Michael Stipe cringes at his solo, raw vocals of the song Losing My Religion. Peter Buck explains how he likes fans to hear demo cuts to document the history of the band. Michael still struggles hearing demo cuts.
REM
Everybody hates hearing their own voice, but Michael's performance here is classic and iconic.
Mick and Elton love theirs. They won’t shut up.
It's interesting to see such an accomplished artist still have that cringe at their own voice.
Dude is so humble which makes him even more of a legend. He laid down an iconic vocal performance there, one of many
I really hate my voice but if millions loved it then i would feel better about it
John Lennon never liked his. Seems quite mad
How can he ever have hated his voice? The pitch and clarity of it is amazing when in full performance.
Most people hate their own voice when listening to it on a recording. It's just cringe naturel xD
@@deathkampdrone Yes, I've heard the same thing. Hearing your own voice isolated is brutal, no matter how good it is.
This is something that people who do not sing can not comprehend. It has nothing to do self-confidence, but rather, standards. Most really good singers are so hypercritical of their own voices that sometimes they can't stand to hear it unaccompanied. I totally understand where Mr. Stipe is coming from.
@@Azabaxe80 Well, also your voice sounds different when its recorded. Your voice rattles around in your skull, what you hear yourself is different from the recorded voice. It just is, it's undeniable.
Lennon hate his voice too
His speaking voice and his singing voice are both gorgeous in different ways.
Michael's voice is iconic. Awesome, just pure talent!! When you hear him sing you immediately think REM.
One of the greatest voices ever.
I love that he wants it out there for the people who are interested. ❤
One of the most iconic voices in music history, instantly recognisable and capable of passing thru so much emotion even if you found the lyrics impenetrable. Oh and in my humble opinion, the greatest rock band ever, behind him too. Still miss these guys.
It sounded beautiful. I agree with Peter, I am interested let them out. We appreciate the outtakes and the rough drafts, it's all a part of the journey to the published piece and worth the review. Golly I miss seeing y'all live!
Most innovative world changing products have rough unpolished prototypes that precede them. It’s just a natural part of the process.
I do think it's good for young people who want to make music to see their idols had to strive and make mistakes too
I like to hear demos and outtakes especially of my favourite bands or songs it's good to hear how the song started and hear the
musical differences lyrical difference tempos, arrangements and how songs grow into the final version,
I like hearing or seeing rough cuts by artists and the insecurities they have; it proves that they're only human! Finished versions full of confidence and commitment seems so beyond what normal humans can do... but there was a path before they arrived at that.
It's so worthwhile watching this whole episode on Netflix. Even in separate interviews the chemistry of the four band members is palpable. You can easily see how they made one another better. And they all offer great reflections on this classic recording.
what show is it?
0:38 little detail that i love is that he opened his eyes right when he sang the word “eyes”. pretty neat!
The raw version is beautiful ❤
EXTREMELY!
Michael cuts a rough demo vocal better than 95%+ of every person on earth could ever do with the best studio equipment imaginable and doesn't like it LOL. Such a talent and perfectionist.
beautiful human, beautiful gift to all including him.R.E.M will be played forever.
I love hearing Peter Buck's perspective in this clip. His interviews are always 👨🍳💋
I feel like it’d be fun to get shitfaced with Peter and just talk about whatever
As if that man's voice could be anything but incredible and more so raw!❣️
It feels genuine and from the soul and that is what made the song really soar above the landscape. Cool video.
Brilliant voice. Iconic band. Hearing just Michael’s vocals gave me goosebumps
Out of time and Automatic for the people are probably my two favourite albums, brings back such mixed feelings of happiness after spending a year in Australia and sadly a few months after I returned home l lost my beautiful mum . Beautiful songs !
Check out "Automatic For the Penis" by Penis Your Majesty.
Automatic is my favorite album of theirs, and I have all the early ones that I love. Document is a very, very close second. Green holds a special place in my heart.
Like any artist - a painter, a sculptor, a toy maker, a blue printer, or a musician - Michael is hyper-critical of his own talent, seeing and hearing "flaws" that are perfection to his audience.
He sings his heart out to us
Listening to demos is like reading a rough draft of a great novel. They didn't release the demo for a reason...but once the great work is released and accepted, its nice to go back and hear or see or read how that thing got made and the revisions it went through to become what it became.
Its so awesome to see/hear the roots of your favorite songs and how that song came to be and what it became. Love it.
The beauty of this song is unsurpassed, and hasn’t diminished over the passing of time.
It was the right song at the right time, and is now a permanent marker in history.
I never liked it but heard an analysis of the musical merits on youtube and begrudgingly thought maybe I had misjudged. Still for as big as that song was I cannot help but prefer any of about 75% of their songs other than that, at least of their output to that point.
@@etamommy I think it’s a combination of songwriting skill, musicianship, timing and luck as to how any song is received. A whole lot of stars need to align for a hit.
You make a good point in that some artists have better songs, which weren’t liked as much as others or which weren’t released. There are many album tracks or b-sides from many artists, which were superior to single releases.
I love Michael s personality. I love his chilling voice. Thank you MS❤
Favourite song of my childhood and now it hasn't changed
Fantastic voice! Mesmeric performer!
Peter Buck is the coolest dude
Wow! I absolutely love it ❤
Beautiful
Man this brings me back to 1991, freshman year in high school and this thing was all over MTV in constant rotation. Great times
LOVE this band. They struck me as such artists and yet became a pop band that changed their sound a dozen times and yet it was still always REM
That short Video of him , made me miss him. Miss R.E.M. and my own twenties when I was enjoying them. I feel, that I still do.
This tiny Video really touches me.
Stipe is such a great man and artist. I love his humbleness.
I have loved REM for so long!
My favorite singers have always been those that would never win, the Voice, I don’t want polished perfection, I want raw emotion, personality and honesty, and Michael’s voice is all of that. But we are all our own worst critics and I can definitely understand not liking your own voice or performance; it’s normal
Great song. Great performance. Thanks for being “there.”
Michel's is the one voice that can, and that does, reduce me into tears at any given moment. Just like that. No other reason needed - just his voice. Just hits me somewhere in my soul. Such beauty that i feel it as pain...
Si commuove ascoltando la sua stessa grandezza...voce epica immortale..grande Michael immensi REM❤🎸
I admire this man so much.
My all time favourite song
beautiful
I love the demos, the rawness and the beginnings of a journey.
I LOVE YOU MICHAEL 😘
I don't know why this brings tears to my eyes every time...
Love him!!!! I wish they were still touring......
One of the first songs I listened to over and over
❤ his voice.
One of the mist underrated voices of all time
Mist Difinitely
Truly!
@@futureskeletons66669 Only his friends call him ‘Mist Difinitely’.
You’ll address him as *Mister* _Difinitely._
one of the most overrated type of comments of all time
Underrated by no one.
Absolute perfection ❤
I love it honestly!
The emotion in that cuts soooo deep............. Glad I witnessed it live, 3 times in Ireland.
the philosophy of Pete at the end is wonderful. always enjoyed seeing him, afternoons at The Roadhouse...ahhh Athens...
Incredible voice. He's crazy talented and humble with it.
Loved this song still do
This is such a beautiful clip. Many people hate hearing the sound of their own voice, but Michael Stipe's voice has always struck me (and obviously many others) as sincere and beautiful. This cut is hearing a great song in progress. :)
You gotta love the out takes. It highlights the process and hard work it takes to turn a rock into a diamond
I love Micheal Stipe and REM
This teared me up...
Amazing voice
Stunning vocal when you hear it isolated. Love listening to demos, the embryonic stage.
Amazing
His voices is incredible has a quality to identify his intelligence is the way u learned a lot from his humility as a person
Incredible song
I knew that song was a masterpiece when I first heard it! A song about unrequited love. Most of my life, I have been too shy to tell anyone that I loved them. It could have been my anthem!
♥
Amazing voice.
We need you Sir .
Michael has a great and totally unique voice, but when you hear it isolated you clearly see that REM is soooo much more than just "Michael's voice being supported by a band".
Few bands sound like the eighties like this band does. I was there. I lived it while it was happening. And a lot of REM songs were on that soundtrack.
Stunning
I love Michael stipe
I ❤ R.E.M😢❤❤
It’s magnificent
Michael 💜
The demo tracks from Fables and Life's Rich Pageant are FANTASTIC. I made playlists from both ordered them according to the album release and they get played more than the final tracks. Just listen to how cool the guitar sounds in the Begin the Begin demo, SO COOL. The Demo's are fully formed musically it's amazing that aside from Stipe's unfinished vocals the songs are whole and complete on the demos from being played live already. They are like a little live performance of the songs but with the advantage of studio recording.
The thing michael needs to realise about thise songs is its not JUST his voice. Its how someone couod be so sweet kind sensitive and empathetic enough in this world to write a song this beautiful.
His voice is great. Still to this day. But things like his Colbert version of No Time For Love Like Now belong in the world.
There will never be a more raw and complete version recorded than the first time he performed it on tv at the start of the pandemic.
But for some reason i have to watch a derez version some dude uploaded when it was removed off The Late Shows video lineup
Dude, what do you mean?? I've got chills running down my spine, my mouth was open hearing that...
That voice was breathtaking
I think it sounds awesome!!
I really wish someone would make a definitive documentary about R.E.M.
Wow that voice 😍
I love the demos. It shows the process that they took to get to the final version.
As a fan I find the demos to be like live performances… slight variations of the original that make the song even better with each version you hear.
Made my 90’s . I grew up to this and everything else. Best decade of music ever. REM was part of the best music ever. 1990’s rules.
That’s guy is a creative genius
Such a distinct voice.
This song was so compelling the moment I first heard it.
It was on mtv and vh1 at the same time. I witnessed it more than once. Its a good song. At 10 yrs old i knew it was a good song
Same, i was 6. Great music is usually undeniable.
The "few people" that are interested? How about the MILLIONS of us that are interested & miss you all terribly?!
Great great vocal! ✌🏻
Stipe is still recognizable as REM from 35 years ago
Bill, Peter, Mike and Michael have left the world a much better place than they found it. We should all be so lucky!
I love the end to this video, good words
People are strange, when you're a stranger, [voices look ugly] when you're alone." Love REM. Love singing covers.
Waiting for REM comeback!
Legends
I listened to Green the other day for the first time in years. That's such an accomplished album. These guys were sorted from day-one.
Perfect. Stipe’s humility is refreshing.
wow.awesome.
I saw Peter Buck solo on stage with just an acoustic guitar at the 9.30 club. Mesmerizing.
Yeah just like all the nirvana stuff that was put out, rem probly has way more and I'd love to hear all of it!
It’s comforting to know that even some of the all time greats cants stand the sound of their own voice. I think it maybe gives me more confidence?? 😊
REM reminds me of my college days. Carefree and fun
