for a very long time was more of a religious figure, "descended from the gods", who was secluded in the Royal Palace and didn't mess with politics too much.
The Taikō's son is about 5 years old - he's the one who'd rather have archery lessons than calligraphy. His mother, the Lady Ochiba, was visiting her pregnant sister who is married to one of Toranaga's sons. The woman urging Toranaga to "be the Shōgun already, damn it!" was the...governess/nanny to the Heir. The Lady Fuji, who had to allow her son to die with her disgraced husband, is a grandaughter of Lord Toda Hiromatsu - Toranaga's closest and most trusted friend. Lady Mariko, the translator, is the daughter of a disgraced Lord who also committed seppuku. She would have preferred to die with her father. Lady Mariko is married to Lord Toda's son.
So, Blackthorn is English, hired by a Dutch trading company with specific orders to find Japan and open trade with them. They are also ordered to take out as many Catholic bases, colonies, strongholds, settlements, whatever they happen to find. They need to do this to get their hands on a Spanish/Portuguese rutter - the written instructions on how to navigate along the shores. They managed to get one and Blackthorn got them to Japan. It took too long and was an insanely hard trip, so they lost 4 ships and 486 crew members along the way. It's one thing to follow a coastline, and another to just sail out across the entire Pacific Ocean without any kind of GPS - over 5000 miles with only the stars to guide you. Adn they had to sail across the Atlantic Ocean first to get to the "New World" - that's another almost 3000 miles but at least it had been done by many people by this point.

Shogun is a temporary position in the imperial court called Seii Taishogun. The Seii Taishogun was originally the commander-in-chief of the army that was formed to subjugate the EZO (a powerful clan in Hokkaido), an ethnic group in the northeast region who did not submit to and were in conflict with the Yamato Imperial Court(currently the imperial family). From 1192 onwards, BU-KE families (a general term for families with military-related government positions in Japan) were appointed by the imperial court, held military power, and held real political power.

I watched the original miniseries in 1980 when I was 9 years old and many times since and I have read the book many times. I have the miniseries on VHS, DVD and Blu-ray. I have been enjoying the new miniseries, there are some differences but nothing that has pissed me off or anything. This book/miniseries is what got me interested in Japanese history and the language, which I eventually majored in.

Its ok and normal to be confused in the first episode when theres so many names and plots already forming so dont worry.
Also, they shouldve wrote in the beginning "english language is replacing portuguese" so it wouldnt cause so much confusion at first.
I get why they replaced it tho..my language, portuguese, Is incredibly hard to learn and speak, especially for English speakers.

Boiling someone alive in the cauldron is the most accurate japanese shit. Have you ever heard about Ishikawa Goemon, the gentleman thief of old Japan, who stole from noble houses and gave the wealth to the poor? He was executed the same way when he was caught by a warlord.

the kashigi yabu character, the scheming midlevel lord who boiled someone... is quickly becoming a fav of mine. the actor has an expressive face and was given a great plotline and character. i think the character is bored as fuck and is ambitious and grasping. or at least that was my take on it. have sex with a consort? meh. watch a sex live show, was that his son as the other guy? something new.

If you are in the low class such as a merchant, craft man or farmer, you will be poor but at least you will have a chance to live. If you are in the high end death will always be lurking. If you are an heir of the shogun family, you will be poisoned by the other heir's mothers...
