Closest thing we have for what you're asking for is the 'Emblem Map' mod which replaces countries' names on the map with their country's emblem, and it does update when you take territory.

Also you get your designers via focuses. You have to be at war to train chitets iirc, to take Djibouti France just needs to get split in two normally by Germany, thats how its worked for me, granted I've never done it as independent Ethiopia.

I caused several rebellions in Africa going for the faction achievement and I demanded the British go to peace with Somaliland, they did not go to peace, and I couldn’t demand peace from any other nation anymore.
forming a nation should give you prospect for resources decisions especially in Africa and Southwest Asia as those two regions got the shaft resource-wise.
If you really want to see more bugs try out working with Italy - in theory you should get italian advisers and generals but national focuses add nothing...

Do wish the Greater Ethiopia decision gave you some buffs, even if it's just stability though.
