  • Troubleshooting a computer can be frustrating, especially when the solution doesn't even appear to be related to the symptom. Today I show you how I solved a very weird problem with my test bench.

    This reminds me of that feeling you get when you know a mechanical hard drive is failing and the whole system just doesn't respond right, even if you have done a drive check and not found any errors. You just know it's not right.

      I had a segate barracuda I used for 7 years with no errors, then one day it acted funny, and one day it was fine, the next it had a whole page of S.M.A.R.T Errors, and the next day it was totally dead. RIP.

      @Stephen Thompson Sorry about that :-) I don't know about SSD's as I've never tried it, but running a speed test that plots a graph was a trick I always used to use, if you get consistent large transfer rate drops in the same place it can indicate a potential problem in that area of a mechainical drive. Usually SMART picks this stuff up now though.

      Not such a bad idea if you figure out it's the mobo that's causing the issue. However, if it's the GPU then... oooh. that's gonna cost big. £600 for a 1080Ti and the AMD equivalent is not much cheaper.
      Oh wait... the OP was talking about throwing out the WHOLE PC? No no no no. The case alone cost well over £120. I thought he meant throwing out the diagnosed 'bad' parts!

I would say it’s the best without a doubt if it weren’t for all the issues. For me, it’s games randomly deciding not to boot up, games appearing in half the screen size, etc random stuff like that which is what occurs but when it works pc gaming is great

      I have UPS on all of my systems, even my main node for my network has it's own UPS.
      Keep an eye on buy and sell sites, pages, etc. Some people sell off used ones cheap. Some might need new batteries but they can be had for decent prices too. I've only bought one that needed new batteries right away, because they were simply not there. The rest I've bought used or bought as new, never used have served me well.
      To me every system should have a UPS, if not for the power back up, then for the power filtering at least.

    • @Chebornek
      @Chebornek 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you can afford a $1200 to $2400 build, you should afford a $130 ups.

    • @reddragon27284
      @reddragon27284 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheb Ornek to be honest you can often pick up a half decent UPS for free and just feed some batteries into it. I work in an IT department for a large organisation where we have equipment rotation and replacement policies where old kit is replaced even if it is fully functional. Some of it goes on eBay but a lot of it is either given away or recycled. The UPS I use on my home bench is an APC SmartUPS 1500 that is better than any £100 UPS and only cost me £50 for the batteries.
      Have a chat with local companies and see if they have anything going. I’m sure most people would rather see the old kit go to someone who can use it rather than get wasted.

      Try updating your soundcard drivers, if that does not work go on eBay, and pick up a cheap USB soundcard. I was having popping issues with my onboard sound with a computer I built for work not to long back salvaging an old but good MSI AMD AM2+ board running Cloudready OS(open source chrome OS), and the $2.99 USB sound card did the trick no problem when plugged directly into the motherboard. Just get one that's HD Audio compliant so it will work out of the box on just about any OS XP, or newer.

    I know how you feel Jay, yesterday I set my procODT to 60ohms and it was so unstable I had to reset the CMOS. Since then my motherboard wouldn't accept the correct voltage I'd input e.g. I'd set 1.2v SOC and it would be at 0.925v. The CPU voltage was at 1.437v because of precision boost, as soon as I disabled that it went to 1.097v and my RAM speed wasn't set how I set in BIOS (I set 2933MHz and it was at 3066 when I booted)... This problem still persisted when I reflashed the bios too. To fix this I had to remove a stick of RAM and then reset the CMOS and boom everything back to normal... Crazy!

    • @MrSleepless87

    • @C0manso
      @C0manso 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      My point exactly, I have no idea how it worked either! It's an Asus X370 Prime so one of the cheaper X370 boards, so chances it's just a BIOS bug. It was so crazy to see that fix it out of all things, and to think procODT would screw it that much too.

    • @C0manso
      @C0manso 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think those voltages are also like safe boot or stock values too, they just wouldn't move no matter what I did (until the solution above) since my DRAM was also stuck at 1.2v.

    Good ol' Windows Updates that change random settings are always fun to troubleshoot. I remember like 2 weeks ago there was an update that changed Privacy features for Microphone access. Didn't even know that option existed, and of course it was nested like 5 menus deep. Spent like an hour trying to get my microphone working, and all because Windows decided to "block" it.

    1. Swapped SATA cable,

      I disagree.
      If you don't have any issues, don't upgrade your BIOS.

    • @jdchen003
      @jdchen003 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thing is, if you get a Spectre/Meltdown attack, you might not notice an issue. If you have no security concerns, then that's ok.

    • @photonboy999
      @photonboy999 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would hope that the BIOS update section would specify Spectre and/or Meltdown updates or at the very least say "security updates" which I would apply... but if you see something like just "memory compatibility updates" (new DDR4 profiles) or other things which likely don't affect you, AND you have no obvious issues I'd stay away from BIOS updates.
      I used to recommend them, but I've since learned to follow the Don't Fix It If It Ain't Broken mantra.

    • @vonkruel
      @vonkruel 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you're having no issue it's best to look at what issues the newer firmware is supposed to resolve, and don't risk flashing it unless those fixes would actually help you. The only exception I make to that is old mainboards that probably aren't receiving any more firmware updates. I tend to roll the dice & do the update, because then the board will (probably) have the newest firmware for the rest of its life.

    I'm at this point currently... lol
    Built a PC for my brother for Christmas last year. Got it running, everything was going great, but one of the USB 3.0 headers wasn't working. Ok, RMA'd the board, they shipped it back, installed it and did updates and played a couple games to make sure it was working.
    I restarted the system for a Windows update, and either during shutdown or start up the system froze. Not Windows, to my knowledge, but the PC itself somehow. All the fans were on, but nothing on the monitor. I held the power down and the system wouldn't power down... So I turned the PSU off manually. The system would never start again.
    I RMA'd the board again, got it back this week, and did a box-top build. Same symptoms when I jump it, the lights flash and it doesn't turn on. I have to power-cycle the PSU.
    I hooked only fans to the PSU and then jumped it, and it ran the fans just fine... So now I'm not really sure where to go. It might be a PSU issue, or potentially the CPU... Kinda stuck, but looking forward to troubleshooting the issue. I just wish I had more hardware I could try out to eliminate stuff.

    • @grindle2000
      @grindle2000 6 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      i would try replacing the PSU (even if you have to borrow one ) I would bet that the PSU is bad ...it doesnt take much to run some fans ...just to check unplug everything (HD, fans (not cpu fan) and see if it will start then , if it does I would say the PSU is not sending enough power to run everything

    With a stopping drive it is also worth trying out a different plug. It might just be manufacturing tolerances at their best.
    Or the port on the board could have issue. Had that years ago with a board where the secondary IDE channel had issues.
    And I had to update the firmware of my SSD to fix it from stopping after some days of work.
    another drive where I had to keep the plug under pressure because the port on the drive itself got lose.

    If you have a failing secondary or external drive, even if it's not the boot drive it can cause hang ups, blue screens, or crashes. That's where I thought this one may be going. Might even be an external component connected to USB that's causing issues. When I get computers in my shop that say they are doing something but I can never reproduce it I usually ask if they have any devices connected to it. Then I'll usually have them test it out without any essentials connected and see if the issue persists.

    Potentially dumb question alert: It sounds like almost right out of the gate you had traced the problem to a bad Windows update that created a conflict with the older Bios in your motherboard. So my question is, since you already had that as a working theory, why didn't you try to roll back your Windows updates using a restore point from before you downloaded the update you were already suspicious of, in order to see if that solved the problem rather than jumping through all of those hoops?

      Windows has a nasty habit of reinstalling updates after rolling back, and in some cases wont even let you uninstall updates. Plus he had to clear his cmos just to have the ssd recognized and chances are the uninstall would fail anyway. This exact issue hit me last week as well. It's a real pain considering I have so many blockades to delay win updates until after the bugs are recorded.

    • @dsjamesk
      @dsjamesk 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your thoughts on rolling back to a previous version of Windows is a good one, I suspect that it never would've worked though because it doesn't look like it took much time at all to completely lock up the system. It probably never would have been able to complete the restore process.

    This is what happens when people do not read instruction manuals. Motherboard manufacturers always and i mean ALWAYS recommend that the owner of the board updates to the latest BIOS (boards are not always shipped with the latest BIOS) and to always periodically check the motherboard board manufacturers website for any BIOS updates for your board because doing so prevents problems like you witnessed in the video.

      I think this type of error had to do something with security patches (spectre bug), thus they had to change a lot architecturally that needed a BIOS update too. Very specific.
      In most cases, if you have a 3-5 month older bios than the launch (version 1) bios, you might be pretty much fine for the rest of lifetime.

    • @MikeHanson
      @MikeHanson 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Every motherboard I've owned, an MSI and two ASUS stated in the manuals that they don't recommend updating the BIOS unless you are having issues. Page 3-25 of the user manual for the CH7 if you were wondering.

    • @laptech8272
      @laptech8272 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @Brandon, no, that is and has always been the wrong advice. Anyone who believes what you wrote is faking being big into computers. Technology moves fast and you have to move fast with it.
      A motherboard can take a multitude of different parts all of differing specifications. As the individual parts keep improving, so does the operating system (OS) because the OS has to be updated to work with these ever changing parts. It will then get to the point where everything has been updated BUT the board BIOS, it is still creaking along on V1.0 while everything else has surpassed it till eventually it gives out.
      People who are 'Big' into computers are very pro-active. They make sure everything in their system is constantly updated to prevent any issues occurring. Those who are re-active, (wait for an issue to occur) they are the lazy computer enthusiasts. They wait for a fault/issue to occur then spend hours/days fault finding the problem, only to find it to be something they should have done weeks/months ago.

    I had an issue with the Ryzen 1800X + MSI X370 motherboard last year. It basically couldn't detect the CPU at all, I tried RMA'ing both the CPU and motherboard and the issue still persisted regardless of getting a different motherboard and even BIOS updating it. I ended up getting a 8700K + Z370 swap without any additional payments as the Intel setup was more expensive. And this Intel setup worked out of the box. What a 4 day headache of troubleshooting that was.

    ok, I'll bite, lol. I've had a chronic GPU driver crash ever since MS insisted on installing a newer driver than the one that had worked fine before, and an update will NOT let me roll back the driver without putting the new one back in on the next boot up, grr. I've tried ALL the drivers after the problematic win update enforced driver, all with the same Driver crash prob. The last Bios Update, however, was in October 2012 (ASUS M5A97 Rev 1.0) only 5 months newer than the BIOS on this board, this is not encouraging, lol. It's worth a try tho.

    Good luck updating your bios is the MB is more than a year old. Mine is three years. My computer keep going into a reboot loop. Cleared the CMOS a bunch of times and would end up doing the same thing. Checked the SSD, was fine. Thought it might be a power supply (cheap ass Antec 400 watt), but then started pulling ram modules. Found the problem would go away when I removed one particular stick. Was the ram. Returning ram is costly and slow as I'm in Canada (shipping cost and they ship back on horseback, it's been month). Didn't think it would be the ram because I've been using it for three years but it was. Or maybe the most recent Windows updates brought out the problem like with yours. The recent Windows supplied Spectre update hasn't helped either. Been doing this for thirty years (building and fixing my own computers)...there's always something going wrong.

    My PC is at least 8 years old. Do you know what helped me fix many of the problems I had with it? I just decided I wasn't going to install *anymore Windows 7 updates* , not even 'critical' updates. In fact right now I'm not even running SP1 for Windows 7 Home Edition. Crazy I know, but it's true. BSODs, gone. Lockups, gone. Driver conflicts , gone. I've since had years of problem-free computing, it still runs pretty good. I dont even rememeber the last time I had a serious virus. And the only occasional BSODs I get are TDRs from my old graphics card. The moral of the story is take a chance and don't believe the scare stories. Sometimes computing is simpler than we make it out to be.

    Not long ago, a pc of a friend started to activate the cutouts of his house, we figured it must be the psu because even with everything out of the case except of the psu, it still caused it to activate. So what we did was to switch out the psu for my old one I had lying around and all was good for about one week. After that it was fried and didn't work anymore. In the meantime the replacement psu arrived and we inserted it into the case. Boom, new psu and still the same problem. Since we tested his computer in his house and mine and it worked fine at my house, we concluded that it must be something at his house which caused the psu's to not work correctly. We called an electrician who told us that everything was fine..... Now the end of the story(hopefully) is, the psu made somehow contact with the case, we removed all screws but one that connects the psu with the case and this seemed to be the culprit. How is this possibe? By leaving the screw and only using three of the four, it works up until now, fingers crossed. It worked at my place only because in the cellar we tested it, we didn't have a GFCI.

    I got Windows 7 and hated it because my computer would hard lock. Sometimes it would be hella slow, sometimes I'd habe hours of glorious speedy playing and browsing...and then the next day I'd spend an hour trying to make it run for more than 30 seconds before locking.
    So I gave up and went back to Windows XP and it worked absolutely fine. I stuck with XP for a year and didn't have a single issue. So I tried W7 again assuming it would have been patched and all that good stuff. The problem came back. Downloaded W7 in case my CD version was borked somehow. I'd started running hardware tests in XP since W7 wouldn't run long enough to do any. Everything was fine. Eventually I played some Starcraft 2 in W7 and got a blue screen with a stop code.
    I had previously run Memtest with all three sticks, so I tried running them one stick at a time over night on a continuous test. The third night, the third stick started throwing up errors within a minutes and I'd found my problem. XP had been fine because it never used the third stick because it is maxed out at 4GB when I had three 2GB sticks. It only ever used the two good ones.
    Once I got the RAM replaced (twice, because the replacement Corsair sent me had a dodgy third stick again) the system was smooth as butter and never had a problem since.
