You miss music too eh? Yeah we had a good thing going, from tribal drums, to mozart, everything since mozart and up til about 1996, was music, and then something terrible happened, some sort of glitch in the simulation of life, or perhaps a wicked spell cast by some particle collider or whatever, that permanently ruined all of humanities ability to create music ever again. which explains stuff like, yknow, every ear torturing yet boring monstrosities like "Wet Ass Pussy" or "stupid hoe". yknow im just gonna say it, we had music until our countries were ruined, invaded and perverted by money worshiping misers and their disgusting vision of society.

Half of the success of this music is due to its videoclip. I'm heavy metal guy, but the references with classic Reinassance, old classic literature makes you try to decipher the lyrics in a way it makes sense to you in a completely different way than another person. It touches you in you own way, in your own vibe...

The phrase, "lost my religion!" in Southern terms, means you got so fed up, angry, upset, or whatever else, and probably cussing, which is why the phrase describes it. You lost your cool, you lost your religion or control and started cussing too much, gave in to anger, and so on. --
I hadn't know Michael and the band viewed the song as about unrequited love, or that the singer/narrator isn't even sure if the beloved is aware of his love for the beloved. If you then put that back to religion, then...the struggling human is so distraught that he wonders if God is even aware of him or his love. Hmm, really interesting, there. -- And if you view it as losing your religion over unrequited love for someone human, a struggle over this, coupled with, it could be same-sex love or bi, then, wow, also an interesting perspective on it. (And fair, given that Michael Stipe may not be straight.) At the time, the video and song were really groundbreaking. Now, knowing more about the band's views on the song, wow, more meaningful. Thank you. I love getting insights like this into songs.

My understanding of "lost my religion" is the same as yours. With a Louisiana rooted mother and Alabama rooted father, I think the understanding given to me by them is correct.
I remember people saying that the song was about domestic abuse precisely for that reason.

You’re connecting the name of the song with the meaning and he even says its not in the beginning. The song is about unrequited love and being frustrated hence why the speaker says the term. The narrator is saying hes at his wits end as you described. Thats all

Breakup songs were always successful because they provide very strong emotions everyone experienced. this one goes even farther, the guy is obsessed with a girl he can't have and can't stop it and is sad. oh life its bigger than you.

For him it is about unrequited love. For me it will always be about literally losing my religion and wondering if it would cost me my relationship with my family.
"Life is bigger than you."--bigger than the religious views I grew up with.
"You are not me."--You don't understand why I doubt those teachings.
All the way to "choosing my confessions." How much should I tell them? I worried about "saying too much" and then "not enough."
It all worked out. They still love me! A couple have even confessed moments of doubt, but they are still quite religious.

I doesn’t talk about religion, it’s about the individual and untold religion each of us has deep in his soul, that blows up once the passion comes to shake shake all your world

Their intelligence, musicianship, melancholy and melodic beauty still shines through. Age is just a number. I'd give good bucks to see them as they are today over any of the "youthful" , fabricated , uninspiring rubbish that currently exists...... consider this.

sigh Music has always been full of fabricated and uninspiring rubbish ever since postwar economic growth. People are always on ''oh them usiciand then were way better'' what talent they had came from effort and not bashing on other musicians. sigh Can peopel ever just like odl music without saying today's is bad?

I always thought it was odd that the only vibrato in their music was from his voice. Well anyways, I met Michael once in Seattle, back in '96. He seemed like a nice enough fellow. And now I live in Georgia, where he's originally from.
