Manny was also one of several Padres players (including Tatis if I’m remembering right) who stayed to help escort fans from the stands through the dugouts helping to evacuate DC stadium in July 2021 when there was a shooting outside the stadium. He easily could’ve ran for cover, worrying only about himself, but instead he helped perfect strangers get to safety. That says all you need to know about the man.

One key thing here...Hardy was in the midst of a career resurgence when Machado came up. His 2011 30 homerun season was a surprise to the Orioles and they rewarded him with a 3 year contract. Watching this after we just re-signed Manny today. The guy has been tremendous for us in SD. I understand the external perception of him...but if you watch him play every day and you see how he leads the team, it's impossible not to respect, if not love the dude as a player. Yes, he sometimes doesn't hustle down the line out of frustration. But he always plays hurt. And when he slumps at the plate he still plays sublime defense.
