I give you A+ for persistence as you continue to review Gerber products!! I just wouldn't bother. As for this particular tool - your father's response is the same as mine. I always recommend Victorinox for non-plier multi-tools and Leatherman for plier multi-tools. Find the version that meets your needs and go. I've used both for 25+ years and never let me down. Cost a bit more but 1) work & 2) keep working. Shape blades all.
I just watched a video where a guy showed how to pop out a stake using cordage made from a root tied around the stake which he looped over his ax handle and pulled up on the handle with the ax head braced against his foot for leverage. Can’t remember who it was.
Gerber product meeting: "Hey guys lets build a competitor to the Skeletool, but include tweezers and scissors!" "That's great! How about an awl and maybe a saw, and file, too!" "YES! That would be such a great tool set!" " Oh, guys, you know what we gotta ad? That hook on the back of alot of swiss army knives that everyone hates!" "Yes! Ok, all that is great, we just need to completely botch the execution!"
Well I think the J hook would be handy for someone who might struggle pulling it out plus it will also be good getting very hot handles that are on pots in the fire😊 as well as anything else that need to hook😊
Thinking outside the box.... stake puller could come in handy lifting HOT lids from my cook pots, eh? Or maybe lifting a hot pot, with a handle, from point A to point B.
As funny as the stake puller seems, I gotta say I get some good use out of the parcel hook on my SAK. Tie a rope around some wood and you've got a way to haul firewood, use it to pull knots in small cordage super tight, and pull out tent stakes. Heck I use it to carry grocery bags from time to time
Yes i think it is an undervalued tool, but considering an SAK is cheaper, easier to carry and higher quality that still makes this iteration redundant.
More DAD! Why the back of the saw for striking when you have the back of a locking blade? Stuck stakes do exist because sometimes I have to use stakes that don't have a string
@@thomasmaloney843 I've got two "Principles", their scandi grind fixed blade. US made 420hc blade. I'm glad I gave it a chance. My Garberg is collecting dust.
I honestly have had problems with tent stakes. Where I camp is so rocky or loose I either get the stakes stuck or can’t go in but you can always just pull on the rope or tent loop lol
I carry a Victorinox trekker with me everywhere and I only paid $20 for it...better tool than the Gerber...that yellow eviction looks like a winner too... Gerber has been suspicious to me lately 🤔🤔🤔
Perhaps some folks with disabilities would find it useful... but perhaps for those us who are fortunate enough to have 10 fingers/ both arms, etc. the Stakeout is a novelty. Then again, I thought I saw Victorinox using something similar in one of their pocket knives...
I kept looking at the Leatherman perched on the Wall of Fame shelf behind your shoulder during this review and thinking - it's hard to replace a tool that already works. Good review as always, and loved seeing your dad!
I own this tool and have used the hook to lift Dutch oven off a fire, and to take a bass out of the water from a kayak clip works well on pfd.file will sharpen my Gerber bushcraft axe in a emergency.
I've definitely ran into some situations where a hook was nice to have. Mostly after stomping pegs into some rather tough soil. Yeah they all had cords on em, but it really hurt to pull on these. So I used the hook on my Victorinox to effortlessly pull these out. Of course this is very unusual, but a hook is good for many things. I also use it to pick up hot lids on my stoves and such. This tool has the right idea, just not the right execution.
If a tent peg was really stuck, I would think the carabiner would give a better pull and I could get a better grip on the tool. I bought it like a lot of gimmicky tools but I can't see me ever using it.
Interesting concept, but I totally agree with going with victorinox. for the price their overall quality is much better. If you really need some sort of tent stake puller, I would probably just bring a plier based tool that could do the same thing, plus a lot more
that "j-hook" is just a bigger parcel hook from a SAK, can probably do the same thing if you need to with the parcel hook, but i've never had a problem getting a tent stake out... even in rockier dirt; also you can use the carabiner for the same thing, or a leatherman signal carabiner cause thats actually a useful outdoor multitool.
2:06 welp.. that sux I think the industry is overdue for a truly high quality outdoor-specific multitool.. think Leatherman Signal but with a thick(er) scandi blade in elmax/3v/35vn, more emphasis on blade and lock, less on pliers and gimmicks. A Rangergrip 78 with better blade steel and small pliers for hot stuff would be awesome.
Really like the looks and function other than the blade steel. If Gerber a put decent blade steel on it might be interested. Thanks for the review Aaron!
It's an odd duck in the pond. I think your right a swiss army knife would be a better non pliers equipped option. But I always prefer a multi tool with pliers...Gerber or Leatherman...and include a smaller swiss army knife as needed to fill other tool gaps
The Victorinox Fieldmaster will do everything this tool will and much more for less money and smaller overall package. The quality of the Victorinox scissors reigns supreme. Few, if any scissors on multitools even come close to the Victorinox. The Fieldmaster, along with other Vic models come with what they call a package hook. This hook is decidedly smaller but will readily pull tent stakes if need be. Thanks for sharing.
I'll stick with my Signal by Leatherman. Everyone, especially Gerber copies their products and you do seem to be Gerber biased. That is ok, not knocking that, I own a Gerber or two, and have owned a multi-tool of theirs which failed me continuously. Thanks for the video, always enjoy your gear reveiws.
I have this and it's good. I'm a lightweight packer, I don't need to carve out a spoon or need to build a shelter. It's doesn't take up room or weigh much. I don't use this all the time but useful when I do need it. It's good for its price. obviously if I found myself needing a specific tool more often, then i would get something else. In regards to that hook. Yes it's also useful. Not all tent pegs have pull cords. Hook is useful if your hands are brittle cold and the ground is damp and compact. Using the carabiner is not the same is the hook. With the hook the whole tool acts as a handle. Also China makes everything. From cheap and nasty to Luxury items like that fancy phone you are watching this video on or the camera this video was filmed. If quality isn't good, blame yourself or that brand you bought from. Cheap items exist because there is a market for it. Usually you get what you pay for.
I have come across tent stakes that wouldn't budge, but I've never had a problem using something else in my kit or quickly engineering something to aid in pulling a peg. Apart from that, this tool seems fairly useless and of poor quality and I'd certainly look at any number of other multi-tools before this one. Thanks for the review, keep on doing that thing you do!

I have never been unhappy with a Victorinox product. Amazingly sharp and holds an edge forever.
Victorinox has a nice little hook on many of their SAKs. lol
I'll play devil's advocate here with the J hook... I think it's designed for people who use classic steel/aluminiun wire tent pegs. Not people who use pegs with the string loop like MSR pegs etc...
With wire pegs, when they are buried in the ground sometimes it's tricky to get them out as the hooky part is flush on the ground or even in the ground sometimes .
I carry a rubber mallet that has a hook at the bottom of the handle specifically for that purpose. I know there are a few brands which make aluminium hammers/mallets for tent with a hammer end and a hook as well. Personally I prefer the rubber one as - in addition of putting tent pegs of course - I can also baton on my knife with it, without damaging the spine of the blade and without making too much noise.
That being said arguably when using wire pegs, you could use a spare peg to take out the ones you've buried if you had no need of a hammer to put your pegs on. Or you could just use regular pliers to take the pegs out, like a Leatherman for example.
Anyway... I think that's what the J hook on the Gerber was designed for. It's a gimmick to me. I would not buy a tool just for that.
Based on that review (and a few others I've seen on YT) that Gerber multitool has good blade geometry but poor steel. It doesn't have any feature I'd actually need that I would not have on my other multitools (Leatherman etc...) and hence I have no interest in it. That's a useless gadget !
